great video mate. I started running last June at 50 yrs old and couldn't even manage 3k without blowing. effort was the key word for me and being exactly what you talk about, above average. im 51 now and since I started I have run c.1300 km's, done 120 5k's, 35 10k's, 5 half marathons and 2 marathons and lost 3 stone in weight. im not the fastest but im above average and loving it. keep the videos coming,
This should be a TED talk, 8:48 is so true and the reason so many people are put off, they literally see nobody in the middle of that curve. This video sums up why I started using Strava way back in 2012, that feeling of being above average and not actually crap is such a good feeling. Also skewing the graph to fit yourself is fantastic, I finish 25th out of 274th in my latest park run, which was 5th for my age group, I'll take that.
This motivational speach is WAY above average, would even say one of the best I've heard. My zwift career is only a couple of weeks old, but this motto is already motivating me to get above average.
Hi Mark, as a junior I used to be a useful rower but, in my twenties I'm afraid I let things go and in my late thirties I had to return home to look after my mother. This meant I had to stay home mostly 24/7 and the little free time I had I ended up going to the pub. Over the years my weight crept all the way up to over twenty five and a half stone. Eventually, after twenty years, my mother was admitted to a care home and I had some time back. After coming back from a break in Thailand to visit my brother, I gave up drinking, the thought of downing endless pints just lost it's appeal. I noticed the loss in weight immediately and decided to sort my diet out and eventually settled on a LCHF approach. Again I lost weight and then decided to start exercising and discovered Parkrun. I was always among the slowest but, got my time down to thirty four minutes and I got down to fifteen stone two. Two years ago my mother passed away and I lost focus. I had to deal with her estate and moving to a new home, then the lockdowns struck. I didn't deal with these things well and my weight crept back up to over twenty one stone. Then Parkrun returned, I had a focus again. I have just turned sixty, my weight is around eighteen stone ten and my PB for Parkrun since we returned, is forty five twelve and this week I finished second to last but the support I get from the community has been tremendous and watching your videos has given me inspiration to go for at least a half marathon next year. I managed a six and a half mile run this week, I only plod along slowly at my own pace but I really enjoy the long slow runs. Keep up the good work and know you are an inspiration to others, like me.
Dude, inspirational stuff. Park run is brilliant for a realistic weekly goal/target. Just keep at it. And know that others read posts like this and get inspired or motivated of the back of it 👏👏👏
You have a great message with your videos. I recently got into "above average" shape. When I workout at the gym one thing I will say to myself is "I'm not competing for anything" which helps to remind me that there's not need to absolutely kill yourself with fitness. I still see great results, but also don't let it completely consume my life.
19 minutes 5K PR!!!!! Damn It! I need to work harder - Ok ... I'm 58 years old and many will say, "run your own race". But I'm also very competitive and I also want to "compare favorably". I started running in 2017. So, you have set the mark - by my 60 birthday I need to run a sub 19 minute 5K. Thanks For The Motivation! =)
One of my weekly highlights 😂 Looking forward to your next vlog. I really like your humor and looking behind it I also see myself, 01.01.2017 at 56 years old and 120kg 190cm I decided to change my life, I’m not gonna bore you with what happened between then and 01.01.2021 except >47.000 Zwift kilometers later (that’s above average) I’m closing in on 60, probably shrunk down to 188cm (is that below average?) and here comes the best part 90kg. So today and for my age I’m definitely above average and that a great place to be, cheers Mark.
YES, my 5k Winter Warmer run saw me overtaken by a couple with PRAMS! I completed thatone this year of 2023 post Loch Ness Marathon, the year before with an attempt of 8ish miles.....I have been fitter, no doubt but I am taking away from this vid and other beauts that I NEED to train CONSISTENTLY and not just rely on sporadic motivation. I've set myself four or five more running goals this year from a 5k Glo Run to, YES, the Loch Ness Marathon. These vids really help me see the progress that can be made through discipline and effort and coming out from within my comfort zone. THANK YOU. Your wife is a fitness goddess, your family lovely and your dog is awesome.
