- A Fernandina Beach woman who coughed on and then threatened another shopper inside a Jacksonville Pier 1 Imports was sentenced to 30 days in jail Thursday, followed by six months of probation.

When you are out in public, you are going to be judged for your behavior by people around you and yes the security filming you. When people go off like this on anyone...albeit a clerk, a waiter, a salesperson, a stranger, they deserve to be judged for the knuckle dragging people they are. Nothing warrants that kind of behavior amongst adults. If you cannot treat people with respect, you deserve to be put on blast no matter if it's not "anyone else's business."

I watched that hearing with all the ZOOM difficulties. What bothered the judge the most was that the defendant showed no recognition of what she did to the victim, who had been battling brain cancer for many years. She showed no remorse for her actions but spoke about how she became a victim. I would have given her more than 30 days.

Yes, I agree...and she wears a mask to protect her attorney but wears it below her nose, the tone in her voice when she argues with her attorney about "are we going to get back into that?" when her attorney offers to have his client apologize on camera..And the fact that she started disappearing from camera view any time she had a chance where she was free to be as indignant as she pleased without being seen by the judge. I didn't think you could do that in video court.

Six months at least she should have got. It's all about her, her, her, nothing about the victim. I'm sorry but this woman p***es me off!! Her impact statement should have been about how sincerely sorry she was for doing this to the woman with cancer, which could have killed her, and not about her and her kid's. I understand the kid's are dealing with the mother's poor decisions, but that's on the mother, not the victim or judge. That Judge isn't going to care for the me, me, me attitude. I also understand that the victim in this situation is who confronted the woman to start the provocation, however, that doesn't give anyone the right to cough or spit in anyone's face. Both of their statements sounded as if they came from entitlement and we as people need to be mindful of other's around us as we don't know what they're dealing with.

Well....considering that in California a person with AIDS ....who knows it and intentionally has relations without telling that other person they have the deadly disease....isn’t charged with a crime anymore because that’s “homophobic” according to California. There are people going around purposely infecting other people with AIDS....and they don’t get charged or put in jail in that state now. If there’s going to be punishment for something like coughing....then there should be equal punishment in every state on the spread of deadly diseases and even those not deadly sexually transmitted diseases that have life long effects to live with. But I don’t see anyone being put in jail for infecting people with herpes or anything like that. Herpes is a lifelong problem that people have bad effects from...so why aren’t people being jailed for transmitting that to partners? If you’re going to punish one....you must start punishing all.

Anytime someone tries to cover for their friend says that's not who their Karen is is in complete denial because that's exactly who she is. I find that even more personal because I am dealing with the exact thing with brain cancer and just had my second surgery 3 weeks ago.

There is not one of us who don't have bad days sometimes lasting years. I don't know anyone who is immature enough to even think of the concept of maliciously coughing in someone's face at any time, much less during a life threatening Covid epidemic. It reminds me of a small child who has never been taught boundaries, manners or civility. For an adult to not have control over temper, emotions and physical reactions is incredible. And in the Perp's statement at sentencing, it was all about what this has done to her own life. I would have been falling over myself to express regret and compassion for what she did to the victim. This tells us all we need to know about this woman as a person, as if we didn't know already. In view of her expressing regret for mainly how it has impacted her, I believe her sentence was quite lenient.

Parents should think about the backlash of their actions. Especially if they have children. You're setting an example and you're setting them up to be bullied. Even if they can fight and hold their own, now they have to defend themselves for a fight their parents started. So think about that Karen's of the world.

This one was one of the worst, most self absorbed, narcissistic “apologies” I’ve heard in my 23 years in practice. Thankfully the judge had her number. He’s apparently been doing it for more than a minute as well. We can smell the phony sincerity a mile away. Here it took no special skills; she reeked of “I’m really the victim” and “woe-is-me-itis.”
