Great review to a great game. Just as an example to those that like physical copies (like myself), I finally got my copy for the Switch this week from Limited Run Games~ well over a year after this review was posted. But, it was well worth the wait to me to have this in-hand rather than only digital. Bring on Curse of the Moon 3!
There hasn't been a peep about Castlevania, AND the only latest Castlevania (The mobile one, something Grimoire), didn't even arrive officially to the US before it was discontinued.
Caught me off guard this morning too. I saw the 'coming soon' trailer and figured it'd be 2021 like everything else. Found it on PSN out of nowhere and now I have to eat soup 'cause I spent my food budget on shiny things. Again.
Best fucking reviews in the game. I didn't even KNOW there was a Bloodstained 2 until I saw this in my sub box. Looks like a really fun time to be honest, even if you have to play through the game multiple times. I think the thinking for devs when they do this is that they've created a fun enough system of combat and by tweaking it in significant ways, going through the same areas gives you the familiarity you need to feel smart and strong but the new mechanics presented gives you a new reason to push through and change how you played it through the first time. Tying the story to it can be kind of lame or diminish the experience, but I feel like with these games the story usually isn't spectacular or mind blowing anyways so I assume the devs know this and were hoping that wasn't the main reason you're going through, but giving you more and making it seem like the "real" ending would just be another reason to go through it. Either way this game seems like a super solid effort and like a lot of fun to play, excited to see if my younger brother or sister (maybe both) will be interested to play this with me.
I'm more of a Metroidvania than a Classicvania yet I also loved Curse of the Moon so much because it was a style that I'd never really played much before. Ritual was excellent but Classicvania are far more rare and a good Classicvania really stands out as a result.
The "padding" arguably happened with the first game as well with regards to how certain endings basically required replaying the entire game a second time. Not entirely certain that's what we're talking about here, but it sounds quite similar. That isn't even taking into account the various number of endings the game had in general. Still, it was a fun enough game and short enough that having specific clear conditions to open up "new episodes" felt reasonable. Deaths from falling have been pretty awkwardly punishing in it's "old school" kind of way since it simply killed off that specific character and sent you back to the start of the section. I recall finding myself in more than one jumping or timing critical section just to repeatedly lose 1-2 characters and have to restart the run numerous times. Still, a satisfying experience and I'm looking forward to the sequel delivering a similar experience.
I am playing ritual of the night right now and I love it so far. Great game. Would love to see a sequel with maybe a little bit more budget. I mean it looks great, but it could be better :)
When you get a damn dog in a Mech suit I about fell out laughing. This game is a lot of fun. I like the multiple endings and unlocking different campaigns and story arcs. Haven’t beaten it yet though.lol
I will say though the fourth playthrough, where you choose between the 7 stages ala Mega Man to gather allies and discover all the upgrades, along with the ridiculous premise of going to the moon (complete with a shmup level) was worth the repetition imo.
Definitely check out if you haven't yet, I'm playing it with my friend over remote play and we're having a blast despite the fact they definitely upped the bullshit factor like traps and medusa head numbers. COTM1 is imo the superior game over Ritual and I'm happy classicvania fans get something too in 2020
Honestly it's mostly just me prefering this style of game over igavanias, although gotta say that I felt RotN was "cheap" in many places - the models, textures, and all. Felt unpolished to me, even after updates
Bloodstained is basically the new Castlevania, since Konami have decided to focus their attention on pachinko machines. If we do see a new Castlevania, it will probably be made under contract by a third party developer.
There can be 50 of those and I'll buy and beat all of them. Both of the games are so good I would still easily pay 60$ for each if they were that expensive.
i hope curse of the moon 2 is a hint that ritual of the night 2 is in development. I am curious what robert and the corgy are like in the ritual of the night continuity
You guys really should have went into how the chapters works. You briefly went over it, but gamexaplain does a much better job at helping you understand why you have to replay 4-5 times and how you can make it a bit easier on yourself
@@Maverick.D. Jumps and movements feel stiffer and there is a lot more stuff flying around the screen. It's more elaborate in that regards and while I am enjoying it, I definitely see the comments about it feeling padded.

I definitely find it hard as hell. First game was a cakewalk compared to this, at least for me.
@ I'm having to start over a stage multiple times because of a mis timed jump or movement etc. I also find that I have to actively swap my characters out and generally being kept on my toes. Its difficulty is definitely reminiscent of the older Castlevania games.....and I don't even have knockback enabled.
Technically Konami did recently release a new Castlevania game: Grimoire of Souls. However it's a mobile game, only barely got released outside of Japan (not in America though; only Canada) and was recently announced to be shutting down in September after only a year in action. Which is pretty pathetic. Once again, Konami proves that they are the literal fucking worst. #FucKonami.
Wait, so you can play as the characters from Bloodstained 1? I guess I have less incentive to get the first game and just get this one instead, still, fucking amazing either way