Big up to the algorithm. Sound, sensible advice! You've got yourself a new subscriber. Looking forward to going through your back catalogue of other videos.
I usually hate TH-cam videos like this, but that's a pretty sensible mantra and a dog at the end. Subscribed. Especially the bit about skewing the measurement, there's something about that that naturally feels wrong but in reality that's what we are always doing anyway. Finding an application for own skillset to be above average.
In my opinion, you are clearly on spot, on the optimal line to keep being above average and not having to compromise other aspects of your life in order to become elite. Kudos! Hope your channel grows because your words are wise!!!
I went in my first park-run after watching your video last weekend. I've been running 5k once a week for a couple of months already. Your advice is good, being around others can inspire you to go faster. I took 2 minutes off my time I've been doing running around the oval on my own. I have to say, I wasn't ready for the mayham for the first 1k while the field sorted itself out. I'm not sure why they don't start it off in approximate order < 20 20-25, 25-30, 30-40 as most people have a rough idea of how fast they might go with < 5% being new timers.
Stumbled across you whilst looking into TET a couple of months ago Mark. It was clear you had something. This was it. Absolutely brilliant. Be better than average. Bang on. Well done and thanks for sharing, your message has trully added value to me. Cheers for that.
Mark you are so entertaining to listen to, I have watched a number of your videos and found them great. Please don’t give it up what you are doing, as a previous comment said you should be a motivational speaker. Great stuff, I will do my bit to make sure people watch and subscribe to your channel by sharing your posts as they come up. Thanks for making me laugh and putting a smile on my face and I hope to see you on Zwift sometime. Ride on!
Great vid as always Mark, it’s easy to forget how far you’ve come and it made me think of my journey from blob, to a bit above average! I’ll be honest zwift is addictive and it’s a great platform for bigger guys (nearly 100kg myself) to get competitive, keep it up 👍🏼
Love this mentality. I’m down 40 lbs since lockdown a year ago, mostly due to cycling and portion control. Now I want to compete - not with the best, but to be above average. Keep up the great content!
Cool thing too Mark, is as you add the years it's easier for a bloke like you to stay in the above average zone. I am 52 and nowhere near as strong and fit as yourself (yet lol) but I'm working on it and I'm already flying high in my age group. Although, as you say, there are always beasts about. Really look up to your Alpe du Zwift time under the hour. 100kg bloke, that takes some doing. Awesome. I'm 85kg carrying a bit of crap that needs to be converted. I'm on it.
So thankful the algorithm finally stuck you under my nose. I'm enjoying your videos, and love your philosophy. ...though I must admit it's a bit intimidating. While I would *love* to be above average, I appear to be below average in most things no matter how hard I try. Bit of an ego blow...but I console myself with the fact that I'm above average in sheer persistence and effort - and looking at a bell curve where the only participant is myself, while I'm not as awesome as I was when I was younger, I'm also waaaaay better than I used to be.
I'm fat and inactive and I'm using your channel for motivation SO I walked 10,000 steps today and I did back and legs in the gym. Luckily, I'm a 60 year old fat lady...I'm pretty sure that ANY improvement will make me "above average" in my age/gender class. LOL!
@@bronwynwolfenden8742 OOOOOOF! Still overweight, still struggling to be active, mostly in the exact same situation as before except that I stopped drinking booze and I weigh a little less. But really, fitness wise, the same. 😒 As per usual, I haven't given up. I just joined a boxing gym last month and I'm digging it. Longevity is my problem.
At 80kg I had a block on my ftp at about 200W. The last 2 years I stopped training for a specific number. In my head I was thinking to get to 220w I needed to train these intervals at these levels. You can end up getting quite dis-heartened. My break through came when I put the self imposed time restriction in to the bin. Basically stopped trying to force it. Yes I still had goals, but I don't need to attain them within 1 season. Also once my progress had slowed down, I didnt get as frustrated and just found other ways to stress and adapt my body, Ironically more time on the bike was a major part of it, but a lot more low intensity stuff. My loading increased , but I felt less stressed and less tired . Literally ride slow and get fitter/faster. I have never tried to lose weight, but at 5"9' I was a little heavy. Without dieting, down to 70kgs now, and ftp is 250w. Dont quite have the watt bomb of a bigger guy, but I would say I am above average for my weight even there, and most C cats. Consider myself above average, and set a goal in September of getting from 3.1W/kg to 4.0wKg by September this year. My approach has been ---- that's less than 0.1W/kg improvement per month ... I have all the time I need. Current;y at 3.57.... currently ahead of schedule ... and above average. ( Although Training peaks has Average at 3.7w/kg... but many reasons to think that is skewed and it is a very small sample of the worlds population with a fitness bias).... Love the approach Mark, oh! 54 and faster than I have ever been too!
