    Good and easy recipe. I think I will modify it a bit and add some semi-cooked liver or hearts for taurine. Also, maybe add some squash instead of vegetables. Thank you for the great idea. It's probably still better than overpriced canned food in the pet stores.

    Chris you are to be commended for trying to help keep your cats healthy.
    But first off, this diet is not balanced, and it's NOT biologically appropriate for cats; cats do NOT need vegetables. They are obligate carnivores which means they must eat what would be considered high protein for humans. The only veggies they eat are what has been consumed in the stomachs of the prey they eat, which is a very small amount. The veggies you put in their food are not fermented, as it would be in the stomachs of their prey, plus there is way too much of it. (Please don't go and add fermentation to the veggies!) The vegetable broth is potentially harmful to them. Broths usually have onion and garlic which is harmful to cats. If eaten enough, can cause splitting of red blood cells and anemia. You can make your own broth by cooking chicken or meat in water only. Cats love it.
    I'm sure your kitty is hungry and does eat the food you make for him. But that doesn't mean that the food is actually good for him. It isn't! Please consult a nutritionist, or better yet a raw food specialist, which is also easy to make and very affordable also. Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/EyYQZ-9HvEQ/w-d-xo.html It's by Cat Lady Fitness. Her recipe costs only 53 cents per serving (3 to 4 ounces). You can also get a recipe (as well as a huge cat resource site by a well-respected veterinarian) at: catinfo.org.
    Good luck!

    • @sunshinegirl1967
      @sunshinegirl1967 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not much better. It's a myth that homemade food is too expensive. Here's a youtuber who has figured out that her biologically appropriate homemade food costs 53 cents per serving. Right now, Fancy Feast in the store costs 60 cents a can. th-cam.com/video/EyYQZ-9HvEQ/w-d-xo.htmlSo it is AFFORDABLE! I put this link in my first post above. Maybe you didn't read that far.

    My vet said to get some taurine to add, you can look up online how much. She also said not to use raw veggies for cats, because, the cat's digestive system doesn't have the right enzymes or something so the veggies don't break down right unless they're cooked... the cooked veggies are partly broken down by the process. You could use cooked white or sweet potato instead of the oats. And too much fish over time depletes a cat's vitamin E level. I like that you switch out with chicken. I've seen canned turkey and beef too, which would give you more animal proteins to choose from... and you could even make a nice pot roast for yourself and set a chunk aside for kitty :-) A friend of mine makes food for her dog like this. He's a toy pom, and she freezes the food in ice trays so she just thaws what she needs.

    You can go to your local butcher and ask for their end of day bone meal. ..it's what they scrap off the saws throughout the day. It has bone, meat, fat..from pork or beef..it looks like a pale hamburger. Cats love it!! Add you veggies if you want..but seriously I'd just add some organ meat, maybe some minnows from the pet store ( only if you think they gotta have it) ...some broth..or make your own by boiling bones. This is sooooooo cheap it's rediculous. Even cheaper than what your making. Their coats are amazing and you'll love that the litter box has waaaaaay less in it.
    The butchers are happy to give it to you for about 30 cents a pound...they just throw it away...it's not packed pretty..just put in a box...but you can freeze it. They will have alot..more than you can use. Alot of Kennels will get it for the dogs. First come first serve!!

    • @gailjarvis2592
      @gailjarvis2592 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOCAL BUTCHER? We only have "meat cutters" and they're in the hinterlands of the store chasing rats with "meat cutter" cleavers. No such thing as professional butchers anymore - unless you're a member of the "uppercut" (lol) class.

    • @veaperl8795
      @veaperl8795 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gailjarvis2592 nothing upper cut here....all our grocery stores have butchers in the meat department. The saws have to be cleaned. Its whats on the saws that they scrap off and people buy for animals. We do have smaller places that mainly butcher, I worked summers at my Uncles....their is usually at least one on every city and town....even smaller communities. Where ever they cut up meat you can guarantee they use a saw and have to scrap it off to keep it clean.

