Mine has served me well since I got it in mid 2014. Yes, the 700-degree setting is the best use of this tool. Like you, I don't use the wet pad anymore. I found as long as I use flux, my dirty tip caused no problems. I do jamb it into the brass "Brillo" sometimes to scrape it clean. I clean my completed soldered areas using a Q-tip or brush dipped in lacquer thinner instead of the traditional denatured alcohol.

Suggest you throw away the sponge and replace it with a can of Hakko Tip Tinner Paste (part no FS-100-01). I use double sided tape to hold the can in place. When you dip a hot tip into this paste, it applies a coat of tin on it to keep the tip in top condition when not being used.

The Hakko gets it done. A temperature controlled iron changes the game. The Hakko 888D is the one I recommend to people who want to get a decent iron.

I hear you brother!… The only thing available when growing up (10 years old) was one of these Weller “gun with two-stage trigger” and it seemed that it had 1 megawatt power with the dual prongs… I learned early on that I needed something a lot “gentler” 😂
I also use a very similar vise all the time… mine’s from Dremel.
    Great video Mike!

This is nice if its the only one you get. But it can’t decided if its a bench unit or portable. If you have the money get a full station with a desoldering tool and hot air gun. Then a hand held unit or butane. Love the butane ones! You can adjust the flame so it acts like a hot air gun for shrink tubbing. Plus you can carry them up a tower.

The Milwaukee battery soldering Iron is a great tool, been soldering for decades and its much better than all of those gas irons you can get, even the expensive Gas Wellers. For hot air, well you can use the tip to shrink it iout, or in the workshop you should have a hot air soldeirng gun like Atten model.
Problem with gas irons, I have had a couple blow up in my face because I pressed too hard on the tip, seperating tank from head, also they expel hot air from the sides which if you are not careful can burn you or components.
Nope, stay clear of gas soldering irons!

Pay a little bit more and get it from a certified hako distributor . You’ll get a longer warranty vs Amazon is only like 30 days. And possible fakes on Amazon if you read the reviews. That’s what I did no bs . Make sure you buy extra tips in different sizes and tip runners for storage. If you have extra dough buy the weller that costs a bit more. It has a better core for raven constant heat distribution.

It sort of does hah. But that’s what I like about it. I don’t have kids, so no worries there. I’ve always just thought it looked “fun in a Japanese kinda way .” I finally got one last week. It does not mess around. I should have grabbed one way back in time. I wasted lots of $ being cheap. Also wasted many pcb’s because I didn’t have proper heat transfer. All of a sudden I’m a desoldering master haha. Also there is a lock-out code you can program apparently. It’s just perfect for me, and I find soldering really fun now.. It does “the thing”
I’m not a shill I swear. I’m just passing it along!

Good to have a reference for tools we use in our hobby. But bruh... is this a ham radio channel or a product review channel? These days propagation is insane, yesterday I worked New Zealand using a x5105 and a qrpguys efhw deployed at a park, at night. I'd like to watch you hunting some great DX with the insanely good radios and antennas you have. 73s

    • @Dusty_Ham

This is definitely within the ham radio wheelhouse. A lot of hams are builders as well, and having reviews like this help find good products to spend our hard earned money on. If you don't care for the video, don't watch it. There are a ton of ham tubers out there, I'm sure one uploaded something you approve of recently for you to watch instead.