@@MarkLewisfitness the caveat is that you do have to apply yourself and have a little discipline... but as you say it really isnt that difficult. Your health is probably the biggest investment you can make in your life.... give it an hour a day on averagr and a rest day, it isnt a lot to ask of yourself.
Love the advice about the amount of work to achieve a goal and knowing where the diminishing returns begin. At one point, I was a 14 handicap on the golf course. Had a lot of fun and generally competitive with friends. Was encouraged to take lessons to get better, but to what end? Was I going pro...nope! Why waste the money there when I could continue to be better than most and buy new clubs! Also, took your advice on the Innsbruckring course the other day on a Zwift race. 6'4, 215 won't get me many podiums, so I needed to find my victory. Slow rolled the course until the sprint. Got 4th out of all categories on the first try, then 2nd on the final attempt! Finished 2nd to last in D category, but I achieved what I set out to!
Love it, this has made me look forward to the Crossfit Open in a few months. It'll be interesting to see where I stand compared to last year when I was a beginner. Great message and channel. Keep up the good work.
Top video 👍👍👍 started training again since Oct still big and heavy but starting to enjoy run or rows whatever I training that day. Keep up the video really motivated to be just above average 🤣👍
Thanks Mark, always find your videos really inspiring and motivating. Having friends that obsess around the David Goggins mentality I find your approach much healthier, both mentally and physically. Keep up the great work 👍
When I was coaching rowing my mantra to any of my crews about to race, after giving technical and race instructions was to yell out "Do better! " It was an easy way to hold motivation in a long season for people to focus on whatever they can do better at rather than only focusing on the end result. If you 'do better' 3 times, chances are the overall result will be positively effected. Not dissimilar to your point of skewing the results in your favour however my ask of them was to apply it to any facet of the race not just metrics.
Just found this and have to say I totally understand where you are coming from. Being very active when I was in my 30's now hitting 50, I realized "What happened to me?" I've been on a journey to change that since April of 2021 and this aligns really well with realistic goals! Great videos, thanks Mark, Keep it up!!
Honestly, I don't know how I ended up here, but if it weren't for the type of videos you do, I'd love to see the stand up stuff 🤣 the dog jokes really caught me laughing out loud randomly in the street today 🤣🤣
There has to be a motivational book in there somewhere titled "be above average". Your content is very well put together and the editing is up there with the best who dont have the budget or audience size to justify outsource professionally. Ive found your Zwift journey fascinating, from the early frustration with the platform to winning races, its inspiring. My only concern is that your are becoming below average with the informal backdrop and must return to videos from the pain cave :-).
Great points Mark, I tend to compare myself to mates who run when I run, but I'm a triathlete and they JUST run, they smoke me by massive amounts, but compared to 'others' I'm reasonable. Awesomeness video, great pooch BTW you look like a UK Jocko Willinck with the new haircut 😉 Get Some
Great job Mark. Hope not all take your advice. That bell curve would then move to the right and I would be back to average. I want an above average wife - I do. I want to be above average husband - I am. At 62, I think I'm above average fit. Keep 'em coming Mark!
Very insightful/inspirational! I'm impressed with your 5k time for a guy your size though! But then as a 5'6", 80kg, 36 year old, busy dad of two (no dogs), and in grey/yellow Asics, I shouldn't really be comparing myself to you on that front anyway ;) 👍 Well done for your progression though!