      Thanks for your comment. While this may not be a perfectly healthy recipe I.can ensure you it is much healthier than store bought cat food! With the exception of the high end raw cat food that Nobody can afford! My cat has been eating this for around a year now and the results have been life changing for him. I ran out of this homemade cat food last week and had to feed him some store bought cat food and believe it or not he got sick! One other thing is don't be afraid to change the recipe a bit I often toss in left over meats or random veggies that go to waste around here. Thanks again and good luck

    This recipe is so much better than dry kibble for cats. Kibble is depleted of moisture and can lead to kidney failure in cats! Someone mentioned earlier about avoiding garlic when it comes to cats, however, Dr. Pitcairin who is a fairly well-known vet who has written books about making your own cat food, says garlic is o.k. for cats! Helpful video-thanks!

    • @Survivin2Thrivin
      @Survivin2Thrivin ปีที่แล้ว

      Trace amounts of garlic are listed as an ingredient in a lot of canned cat foods. I don't think it's safe for cats to eat a lot.

    • @kittygirlc4120
      @kittygirlc4120 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Survivin2Thrivin, I never went to vet school, however, Dr. Pitcairins did. I think it's safe to assume that a famous veterinarian who has written many books on cats and dogs would not advocate for toxic ingredients. I'm equally fairly certain that he's not suggesting copious amounts of garlic in cat food.

    I really like your style of video!! Thank you for making it!!! Re: the soy oil, a little oil is good for kitties. They can't make their own omega 6 like other animals :). Your at food is nice! Any kitty would love to eat it. The only thing that I support that others have suggested is to add organ meats/taurine (in the wild cats eat more organs than anything :) ) and some bone meal, especially as the cats get older you dont want his little bones to break. Cats in the wild eat lots of organs and chew on raw bones, so their bodies have adapted to using those nutrients I guess :). I downloaded nutrient guides from US and Europe and canada and I'm trying to make my own cat food as well!! You've shown me it can be way easier than I was planning!!! I will keep this in mind :D thanks so much!

    Thank you so much for this video! Our cat recently turned away from her pricey cat food. She only likes pricey rotisserie chicken which in our neighborhood starts at $ 14.99 for "All natural" rotisserie chicken. I put some bone broth (without onion or garlic!) in her bowl to keep her hydrated and will see the vet soon about what I can do for her so she doesn't become a malnourished kitty! Your video gives me hope that I can prepare her food economically. Thank you for your research which helps so many cat lovers!

      I'm glad my video gives you hope. I suggest looking in your local meat shop for trimmings from chicken or Turkey. Organ meats and some of the less desirable parts of the bird are still great for making cat food. Be sure not give the cats bones though only meat. My cats make noise and jump when I butcher chicken in the house they know the trimmings are coming to them.

    well, we have a kitty from the streets, abt 4 months old. i started buying whiskas but it was too expensive and she just kept getting hungrier and hungrier. so the instant i saw your recipe, i went out and bought a kilo of chicken thighs, carrots and caulli flower. i cooked all that, it had 4 or 5 pieces, a bunch of carrots and a big floret from the caulli flower. i deboned it and kept the bones so i can give her sometimes something to chew on, i crushed the veggies and mixed it all. my husband said we could eat that! it looked so apetizing. so i gave the kitty a bit and she really liked it. so thank u so much for posting this video. i looked for something cooked or semi prepared because i dont like the idea of raw food for cats. its more natural but also speeds up the growth of worms and the likes in their intestines. thanks again! and i just read u can add potatoes and rice?

    as a suggestion try adding some poultry liver or clam juice or powdered taurine to the mix. and grinding and adding in some bones or bone meal. it will help round out your cat food. oh and rolled oats instead of oatmeal. taurine is very important especially for a male cat. it supports the internal organs. so is bone meal provides much needed calcium. as he gets older he needs more calcium and magnesium to take care of his organs and skeletal structure. besides that you have a reasonably rounded diet.

    Cats are obligate carnivores. Oatmeal is high in carbs, and a high-carb diet will eventually give your cat diabetes. The cat doesn't need all those veggie either. Basically what the cat needs is meat, preferably raw meat. Heart meat is high in taurine, and the cat I'm caring for now loves raw chicken hearts. Also, store-bought boxed broth is bad for both people and pets. I recommend making homemade bone broth using organic chicken bones (including chicken feet), carrots, celery, and apply cider vinegar to draw the minerals out of the bones. You can find recipes for homemade bone broth online, and it's much healthier than boxed fake broth. It's easy to make in a crockpot.

