I have always heard of there being an infamous episode that was the proverbial 'beginning of the end' of Dawson's MG stay. I had never seen it until now, and I absolutely believe that Richard and DebraLee were completely in the right. The contestant's answer was a general one; that the matches were 'too specific' is an absolute cop-out on Ira's part. To match college - TWICE - and buzz on finishing school and night school is absolutely absurd. I'm glad to see that the contestant was invited back, because that otherwise would have been an absolute dropping of the ball on the show's part. You could tell that Richard and DebraLee were both still upset about it during the closing credits.
Just saw this rerun - it was infuriating! That was so stupid that some were a match but not others. Glad he was invited back and I hope he won a ton of money.
@@janlady2204 Craig (The contestant that lost because the judge didn't accept the other school answers) returned in episode 1008 .However he did not win a ton of money.
I just saw the ending of episode 1000 where Johnny Olson was announcing the following week's panel (This panel of Ed, Brett, Charles, Debralee, Richard and Patti), and when they got to Richard, he was holding a card that said 'Never Finished School'. A little Foreshadowing there...
If you REALLY want to see Genuine outrage, then watch the Bag riot! The contestant answered with "Bag", the other celebrities answered with "Paper Bag", but when Richard answered with "Plastic Baggie", they didn't give him the match on the grounds that there was a difference between Paper and plastic. Richard pointed out that the contestant didn't say Paper, but just "Bag". What made matters worse is that the next response (by Fannie Flagg), which was "Paper SACK" actually matched! Richard was FUMING!
That entire lower tier was cheated; especially Patty. Night School is still school in the traditional sense of the word along the same line of college and regular school. For Ira to overlook that and buzz her was completely out of line. I assumed he gave Charles a point because he put the box around the word "school"; and did not give Debralee and Richard a point because school was left plain thus a part of the name "Finishing School" . Either way, I feel, Ira should have given everyone a point since school was identified and in previous games, if the word was given as a match it was a point.

I think the only reason they even gave him 'Scuba Diving School' was because CNR insisted the 'Scuba Diving' part was just decoration and not part of the answer. But still, unfair on all ends.

Richard also won for the most matches, despite the riot, at a total of 13. Charles matched 12 times, Brett matched 9 times, Edward matched 7 times, Debralee matched 6 times, and Patti matched 3 times.
Here's my take on Ira's thinking. I'm not saying it's right, but it could be the explanation. Ira (The Judge) matched Edward and Brett since they were generic answers (College) to the contestant's answer (School). The problem started with the interpretation of Charles' answer. Notice Charles' answer card (Scuba Diving School) has "School" written with a highlighted box around it. Initially, Ira buzzes the answer as too specific. But then, through Gene, Ira asks if Charles meant "School" as his answer. When Charles says yes, that through Ira's judging out of whack. None of the lower contestants had the word "School" boxed in and Ira must have felt that those answers were too specific as a result. In any event, the question should have been tossed and replaced. At the very least, the contestant should have been invited back.
haven’t seen this episode in years. i honestly think the judges were so caught up in their own egos and angry their decisions were panned by everyone that they were gonna buzz patti whether she had written school or some weird answer.

Thanks. Didn't catch that.
The contestant was invited back at a later date.
@@ap70621 Do we know which episode? I'd like to watch and see how they address it, how RD acts, etc...
TheHouseOf5Gables Episode 1008
@@crissrudd4554 thank you
The contestant Craig got ripped off.
It wouldn't have so bad if they hadn't matched Skydiving School!
Bringing him back doesn't promise he would win, which he would have in this show!!!
haven’t seen this episode in years. i honestly think the judges were so caught up in their own egos and angry their decisions were panned by everyone that they were gonna buzz patti whether she had written school or some weird answer.
That was kind of difficult to watch. :0
MatchGameProductions I just notice is this where you got the profile picture you used next to the name MatchGameProductions?
Stephanie Lively yes
@@MatchGameProductions Thank you! I like that picture but I like the new one as well. Sorry again for the delay in responding.. I being enjoying the episodes and getting nothing else done..
does anyone know the actual date this episode aired??....(i'm amazed it actually made it to air)...
July 8
thx..i remember being in front of the telly watching ''General Hospital'' instead of MG!!...UGH!
this was a Friday episode..with five episodes taped in one day, one can only imagine the tension if this occurred earlier in the week - like a Tuesday or Wednesday....
July 8, 1977
HOLY BLANK!
THUMBS DOWN on this crappy episode. If the word SCHOOL was written on the card they should have given it to him. WHO do I write to complain about this travesty?!!!
Probably the Parklawn Cemetery!
@@cunningarrayofstunts6051 So funny, lol.
Does anyone happen to know what episode Craig was invited back and what Gene said about how/why he was invited back?
It was in episode 1008 that Craig was brought back & Gene did explain why he was brought back
i feel for the contestants: they're square in the middle - and it shows......
Ya really. He got ripped off.
Ira: does not match Charles

Craig was FOILed by Richard's answer.
You mean by Ira the producer
Single-handed
Ridged show in veiwing
A party girl is a whore?
This episode is so wrong
I really do love every year of match game 70s series but so far I'm really digging these 77 shows, Charles must have felt very comfortable kissing Cathy since she looks to have a little bit of a moustache
It's spelled "mustache"...
@@laurenewittmer2511it actually is spelled both ways, look it up

Brett gets on my nerves
total rip-off
Gene raybern cost the contestant a tie..
How did Gene cost the contestant a tie??? He had fought before for an answer and lost, see 411 and 418, even then they didn't understand why Ira didn't match Leslie's answer. He must have fought for 5 minutes over Hickie with Ira and Ira still wouldn't give the match to the contestant.
@@sdlively27 your right ...mainly because Ira's a dick who changes the rules when he feels like it.
Night school and finishing school are not even close.
Neither was college
or scuba diving school
It has the word school in it.. Night SCHOOL. Finishing SCHOOL
@@jamesbonnen college kind of means school.

Boy that guy got ripped off. I guess that's what you get for upstaging "the star" with a great golf joke. I thought exact matches were suppose to be for the big money match. Ira is an jerk.
