I got my 2 Barlows 45 years ago. We have court days here in Kentucky. Vendors come and sell their wares along with great food. Still work great and take an edge.
@@ISLANDOUTDOORS1 I love the Barlow knives I own 3 one imperial and one shrade and one jigged bone rough rider my imperial Barlow is a pig to open out so I left main blade open on my carving bench I was hoping my carving blackthorn to make Irish shillelagh would loosen the main blade but time will tell I also own a buck trio knife in fact I love it so much I bought another made leather pouches for my knives easily carried around my neck on paracord as my whittling pocket knives thanks for sharing excellent video greetings from the uk 🇬🇧 🍀👍🇮🇹🐾🦊
I am a Barlow nut so when I came across this video and this is probably the best I’ve come across so far I subscribed straight away to your channel!!! Thanks for posting. 👍🙂
Many years ago, my first collecting interest were Barlows. I had about 300 of them and eventually sold the entire collection. My favorite was an appaloosa bone Barlow by Case but I would carry a single blade barlow because it was "easier in the pocket." Thanks for this video.
I can only imagine how magnificent your Barlow collection must have been. All the different brands must have been amazing! Your collection must have told the Barlow history as well as this video if not better! Thanks for sharing Luigi
Hey there big fella haven't heard from you for a while just to let you know your missed hope you and your family are all well.love from ireland to you all.atb paddy🍀👍☺
Fantastic video, i carry two barlows as my daily carry. A back pocket grand daddy barlow with white smooth bone handles for rough work, and a nicer boker stag single blade barlow as my front pocket knife for finer work. No one gets scared of traditional slip joints like they do of tactical knives.
Was mine @ 8 yrs ole, given by GRamp's who raised me. @ 10 yr's ole gotta 2 blade one & still carry a XL Barlow today! Most Excellent Knife! TY 4 video LuV the History Lesson
ISLANDOUTDOORS1 I just found two in my grandfathers garage.....no idea the age, but I believe one is a standard size and the other is a Daddy? size. I have found so much old stuff.....tools, saws, etc.. but I am really impressed with the amount of things that still work after 30+ years.
I always loved the Barlow knife. I bought a bunch of them from a flea market dealer and I used to give them to friend or guys who would do some work for me, air still have a bunch and started buying more recently.. I still have some Colonial with printed scrimmage an the handle but I also have some from China nice knives and 1 Pakistani knife. I don't have anymore Irish knives though.. I used to sell knives on e-mail bay but not for awhile. I still like the older manual opening knives best.
I have the hardware store/gas station one too. Imperial Ireland like the clip point you showed first. Beasty fishing and camping knife that i actually used in self defense back in the 90’s on a nyc subway. Statute of limitations probably expired so I can now talk about it. Slicey slicey. Stays in my fishing kit. Cheap as f but good metals used and doesn’t have a spot of rust even tho i never oiled it. My edc is a handmade high carbon fix blade full tang handmade by my buddy Chris at Not Nice Knives. But the Barlow would make an excellent edc scalpel. Love it! I appreciate your video!
Great video, and fantastic discussion of the history of these knives. I remember having a few of these as a kid. It seemed like they were everywhere back then. They were available at the camp store at Camp Barstow, my boy scout summer camp in SC. I'm sure mine were all Imperial knives. I need to see if I can find one or two in good shape. Thanks for posting this.
Picked up a Schrade USA Grand-Dad’s Barlow new in box in an antique store in Kentucky on my family vacation over spring break Also found an Imperial USA Barlow in the same store
A Barlow like the first one you showed is the one I’m gonna be getting soon out of curiosity. If I like it it will become my edc until it falls apart. I can’t help but want one of those things as I collect traditional knives and edc a Swiss Army knife and an old timer stockman.
I just picked up an unused 2 blade Kingston Barlow at a thrift shop for $10 bucks, I love the size, weight and feel of this knife. I carry it right along with my Böker stockman.
@@southerncomfort7490 They were designed and made for different times. No good taking a flimsy thing with you to Boreal Canada or outback Australia. I have 2/3 older knives that have been put into very occasional use because the person who gave me the knife is no longer with us or I've had it so long I couldn't stand to lose it but no safe queen's.
@@jelkel25 Yes my friend but the Boreal in Canada and the Australian outback was conquered by men with a Barlow, Trapper, Muskrat or a Congress. True, they probably also had a fixed blade. Those who passed through the Cumberland Gap had what was called a 'Butcher's knife.' It resembled something similar to the MOD Survival knife of today. However, the vast majority of tasks were carried out with the aforementioned knives. These worked effectively for very active men well into the 20th century. President Lincoln, an outdoorsman who lived on the frontier, died with a Congress Knife in this pocket. In contrast, most of the knife purchasers today, armed with automatic knives, super steels and skull crusher pommels, never get further outdoors than the edge of the sofa. Action for them is finding enough 'AA' batteries to carry on their game of 'Call of Duty.' As they say in the Regiment: 'Light is Right'. As a certain James Bond was later to say "some times the old ways are the best."
Barlow knives made by CASE are so pretty. But I also love the rough ryder barlows. The RR are cheaper and are also nicely made. Someday I going to get a GEC barlow. My favorite knife is the CASE tribal lock with smooth bone.
If i had a few examples to show I would, but I only have 1 and it's in horrible condition. Thank you for the interest but I don't think I could make a video the Congress deserves.
I love these knives. Honestly I just learned it was a design and not a brand. I have a brand less Barlow with clear plastic grips and a paper 2a insert. It needs to be replaced because I use it and it's supposed to be a display piece.
ISLANDOUTDOORS1 you said you ran out of knives I have a suggestion for a new knife, the case mako/ hammerhead they are the case’s version of the buck 110 and 112 I personally carry the mako
you sure that’s not the #69 Schatt & Morgan Winterbottom Bone that came out late 2014? the furrows look to straight to be stag and the lighter part looks more like bone.
Gramp's called um a "Everyman's Knife" Liked the sound of that & Remembered it well ! My 1st was white handle one 2nd was a blue handle & better knife of good carbon steel can't remember the brand sadly :( !!
Great knife I've shaved wood with this pocket knife ate fruit apples pears cucumber widdled wood sticks small carvings to relax best 7.00 see China may make them but blueprints still from England they have kept there integrity.
cool pattern, love the few Barlow's I have:) Even tho I have mostly USA ones But a real sleeper is the "good as gold" flake Barlow from rough rider. The Chinese are getting much better and only $9.99 shipped. Sharp out of box and great snap/fit/finish:)
I have a barlow pocket knife it looks exactly like the one you have pictured except it has 3 pins on the brown handle and on the blade it says "colonial prov U.S.A." Oh and the "barlow" written on the bolsters is written in almost a cursive style
I have that exact Barlow myself . It's a keeper . The imperial that I have is one cheapo knife so I'll give it away . It's funny how close those two look but how far apart the quality of them are .
Love the Barlow. Must be the Tom Sawyer in me. Thanks for a great video