I've been told it can be purchased however I just feed my old boy a can of store bought food once a week and he seems fine however a vet will say different but my cat was basically homeless when I brought him in and he's survived my ways for 7 years and his health seems great his in good condition. Let me know how you make out

    Hi, do you freeze the food after you make it? Do you add any supplements? Did you have challenges getting him to eat wet food after he ate kibble? I'm looking into making my own food for my kitties. Thx!

      Shawnafied Yes we freeze it. We have many different recipes. It can be difficult to get them to want to switch but eventually they get hungry and it's all good. I still give him store bought hard cat food sometimes just so he gets his needed supplements that way.

    Chris, thank you! Can you do an update? Also, I’m going to steam my veggies a bit. I think a week and half in fridge (air tight), might be too long. Have you tried freezing? The high end wet and dry expensive food with all the vitamins, flax, vegetables, salmon, chicken by products, taurine etc. causing mine to vomit. With your recipe, you can always add a supplement, omega 3, down the road (talk to your vet. Find one who understands otherwise find another vet who does).

    Hi, I am just attempting this but I can tell you that those little cans of chicken have chemicals in them. It would be so much cheaper at 89 cents a pound to boil up some chicken yourself then cool to remove the fat. Pull right off the bones. The other thing that had me run across this is that cat's need other nutrients beyond this as also noted for the Taurine. As someone else said I would cook those carrots, which you could do in the same pot as the chicken. As far as the Oats go watch out as they are spraying those with chemicals these days. The reason I won't buy most foods is the GMO Soy and Corn, but it has gotten too expensive for me. You can find those Sardines packed in water instead! Thanks for the video :)

      SURVIVORMARY I feed my cat some store bought food from tine to time so he gets some taurine. This concoction was never said to be organic, gmo, or chemical free. It's just a home build alternative to expensive not so healthy store bought cat food. I also change the ingredients often based on what I have on hand. Also keep in mind I rescued this cat several years ago and he's happy, healthy and very active. I can assure you it's better than what he was eating when he was a stray cat roaming the streets in hopes of finding a meal. I'm so glad you shared your ideas for modifying the recipe to be healthier. It's always nice to switch it up for the cat so he doesn't have to eat the same thing constantly. Thanks for your support and watching the video much appreciated!

      ThisChickHere I store enough for a couple days in the fridge and freeze the rest in the deep freeze in containers that hold enough food for 2 or 3 days. I always serve cold. The more meat you can use the better for your cats.

  • @etherealexperience4302
    @etherealexperience4302 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this! Btw, cats eat about 20 times/day in nature. They graze/hunt. It is a human concept to eat 2-3 times/day. It’s best to feed cats a small amount as many times as possible each day. Ever notice how they constantly cry for food? They aren’t human & our dietary schedules don’t suit them.

  • @garry12777
    @garry12777 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    More exact measurements?
    1 cup of oatmeal- turns to 2 once cooked.
    How much carrots?
    Mixed veggies?
    1-2 cans of assorted meats (turkey, chicken, salmon, or sardines)
    The carrots & mixed veggies are the filler (along with oatmeal) so more exact measurement is necessary. That way you can multiply by 2 or more to make a bigger portion

    • @thisandthatwithchris1984
      @thisandthatwithchris1984  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      garry12777 usually about a cup of oatmeal bud but other than that it's never exact varies a bit from time to time. Theirs nothing exact about the world I live in. Thanks so much for watching!

    I love your video however I'd make a few changes...no canned chicken since it's packed with preservatives. Would be best to get some chicken strips and cook them up. My only real concern is the amount of time you keep it in the frige. Seems it would go rancid after a week. Have you tried to freeze it in portion sizes. I have 3 cats and one is a special needs, but my concern with him is the same as you described. he bloats up after eating his canned cat food, and doesn't feel like doing anything. I see clearly something is wrong and some days he just flat out won't eat it. Next time I go to the store it's going to be kitty making food time to give it a try.
