  • As the Imola weekend approaches, anticipation intensifies: at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the SF-24 car will undergo significant evolution, transitioning to its 2.0 version as unanimously agreed upon. This substantial upgrade will feature noticeable changes in aerodynamic concepts, ranging from alterations in sidepod inlets to adjustments in bodywork shapes. Not only will there be changes in the aerodynamic profile of the car body, but also in various other visible and less conspicuous elements. These adjustments, albeit minor in aesthetics, promise several advantages in terms of lap time or the potential for further concept development.
As McLaren team principal Andrea Stella highlighted in a recent interview following the Miami Grand Prix, "every intervention can enhance performance," indicating the considerable scope for development that these single-seaters still possess. Teams continue to identify areas for improvement race after race. For Ferrari, this means addressing key weaknesses revealed throughout the 2024 Formula 1 championship. Even in the Miami Grand Prix, the SF-24 encountered challenges in slow corners, particularly in turning and, to a lesser extent, in traction phases-a concern more rooted in mechanical aspects, particularly the rear suspension system, rather than aerodynamic load.
Nevertheless, the rear setup can significantly respond to aerodynamic load, allowing adjustments favoring traction with softer setups. Greater downforce translates to increased tire energy, leading to advantages in warm-up and overall performance. Enhancing traction in slow corners, crucial on circuits like Monaco, demands a more robust and responsive front end. Ferrari, akin to McLaren, will address this issue, particularly in suspension mountings to wheel hubs, modifying characteristic attachments. Further adjustments are expected in the front suspension, including redesigned triangle covers to optimize airflow.
Yet, the SF-24's innovations extend beyond visible impacts, with Ferrari likely to intervene in the 066/10 power unit. After completing the initial six events without technical issues, it's time to introduce a fresh power unit, capable of maximizing performance potential. Coupled with this, we may witness optimization of hybrid software-a domain where Ferrari stands to gain lap time. In the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Ferrari and Red Bull demonstrated closely matched performance in terms of top speeds and overall pace. The new power unit should enable Ferrari to strategically rotate components for races prioritizing chassis and aerodynamics over horsepower.
