    Note: I noticed when watching back (and Patrick Kerkhof pointed it out also) - when I held UP down at the start, I recalibrated it by 100 degrees. I have since set it back up by 100 degrees. ie. when I did that I told it that 350 was 450, so it was cooler than it should be by 100 degrees.

    I crinched when you kept the left button down, thinking I hope he doesn't change the temperature now. Which offcourse you did. I have the same iron so I know how it works. What you did was change the calibration of the iron. That is why the temperature went down afterwards. It was at 350, and by what you did you told the iron temperature was 450. So afterwards it went back to the set temperature of 350 (which you still had selected). So my advice is recalibrate it or at least set the calibration 100 degrees higher. Also there are 2 modes you can use. To set the temperature each time manually (the mode it is now in) or preset modes (I think 3 5 or 7 presets).
    Tip, read the manual! :-) Great iron and I think it will do you a lot of good, enjoy it.

      @@GadgetUK164 There is a good Hakko USA video on this, in which they effectively apologize for the stupid interface. Once you screw up the calibration you need to reset to factory settings. Otherwise what it says is 450 (after you 'adjusted' it) is really 350.

    One thing I noticed is that you went in to adjust mode, that's actually recalibrated the iron temperature so it's probably off by 50 degrees or more. Best to reset it. This is done by turning it off holding the up and enter button together while turning switch on.

    Both MVG and Dan Wood did install and setup videos on the plipbox a few years ago. Likely the software is in a github repo or similar location... and on aminet. I had an internet connection on my A2000 back in 1995 using a software TCP/IP stack and PPP/SLIP over a dialup back to the university network. The software was from some company in Finland...

    That's why now I use only T12 soldering irons... btw. Antex had superior tip mounting over the Hakko, and I believe it was the best tip mounting system before T12 came out. I had Antex TCS and it was really great, but can't match with T12, which has a great thermo-coupling, and despite low thermal mass of the tip, it can keep the temperature rock solid. It heats up from 20°C to 350°C in like 12 sec. and with T12 you'd be probably be able to desolder this cap on 350°C setting.

  • @SamuliTuomola_stt

    13:37 iron with an integrated tip would help with that by removing the gap between tip and the thermal element

    if that iron is properly built the mains cable used should be rated for at least 16A.

      @GadgetUK164  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't like to imagine 13A going through that cable, even if it was rated at 16A - it would act like an element.

    Brass sponge goes in the little cubby between the sponge and iron, which you might have already figured out by this point in time!
    Edit: I really should watch the video before posting 😂
    I don't bother with foam sponges any more, brass does such a better job and doesn't go all manky. 🙂
    Also you don't need to do the nut up so tight, especially not with pliers, it will hold in place quite well when finger tight.