Agree with all of it. You do realise though that by simply going and doing exercise you've already broken the mould, and are above average. Average doesn't do park runs, probably hasn't heard of Zwift, and their last session of any sort of exercise was a distant memory.
Hey Mark, As a big man who used to be a bigger man, it got me wondering. How could you perform now at your fittest if you weighed in at your heaviest? How would it affect your performance, and how would it affect your body? If you were to do a 5k park run with a weighted best weighing in at your peak weight, how would you do. Would be great to see a video on you now vs you then.
Great content, new subscriber here. Honestly probably if you jog or cycle at all you would be above avg at least here in the U.S. 😆 Also I think nearly everyone who would even be on Zwift and then even racing on Zwift would be above average cyclists compared to the average 7 billion humans. Then if you're above average of the Zwift racers then you really would be at the far right of the bell curve for 7 billion humans.
Great mindset, inspiring. Also If you consider what averaging everyone who is ahead of you across all the disciplines you do, you would be top 1%! E.g. There's no way guys who lift more than you can run ultra's. And no way those cyclists ahead of you could deadlift more than you etc etc
@@MarkLewisfitness Can I just say I’m new to your channel and loving it. I exercise a lot and use to play a lot of sport to a high level when younger but piled on the pounds. But since watching your channel something has clicked and changed my mindset on food! 2 weeks into intermittent fasting and already losing weight! I’ve got a pain cave and will send a pic/video!!
How did you get any better at ParkRun? I've been doing it for a few years and I can't improve. It is soul destroying still being passed by all the people with dogs and buggies.
Fantastic content pal...try to upload a little more often if you can...TH-cam favours quantity over quality unfortunately but I certainly think you can do both👍
Is it alright for me to compare myself to 58 year old men with dread locks, cause then I'd be At The Top - LOL Great Vid - I would love to see more of your paddle boarding. I just started doing that last year. Sooooo much fun!
I ran Parkrun with a dog once. Bad decision. Jesse is part greyhound. I am not above average when it comes to greyhound speed. She was telepathically hinting if we're going to run, let's run.
Hello ☺️ I really love to follow your weight loss journey and admire your work ethic and hard work to lose weight. Really motivating 💪🏽 New to your channel and hope we can support each other ❤️
Very strange motivation. I understand wanting to compete against other people that want to compete, but wanting to just 'be better than most other people in general' seems a bit desperate. Wow I'm faster than a bunch of people that don't care at all about running. Amazing
Dooood can barely hear you over the noise of munching my Pringles while scratching my fat arse on the settee. Use your headphone thingies as a mic. 😁🤙🏻

Even the video is above average. Well done!
Love your attitude and thought process. Thanks !!!
Great video, I like your approach so just subscribed. I find Strava a great tool to motivate me.
outstanding! thanks Mark!
Honestly, I don't know how I ended up here, but if it weren't for the type of videos you do, I'd love to see the stand up stuff 🤣 the dog jokes really caught me laughing out loud randomly in the street today 🤣🤣
Love the ethos, great vid.
Awesomeness video, great pooch
BTW you look like a UK Jocko Willinck with the new haircut 😉
Get Some
Very wise words! Great channel.
Lot of truth spoken here. This video also serves as a good motivational video.
Mark, you have politely described that the goal is to avoid being a "bell-end". I wholeheartedly agree with that philosophy!
This is fantastic, thank you.
Wow.. You can talk, sir! :) I'm down from 102 to 82kg in a last 5 month and your chanel was very helpful.
thanks to mark lewis, here's what i used to be:
50 years old, 5'9", 260lb male (youtube alias)
now i am
25 years old, 6'3", 200lb ultramarathon runner
Great advice!
Your content is way better than most.
Mark, I use,,,watch your videos for motivation. Thank you
Great job Mark. Hope not all take your advice. That bell curve would then move to the right and I would be back to average. I want an above average wife - I do. I want to be above average husband - I am. At 62, I think I'm above average fit. Keep 'em coming Mark!
I love your content! I just wish I could improve my running and drop the weight like you have 😀
sensational inspiration.
Great words.