An old classic. I wish I still had my Barlow and my first Buck 110.
I loved all of your videos on traditional pocket knives. Respect from Turkey.
Excellent review of a beloved pattern. Thank you 👍
This is one of the best Barlow reviews I have seen on TH-cam. Well done! Best Wishes, Jay

I carry a Barlow everyday. Usually a Keen Kutter, Kutmaster w aftermarket stag or a Belknap made by Queen in the forties. Best pattern ever.
My favorite barlow is the queens #22 two blade yr. 1976
Cool
my grandpa gave me one of these. i lost it not long ago and every time i think of it i feel like an idiot
Don't be too hard on yourself, they are easy to lose. And yours may turn up. Best of luck. 🍀
ISLANDOUTDOORS1 thanks
My first Barlow was a black handle 2 blade case knife given to me by my dad in the 60's
What a great gift for a son, he gave you a quality knife right there.
They still make Barlows in Sheffield too, from the slightly rough and ready that are easy on the pocket to works of art that will empty your pocket.
Even the 'rough and ready' ones are pretty darned good. Remember, it is meant to be a working knife, not a 'safe queen.'

No pocket clip , no G10 scales , no high end super steel . How did our ancestors ever use such a primetive tool ?😁
Because they were made for function, not fashion. That's why they're still in production over 200 yrs later
