@@luke5896 To think I could have been a Smash Pro! But I guess networking is pretty fun too 😉 Thanks for this comment, it made my day 😂 All the best on your ENCOR!
To give more context about this time period: This is actually similar gameplay to how I played a lot of that year, the only difference being which matches were and weren't recorded, and/or which were uploaded to the internet or not, so I have less credibility than I should have had for that year due to pure bad luck in that aspect (I've said this many times, but it gets memed on because I can't prove it, or have less data to prove it than I should have had). IMO my best performance this year was the 9-0 vs ChuDat/PC Chris in LF/GFs of FC:Diamond the week before this, where I had crowd cheering and strong mental state, and managed to get multiple 2 and 3 stocks on them (low % with both of the 3 stocks on each player actually), making that tournament my best lifetime performance against both Chu Dat and PC Chris. I was really excited at how I played during that tournament, and couldn't wait for the matches to be uploaded online so I could show the world how great I can be at my best, only to find out that the videos were not properly saved, and would never be uploaded. I became extremely devastated and depressed after learning about that (but I didn't learn about it until a few weeks or months after it happened), since 90% of the reason I played was to show the world how great I was or could be. I'm not lying when I say that I played better at the end of that tournament than half the sets I played a decade later, and I'm not speaking only relatively either. I believe it's because I was solely focused on Melee then, without Brawl (which game out 7 months later) or other games (or life goals like college or anything else etc) to distract me from my goal of being as good as I could be at Melee at that time. Will elaborate more when my book comes out (yes it is still happening eventually 100%, I've just been focused on so many other things lately, so it's significantly more delayed than expected).
Don't let this big comment distract you from the fact that m2k didnt even win this tournament where the crew battle took place, losing to PC Chris in grands.
@@kingarthur3236 okay and? That doesn’t take away from how good he was back then, even the best of the best don’t win every single tournament. You don’t see MkLeo three stocking all of his opponents and winning every super major tourney
Another thing to note is that oldschool Melee was on "vanilla" Melee, so things like consistent dash back, pivots, shield drops etc were all not possible (this is why things like spotdodge were a bigger part of the game because you could risk missing dashback randomly and get shield grabbed just from bad luck. Doing what Zain does for example (the best of both worlds with dashback and pivots) is 100% not possible in most of Melee's lifespan[2002-2016/18] basically because of vanilla Melee restrictions (UCF/Slippi recodes the game to make dashback work on any controller with no luck involved). Since we're all spoiled nowadays by things such as UCF, Slippi, controller modders, and free access to information and various resources (can simply look up the "correct answer" by watching another pro do something), it's likely hard for most to imagine the limitations/restrictions of the past, in both what can be done consistently and free access to information.
Oh wow, a Melee mini-doc focusing on crew battles? This format has a TON of interesting history that a lot of people nowadays just don't know about, so it's super cool to see you giving it some spotlight!

2007 m2ks marth just brang smart and in modern melee age "normal play" to the table. Standart situations like a optimized chaingrab on fd, a down throw gimp or good ledge options were all more or less invented by him

Walt usually does like changing one or two things in the background of stuff he has showing while he does a voice over, I'm guessing it's just that since the cutout of hbox is done more poorly than in all the other people there. Would be funny if that's the case though lol

@@MeesterTweester Oh okay! I didn't actually know that. I stand corrected, thanks for even giving a link too. (Shit now I gotta watch this video again to see where the funny addition Walt put in was)
More so how at that point he was solely dedicated to being the best at melee and ever since 2007 he’s been having to juggle multiple games while his competitors in each respective game didn’t.
Yeah mentality, ambition, but also execution. He mentions that what he means by 2007 m2k is that that was the peak of his techskill/execution - everything he wanted to do, he did correctly.
It’s less that he was better then and more so better relative to the others around him. Pretty much everything has an upward trajectory in terms of achievement, so you have to judge it based on the time period.

Respect to everyone who participated in the event, as the skill of opponents is what sets the stage for an epic showdown in the first place.
Can confirm - this is the only part of the tourny people were talking about afterwards. It was most certainly a meta-changing moment and helped usher in the modern era of Melee.
Loving the content man! Also loving your commentary work you have done recently, keep it up mang, I can see a big eSports org picking you up for content creation, would be so dope if you could get sponsored
Awesome video! The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is how the narrative of the video suggests that this crews performance was seen as more important than PC Chris winning the tourney or m2k winning FCD the week before. Everyone on Ken's crew was pretty washed at this point, so this wasn't all that surprising at the time.
It's said that when Mew2king was born, his hands were seen making quick, erratic movements. It's been later revealed that these movements mere manifestations of melee tech Mew2king religiously practiced....Years before Smash was even conceived as a concept
