I used Top Charoen about 10 years ago after using another company and although they were double the price of the other company they were and still are functioning perfectly including the scratch resistant part of the lenses....you get what you pay for imho and the service was excellent.

About the same as the UK. You can pay up to £500 if you go for all the 'bells and whistles'. I saved money by buying on-line and they come from the USA!

Here in India, you can get very decent mid to high ranges antiglare glasses in 50USD. This can even go as low as 25-30 USD if you're not so choosy. If you prefer some European branded glasses, then also you can manage it in about 100USD. The eye checking etc. the process remains the same, no extra charge for that.

I went to Top Chaoren in two occasions. One time I bought a pair, I visited second time couple of years after and did not buy the second time. I have figured it out since then.
I will need another pair within weeks and I plan to ditch Top Chaoren and go elsewhere.

  • @hisukhpal
    @hisukhpal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good if you are satisfied with the quality and price. No need to compare once you already paid. Things will differ depending on various factors and different countries.
    FYI....
Ray ban frame with custom/tailor made branded lenses 2400-2500 Thb.
Blue layer is anti glare coating.
If the person wearing and the person paying for the glasses both are happy then don't bother how much is spent.
However majority of your other videos are very informative and elaborated in terms of quality and pricing.

My extra thin ultra high density multi-focal lenses and frames cost over AUD 1,000 three years ago in Australia so the upper range of USD 600 is not much cheaper in Thailand. The lenses are made elsewhere in Asia and flown in so you would only be saving on the labour in fitting them to the frames in Thailand.

  • @MrMrLeechill

I switched to progressive and never looked back. Great for a bike, scooter or outdoors. In the car, not so much. They require UV light to change and automobile glass blocks UV light, along with most structured glass facades. The upsell is BS and unneeded. Good job V... hope you enjoy them.

As soon as you said there was another store Vee wanted to go to I immediately thought Top Charoen, of course it is the only eye place I can think of there. The process looks pretty much like you'd find in the states. Only test I didn't see was the glaucoma test, that is the one were they send a puff of air at your eyeball. The thinner lenses make more sense the worse your prescription. Last pair I got before I got laser surgery I didn't opt for them and the glasses were really thick but I was only going to use them for about 6 months so it didn't matter. I went cheapest lenses and frames and they were still around $80. Mine was around -2.5 I think which isn't good but I know people who are much worse.

I am in toronto canada. those same glasses here would be probably 650-750 cad. those ray ban frames are expensive. but it is the progressive lenses with anti scratch coating and anti glare coating and the tinting that also drives up the price. she chose a great frame. lovely on her. 👍 good job. i watch all your clips! love the channel.

Nice informative and entertaining vlog Lucus. Thanks.
    Reminds me of a story.
My brother was suing Lensotica. The parent company of almost all the major brands. They control the market. The case was a slam dunk for my brother so they wanted to settle out of court. Which is also a slam dunk for my brother. Before the settlement hearing my brother bought a pair of RayBans on the beach in Mexico for $8.00 and wore the into the settlement hearing. Funny touch.

I bought my last pair of glasses about 2 years ago and paid over $350, even with my insurance (I live in New York, but bought my glasses in New Jersey, near my job).. The 3 things that brought the price up were: 1. Progressive lenses, 2. Scratch resistant (and they scratched after the 1 year protection plan) and 3. thinner lenses, because my eyesight is pretty bad. I didn't go for the lenses that darken in the sun, maybe next time.

The company I work for does a lot of automation in the states at the facilities that make the glasses. Its a pretty cool process, using several different types of machines. 5 days isn't bad at all, and I am sure it is done with the same level of high tech machinery there as it is here. Stay healthy!

Progressive lenses are actually built in bio-focals or in some cases tri-focals...transition lenses are the lenses that become sun glasses when exposed to sun light. I just got a new pair here in the US yesterday...progressives with transition lenses...total cost was $267 USD and thats AFTER insurance.

This place a bit like a Thai version of Specsavers, which is the big glasses place in England.
In UK you would have your eyes tested before picking a frame.
I have quite a strong prescription and I also have the lenses that go darker in the sun and thinner lenses. I usually pay about 250 to 300 GBP, so if anything I'd say that glasses are a little bit more expensive in Thailand than UK, but not much in it. Definitely not cheaper than UK prices, although it all depends on the frame

for eyeglass shops that is pretty normal pricing for the USA too, but that seems high for Thailand, here, I just had cataract surgery last year, and for that they build your prescription into the lens they insert into the eye (I'm early average is age 72) Seeing again clearly and only needing readers is amazing.
For my family glasses- we have been using an online eyeglass store (there are several and none slip me payments/ the one we used was eyebuydirect) and there again, frames are everywhere from 9 bucks to much more expensive, and lenses have all the same options, but I'm usually checking out either for myself in the past or wife or daughter for $150 for two pairs of glasses. **have to have your prescription done locally at your eye doctor.
I think there must be some online option for Thailand too, but service after the sale is important too as you mentioned- those stores are everywhere in Thailand so if you need a adjustment or lens popped back in or whatever, they will take care of you.

