  • The Mojito is a cocktail with more than 400 years of history, and today we’ll find out how it has changed through time to see if it’s evolving! We’ll dive into its history and look at 3 very different recipes from the one inspired by the pirate Francis Drake, to what Ernest Hemingway may have drunk in Cuba, and ending with my preferred take on it - without the need for a salad of mint and sugar in your glass. If you are ready for this edition of Old vs New, pull up a chair and get ready - it’s Cocktail Time!

    I like to make a mojito in the style of a tom Collins, shake rum lime mint and syrup and strain it to avoid the salad. That mojito cordial sounds amazing

    Limón uses the sufix -ón, which is used in spanish to denote something big. Hence, Limas and Limónes are used for the small and the bigger citric fruits, accordingly

    • @ellyam991
      @ellyam991 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here in Colombia most people would get confused if you said limas, people usually say limón for limes and limón importado or limón americano for the yellow one

    • @cronosmu
      @cronosmu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ellyam991 This. It's mostly the Spaniards -a small subset of Spanish speakers- who use the word "limón" for the big, yellow ones. I think the Argentinians also make the distinction between lime and lemons, but I'm not totally sure.

    • @cronosmu
      @cronosmu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Except the word for limón came from the Arabic (laymun), and that one ultimately from Sanscrit (nimbu). Lima also came from the Arabic (limu), which was borrowed from the Tamil "elumiccai". While it is true that -ón tends to denote something big in Spanish, and you would think that a limón is a big lima, there was the un/on (keep in mind there's no phonemic 'o' in Arabic) in the original word for lemon. Both words were then borrowed by the Andalusians.

    That 1930 recipe is exactly how I do it. Small difference I pull the mint-sugar-lime mixture upwards to cost the inside of the glass - don't know if it actually makes any difference, but it looks cool and attentive to the guest. 😅 I learned that that are two ways to make a Mojito - a fast one and a proper one. Most Mojitos are shaken and/or have muddled lime and/or Angostura, and they're not good.

    • @KevinKos
      @KevinKos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you are right, there are many different Mojito recipes out there, and every bartender has their way of doing it. I think that's the beauty of this cocktail too.

    Hemingway did enjoy a drink like the Mojito while out on his boat, Pilar. Gregorio's Rx was created by his skipper, Gregorio Fuentes, which he made for Hemingway when he was under the weather. Many believe that Fuentes and another Hemingway skipper, Carlos Gutierrez, both served as the basis for the character of the old fisherman Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea.
    Gregorio's RX :
    1 1/2 ounces Papa's Pilar Blonde Rum
    1 ounce honey syrup (made from a ratio of 1:1 water to honey)
    1 ounce lime juice
    4 mint leaves
    Add all ingredients to cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a glass filled with ice. Add sparkling water to shaker. Swirl and pour into drink. Garnish with a mint sprig.

    For a confort point of view, i understand why a "minimalistic" mojito would be a good choice. But regular mojito is just a classic, that look with all the leaves inside the glass represents for me the essence of the drink.
    Anyways, i'll never say no to a mojito in any form hahaha

    Might be a rookie question but can someone please tell me how much is a “glass” when called for in cocktail recipes?

    • @SirZorgulon
      @SirZorgulon ปีที่แล้ว +2

      About 2oz / 60 ml.
      Before jiggers were common, they used to measure cocktail ingredients in small wine glasses of around 60 ml capacity. The exact size probably varies from place to place, so I can’t say for sure how big a Cuban “vasito” would have been, but 2 oz is a good approximation.

    • @ApostolosK06
      @ApostolosK06 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SirZorgulon thanks a lot! I recently got the savoy cocktail book and I was a bit lost with the measurements, couldn’t find a good answer on glass/wine glass measurements.

    I always avoid to muddle the mint too much and remove the stem. When you shred the mint in a blender, doesn't this treatment release a lot of bittern?
