one set id love to see is m2k vs plup at summit. where m2k lost 2 games in the sheik ditto, went fox game 3, and then marth game 4-5 and did the reverse 3-0. that was so crazy/weird
Never understood the whole port priority thing, in terms of why they even designed it that way. Why wouldn’t the developers make every port, you know, identical?
@@eleven9286 to avoid having to deal with the scenario of them grabbing each other and just getting locked in place or something It really is one of the only realistic way of dealing with it other than awarding priority by something else random like weight they could write code to cancel both attacks out or something, but it's such a niche scenario that people would be confused and it risks adding more bugs

Something that's always interested me about Plup is how he just does this kind of thing ALOT. Winning or losing, if he doesn't wanna play he just kinda gives up mid-set. He's still good enough that him not trying can still net him a set win as this set also proves. I've always felt like Plup could be the best player in the world if he just had the mental fortitude to continue playing as incredible as he's shown capable to do. It's definitely not easy to have that will, especially against even better players, but he's capable of so much and he's so emotive you can see the moment he tunes out the game usually, at any time in the set. This set and video is a really good introspective on a big trend for someone like Plup. Great video.

I think one of my favorite ultimately insignificant sets in Melee history has to be Taj vs. Colbol at The Big House 6. It was Taj's only major tournament that year, and he hadn't made a particularly notable run at any Melee tournament since Evo 2013 over three years prior. Then out of nowhere, he comes back to beat the No. 25 player in the world with Mewtwo, finishing in 33rd. From what I remember, that was Taj's last really notable win at a major tournament.
the big house 6 is full of those sets. axe vs r2dliu, zain vs plup (it didn't matter for a while, after that) and I think rudolph vs ice? Big House is always filled with anomalous sets.
"sometimes when you play super smash brothers, you just lose" but that wasn't the tale it was a tale of plup getting lazy with his strategy and losing because of it lol. And plup has lost the same way to hbox a few times later.
I think he mentioned enough of that in the video. His main point is that life isn't a story, where there's a clear main thread that summarizes absolutely everything. This is sometimes true, but the world is often a lot more complicated than that. If Melee, and the world in general, had a script, then there would be tons of dropped plot arcs and no deeper meaning. Looking for grand narratives generally ends up with you being flat-out wrong. Sometimes, there is no real deeper meaning to analyze.
@@BenjoCovers in almost anything competitive you need far more patience than in regular play. Even if it is aggressive in nature and requires you to explode in energy, at certain times. unless maybe, hot dog eating competitions or something lol.
God, I've seen the EmpLemon video, but imagine being as good at the game as Hungrybox that people pay to fly in another player just to practice against him to be ready for you
Is no-one gonna talk about the bird alligator thing... That blew my mind. Apparently it's cuz the alligator gets food caught in it's teeth so to avoid infections it let's birds clean the food out and eat what they want from it teeth.

Also, I watched this set live on twitch, and I remember being stuck in absolute disbelief for nearly an hour after this set. It was simply insane to witness, especially as a big Plup fan.

A game that springs to mind with a similar "meaning" is the 1st game of The Lake vs Nintendude. A Zelda main 4-stocked one of the best ICs mains in the world... and loses the set. This set does have a lot more views, however.
I love lore and history like this, and I remember watching this set live on stream. Great video :) I'd say my takeaway was that the margins are so small at top level melee that you can't ever take a single game off, sometimes not even a stock. Hope to see more videos like this!

Puff is only good in melee because its THE Fox counterpick: turns Fox's best trait into a hazard and preventing the execution of the main Fox gameplan. change my mind
@@jakefromstatefarm6969 yes and most characters have 3-6 members of the cast they are strong against; if Fox was not the best character, Puff would have its roll usurped by the counter pick vs that best character; Puff punishes fast aggressive play, if the best character was DK for example, say all his attack started on frame 2 and had extended hit box/more invo frames: Puff would have very few tools that would be useful in that match up, the character with the best dodge+counter hit game would have Puffs current poition in the meta; Puff is good in each of your examples because its gameplan is unchanged, and thats the point of a counter pick: to force the opponent out of their optimal gameplan, while being able to execute their preferred method of combat.

This is really really good!! Imo my fav set of all time is Hax v Mango at Pound (the one where mango went marth) because of the infinite layers of storylines and great gameplay, and there are so many other sets worthy of this analysis.
