I know what is lathe, i know what is for, but i never had the need to have one and never worked with it. When i want to learn something new, i want to see the and start from the very very basic. I want somebody to explain it to me like never seen that thing before, or i have no idea what is that for. Later off course i move on, but i think Leah's channel is like a startup-pro

      I have never owned or used a lathe. I am retired and saw some bowl turning videos. A friend suggested I start with a mini lathe so I finally found your site. I liked how you explain things like I am a 5 year old. I like how you actually show how things are done on film. I like how you explain every little detail because for this I really need to be treated as a 5 year old. I will be watching a lot of your videos just trying to learn for now. I really appreciate your time and patience. What brands do you suggest? A friend suggested Grizzly, another just said look on ebay, one said check out harbor freight. I did not even know there were companies that built something like this! Maybe you answer these questions in your videos. Thank you anyway, I'll be watching!

    Thank you Leah. You are very ingenious. I appreciate you showing folks about a wood lathe, its parts and their names and the principle behind the operation of it. I was a lucky kid, in that my Dad had a little home DIY shop and raised me in it. He traded something and got a little wood lathe and had me trained in its use, well before graduating elementary school. I made matching lamps, handles, and such. When I got married and was moving our stuff, I accidentally dropped my wifes Mothers table lamp and it busted. I stuck it together enough to measure it and glued up a chunk of wood and, with my new wife there with me, I turned a lamp base, just like the one I had broken and drilled it and put all the busted one's hardware into it and gave it to her and told her, "this one wont break !" She love it and asked how long I had been doing this type craft. When I told her I had been doing this stuff from 8 years old, she was amazed. I had a good teacher. Thanks again, Leah.

    I'm a woodworker going on 3 or 4 years now. The one thing I haven't done yet is turning. I'm surprised I've gone this far in the hobby without giving it a shot. Well, my neighbor recently passed and his widow asked if I'd like to take a look at his tools. I had no idea he was a woodworker! I walk in and there sat a JET 16X42 EVS lathe. I bought it of course! I've been watching videos for a few days trying to get an idea of what I need and how to proceed. This is BY FAR the best beginning lathe/turning video I've found! Sometimes people forget that for those of us starting out we really don't know anything at all. Thanks for going over the lathe, how it works and the centers on either side. She couldn't find the centers and I wasn't sure which type to buy. I know how to get started now. Thanks!

    WOW!!! I've been wanting to use a lathe for a long time. Sadly, I haven't been able to find anyone to show me (I'm a girl so God forbid I even LOOK at a guy's tool), nor found any books/videos that I felt truly helped. They were good for educating myself on how tos, safety, etc., but none that made me feel like I was ready.
    I stumbled on your channel when I saw your 'find tools cheap' video and loved your advice about taking a closer look. It was so refreshing to FINALLY find videos that are not only educational and highly informative, but also easy to understand, follow, and not feel stupid or talked down to. Not to mention enjoyable to watch! (I've already been watching your videos for almost three hours and it doesn't feel like it! Lol)

    Being a wood turner I feel that your tool rest was adjusted a bit to high. Generally for most lathe tools the tool rest should be set so the cutting edge of the tool is in line with the center of the wood blank with the handle parallel as you stated. Reason: If you should get a catch, the turning wood will did deeper into the tool because the wood is still coming towards you. With the tool at the center, if you get a catch, the wood is turning away from you at that point and the less tragic it will be. A lot of videos on lathes on youtube. Appreciate you clear explanations in all you videos. Nice job.

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Dwight, thanks for commenting. Interestingly, someone asked earlier if the tool rest was positioned on the center-line. I explained that it was, however, the camera angle distorted this. Nevertheless, I appreciate you explaining to the community the importance of tool rest position to prevent catches.

    This is a great video. I watched it several months ago before purchasing my lathe. Then it came in, I set it up and I could not get it to work right. So, my lathe sat there, and finally, I figured I spend a lot of money on the lathe and accessories and I need to figure it out or give it away. I came across your video again it, and was encouraged to try again, and I got it to work. I cannot think you enough for all your great videos.

    You are so very cool and watching your videos gave me the confidence to go after it with my new lathe - I love the way you walk it step by step and learned so much from you - thank you so much and God bless you

    Leah, I have been a woodworker for more than 40 years but never had an occasion to work on or the need to purchase a lathe. Well, I just recently purchased a medium quality lathe to start making the usual, bowls, handles and the odd small turning projects. As luck would have it, I happened upon your video for beginners on lathes. I am so glad I did as you taught me a lot of things I had questions about. You come across as friendly and not a "know it all," as some other instructional videos tend to do. I have subscribed to your videos and am looking forward to watching many of them.
    Regards

    Hands down best newbie DIY channel . She doesn't drone on endlessly, knows what info is most relevant and has the very rare ability to explain things in a way that doesn't make you feel stupid.

    I have been turning for about a year now, and am self taught. Wish you had made this video a year ago, it is the best video to help a newby to get started turning. You're an excellent teacher.

    When you look back over the course of your life, you find that you remember the teachers who reached you - who helped you understand or see something in a new way. You are one of those teachers. I' m a 54 year old police officer who wants to start wood turning, so I found your video. I'm so glad I watched it. A Good teacher open doors, empowers, and succeeds in giving you a gift that he or she saw in you, and so you have it for life. Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Officer Peter Harris

    Like many, wish I'd had these vids when I was first starting out in DIY. Better late than never, though, and now binge watching to see what I've missed. A lot of people have the information in their heads but it's only a few who can transfer that information through teaching.