Hi Lucas - I very much enjoy your videos. I have just gone through the same experience getting new glasses here in the UK. Professional eye test with an optician was 35 pounds. So I bought a pair of glasses through his store, designer brand - 230 quid. Took the prescription and ordered designer glasses through a web-based retailer - 35 pounds. Both very nice glasses but I think you can see where the mark-ups are.

My first pair of spectacles was nearly $700 but that was a 'ray ban' frame and full multifocal transitional lenses. After a trip to Thailand I have regular glasses for reading and distances and pairs of sunglasses for the same at a fraction of the cost. Got to love Thailand.

  • @jimmyjimmy4286

Thankfully i dont wear glasses myself but it seemed like a very fair price to me R4K especially if they are original Rays (they looked it).
The service you get in the prof thai establishments is usually better than elsewhere in my opinion so i think thats where the real 'value' of buying over there comes into play. Its the same deal with the dentists sometimes roughly the same price for certain treatments but maybe you get slightly more for your money and better service over there.
Good choice by Vee i thought and more substantial than the last ones and kind of you to pay too (i got the feeling you sorted that side of it out for her).
All the best from the UK 🇬🇧

In July this year I got some new glasses from Vision Express, a nationwide chain of opticians here in the UK. I had an eye test first and then I got two pairs of glasses. First pair was for computer/reading work and the second pair was for driving. Different lens types in each. Total cost was £465 and that included a £120 discount. £200 for one of the frames; £130 for the other; £40 for one pair of lenses and £170 for the other pair of lenses. The eye test and a few other bits and pieces make up the total price.
My only comment about the opticians that you visited was that the eye exam equipment and procedure looked a bit outdated.

I saw on a program, all the frames are made in the same factory in china doesn't matter if it is Ray-ban, Gucci or whatever they just throw in different boxes depending on the brand. Luxottica controls 80% of the glasses market, and 70 % are made in the same factory.

@@pepelemoko01 Yup, I saw the same program. It's basically a monopoly rivaling others such as the Debeers diamond company.

I was in Vietnam after it opened in the '90s and got few cheap pair of glasses ,and there was a selection cool looking frames from the soviet era, (they had boxes of frames )One frame was thick unbreakable plastic, that you could fold in half. I guess Luxottica moved in there too.

The glasses were around Uk prices certainly not cheaper - having said that they looked good on her 👌🏻

It all depends on the frames she had fairly expensive frames, my glasses I bought were one third of the price I paid for similar in Specsavers.

In 2018 I had a eye test and got 2 pairs of reading glasses for $218 AUD in Changmai. Still using the glasses today, just waiting to get back to get eyes checked again.

Top Charoen - you pay for the air line hostesses and glitzy service. Owned by one of the richest family in Thailand. I bought frames from them many years ago. Many issues. Never been back. Always use a local private owned shop. Lenses all come from same 'factory'.

I did get some new prescription classes in Jomtian. Progressive lenses and I paid $ 240.00 without the eye exam.
Always depending on Frames. $350 is a good Price. In Canada I paid close $ 600.00 Canadian.

Wow you paid top dollar. I buy frames online for under $50 and go to a mom and pop opticians near me and get Hoya progressive lenses for under 2k. I'm in bkk by the way. They also have the eye test machines :) zennioptical is a reasonable place to start.

Yea that sounds correct price Here in the States, but I would think they will be cheaper in Thailand!! Of course, go with Ray Bans due to high quality frames.... The Blue tint is the antiglare coating and use the lens cleaning solutions with the micro cloth..

Two things I liked that I never got here in the US. The trying on with lenses before the actual making of the glasses and the eye exam after the glasses arrive.
As for price, about the same as here - insurance usual give from $100 to $150 for frames and lenses start at around $100 and go up depending on the changes for progressive, coatings, etc.
Can sometimes do better at the warehouse stores (Costco, BJs, Sams).

Vee looked very posh in her new glasses. You pay what you have to pay. I think uk prices are a bit cheaper, but I'm like you lucky in the eyesight department. Vee seemed very happy with her glasses so that's all that counts. Good insight there Lucas (pardon the pun). Bri and frei east Yorkshire.

Congrats on the new glasses, they look great, I can confirm that the tests look the same as what we do here in Finland but the prices are insane considering its Thailand :D You can get a pair for 200-300 EUR with the same lenses with actual name brand frames here easily, not to mention when there is a discount going on.