Very insightful/inspirational! I'm impressed with your 5k time for a guy your size though! But then as a 5'6", 80kg, 36 year old, busy dad of two (no dogs), and in grey/yellow Asics, I shouldn't really be comparing myself to you on that front anyway ;) 👍 Well done for your progression though!
yes!
How old were you when you started this journey Mark? What's the biggest injury you've ever recovered from? Love the channel.
35. Been very lucky and had no injuries since I started other than losing the odd nail on an ultra! But I take recovery and rest pretty serious!
Profound! 👍
Agree with all of it.
You do realise though that by simply going and doing exercise you've already broken the mould, and are above average. Average doesn't do park runs, probably hasn't heard of Zwift, and their last session of any sort of exercise was a distant memory.
Great video. Thank you! 💪
thanks bro
Hey Mark, As a big man who used to be a bigger man, it got me wondering. How could you perform now at your fittest if you weighed in at your heaviest? How would it affect your performance, and how would it affect your body? If you were to do a 5k park run with a weighted best weighing in at your peak weight, how would you do. Would be great to see a video on you now vs you then.
It would kill me 😂 I might try it!
Great advice
Great content, new subscriber here. Honestly probably if you jog or cycle at all you would be above avg at least here in the U.S. 😆 Also I think nearly everyone who would even be on Zwift and then even racing on Zwift would be above average cyclists compared to the average 7 billion humans. Then if you're above average of the Zwift racers then you really would be at the far right of the bell curve for 7 billion humans.
The quality of your contend is definitely above average (by a long margine).
Do you put hormones in your overnight oats?
nice video, thanks for your honesty =)
What jersey are you wearing in your profile photo?
Great mindset, inspiring.
Also If you consider what averaging everyone who is ahead of you across all the disciplines you do, you would be top 1%!
E.g. There's no way guys who lift more than you can run ultra's. And no way those cyclists ahead of you could deadlift more than you etc etc
I think I might have seen you do stand up - did you ever got in Manchester ?
Yes. Would have been 11/12 years ago though
Whoa, whoa there! Where is the additional stand up footage???!!!
Hidden out of sight 😂
@@MarkLewisfitness Can I just say I’m new to your channel and loving it. I exercise a lot and use to play a lot of sport to a high level when younger but piled on the pounds. But since watching your channel something has clicked and changed my mindset on food! 2 weeks into intermittent fasting and already losing weight! I’ve got a pain cave and will send a pic/video!!
How did you get any better at ParkRun? I've been doing it for a few years and I can't improve. It is soul destroying still being passed by all the people with dogs and buggies.
And nowadays you're all about the vegan flapjacks! #progress 😂🎉
Great content Mark as always... 'Hell yes to above average'... think I'm just gonna quickly unfriend Kipchoge 🤣
"you can buy my book on Amazon, this has been my TEd talk"
Inspirational video. Thanks, it got me off my arse today lol
i like the dry deapan comedy of this channel
Random question, what watch is that you are wearing Mark?
Thanks
Had to watch the vid to check 😂 That is a GShock Frogman Borneo Rainbow Toad Special Edition
@@MarkLewisfitness awesome, really appreciate the reply Mark, thanks!
No wonder you are on the road at Greenpark, the gravelly surface of the footpath is really annoying even to walk on!
Fantastic content pal...try to upload a little more often if you can...TH-cam favours quantity over quality unfortunately but I certainly think you can do both👍
Is it alright for me to compare myself to 58 year old men with dread locks, cause then I'd be At The Top - LOL
Great Vid - I would love to see more of your paddle boarding. I just started doing that last year. Sooooo much fun!
I ran Parkrun with a dog once. Bad decision. Jesse is part greyhound. I am not above average when it comes to greyhound speed. She was telepathically hinting if we're going to run, let's run.
HA! Dog selection error there 😂
Trt?
"... Predator watch list" LOL LOL
So, is my bell curve of 'best of the 160kg trail runners' a bit scewed? 🍻😁
You Sir are fucking hilarious 🤣 *subscribed*
You have very fitt dog!
That's testosterone for you.
Funnily enough I had very low testosterone levels during this. War bellow where they should be.
Awesome videos. Like, subscribe, all of the above.
