    So in researching the ILBE APB03 Assault Pack family, I find there are 3-models;
    - APB03 Corpsman Assault Pack (2380 cu)
    - APB03 Recon Assault Pack (2380 cu)
    - APB03 Assault Pack (1648 cu)
    The one reviewed here was the ILBE APB03 Assault Pack (1648 cu).
    The ‘larger’ APB03 ‘Corpsman’ (MEDIC) Assault Pack and its twin the ‘Recon’ Assault Pack are the same packs except that the ‘Corpsman’ is equipped with three insert-compartments for medical supplies.
    Shared because this clarified a few thing for me. Thx for the review - Cheers

    Thank you for another fine review, Luke. I came across this video only recently. Direct comparisons like this make a lot of sense, so keep up the good work!
    I have had the ILBE assault pack for a few years now and have found it to be very useful for certain "missions" in the field. Thanks to your review I got the FILBE version and really enjoy it so far. I agree with your assessment about comfort, breathability on my back, and other comments and feel that it is superior to the ILBE in many ways. However, I will keep using the ILBE, too, because it's still a tough, great little pack.

    Luke, Your "VS." of the main packs for both of these series of packs is what helped me go with the ILBE main pack despite your suggestion that I might be happier with the Savotta L Jakkari. Ultimately it came down to the pass through sleeves on either side and that I got a brand new ILBE off of EBAY at a "decent" price! THank you as always for all of your hard work that helps us all make tough decisions much more easily! Your friend, Bill Doyle in Upr Grnwd Lk, NJ

    For an edc bike (cruiser class hd) bag/pack the ILBE is a hands down better pack for its loadout design. At 1500 cubic inches its 8 inches deep main pocket is more easily packed and unpacked for common items on a bike, ie riding jacket etc as required in cerain areas. It took a long time of trying different loadouts to get a good feel and balance with more wider but certainly more shallow (specs 6"?) And definitely more rigid feel of the FILBE assualt pack. I admit both are very tough and dont fail under load, but having used both for extended periods of time in various locales it is a matter of loadout not just walking under basically normal conditions. I have always enjoyed the versus on TOGR but this test is a bit narrow in scope and info on things. The FILBE is a superb pack but loadout is a challenge being wide and shallow imo. I contract for many US military branches and in fairness it truly comes down to your loadout configuration needs. Keep up the great work but can you do a vs with actual loadouts of same items of actual use and compare? Resu.ts may be quite different. Stay safe out there brothers.

    For kicks, I hiked the FILBE assault pack w/ ~35lbs. a little over 10 miles a couple years ago, including a ~3500 ft. change in elevation. That was a mistake. A big one. That sucked. Bad. I've never done a similar trek with the ILBE version, but I'll never do something like that again without a true frame in any event (with that much weight at least). I did the same hike last year with the big brother (the FILBE main ruck) and about 55 lbs., and that made a huge difference. That thing rides so well, but it is heavy - but it's also made for that kind of rucking, so it's built for max punishment.
    As I said, given the choice I wouldn't run the assault pack (any kind) with that much weight for any real distance, but it is a GREAT truck pack/short distance/time get 'er done pack. The modular design is awesome and it is pretty comfortable for what it is and for more reasonable applications. I still love it, I just don't use for unintended purposes.

    Thanx for the test!
    ILBE corpsman vs FILBE regular assault please!
    Since they are close in price and capacity to each other. Ilbe corpsman has padded belt and better straps than regular assault, I hope that helps it get closer to filbe assault. I own old corpsman pack and I wish it good luck. If it fails I'm probably changing it to filbe ))

  • @joshhamm7038
    @joshhamm7038 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good test! But I think the ilbe back was at a disadvantage because it is a smaller pack and therefore isn't necessarily able to support he same loads as the filbe. So if you where to take that into consideration and put less weight in the ilbe pack the results would be different.

    • @Pellagrah
      @Pellagrah 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's nothing the ILBE assault pack does better than the FILBE, though, except for the sick MARPAT + coyote camo scheme. More expensive, less capacity, less flexibility, etc. The point is that you CAN load up the FILBE with 30+ lbs. of gear if you really wanted to, but the ILBE doesn't have that option. I choose my pack based off of how much I need to carry, personally, not the other way around.

    Of course the assault pack is better for hikes, that's why we use it lol. When I was in I had only seen that woodland ILBE pack but it was never a CIF issued pack and it stands to reason. When you're actually using it for its intended purpose, the assault pack will kick the shit out of the ILBE all day long due to build quality because its made for long rucks. To put it in perspective... we could fully load it down to 40-50lbs of gear and ruck 15 miles and it would still be comfortable to wear. Always loved that pack and I'll have to get another one for my hiking ventures.

  • @aaronflores1106
    @aaronflores1106 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had the old one issued in Afg, did a couple of patrols with it. The straps are too narrow, though the zippers are tough!
    I was getting out of the Marine Corps as the new one was getting issued out. It looks better for sure.
    Its a couple hundred cubic inches too big though, but thats just an opinion. Like 200 - 300 Cubic inches less would be great and still take it out for 3 days comfortably. In the old one you could fit a sleeping system, layers, water, food and very little else... somewhere between the 2 sizes of 1500 ci and 2300 ci would be perfect.

      same - as he noted, chest strap design (which carried it up higher to the shoulders) was better and back-pad conformity. I have an ILBE w/sustainment pouches and load vest, this way you have load distribution (SAR volunteer). Didn't know of the FILBE (mine is the Arc'teryx, was the one tested this OEM? Although don't think result of video would change.) BTW - 35lb is start of mid-weight loads and about the limit of mid-light foot gear. Many don't consider the correlation of pack-load to proper foot gear.

    As always, the answer is: "It depends."
    The FILBE is is ideal for kicking in doors and rounding up terrorists. It's not a good camping pack. It's a tactical pack. I own it. It's GREAT and is way better than most of the tacticool packs in it's class. It'd make a great truck pack for sure.
    I LITERALLY EDC the ILBE assault pack every single day. I've been using it for going on 5 years now. What can I say, it holds up to tons of abuse and use. It's not a camping pack either. It's another patrol pack. So it does it's job well and for the $20 that I paid for it,
    Going back to the it depends part, the FILBE is a different beast than the ILBE. It's light years away in features and design. Having used both, I'd take the FILBE for use that I had to live out of the pack for days. The ILBE is overkill for something to use everyday in real life (translated: EXCELLENT).

    I totally agree with ya Luke. I own both packs. Actually both complete sets with the hydration and main packs. I have my pack with the sustainment pouches attached as well as the assault pouch. With the sustainment pouches attached you can slide a small camp axe externally down one side. With all the pouches attached it makes this bag a bushcraft beast that carries a load quite well and comfortable. On long trips I attach the filbe hydration pack to the exterior of the assault pack with grim locks and it really completes my setup. Wish I could post pics here. Lol

They are used one day hiking packs with load of 15~20 pounds IMO, the performance is similar with Charlie pack a bit better. The frame sheet of FILBE is too thin/soft. In addition, Charlie pack looks much much better. The market value of Charlie is several times of the original retail price. That means something. Sorry buddy, I can't agree with you this time.

    • @andystephenson5858
      @andystephenson5858 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general civilian has better ventilation. Military surplus and things designed to be used by the military are designed with durability in mind first and have to be made within certain specs that don't necessarily lend themselves to traits like comfort and and ventilation for example the use of ballistic nylon is heavier and doesn't breath as materials used in civilian equivalents. Anyway there's always the option of buying a civilian pack that looks like a military one.

    I personally prefer the FILBE pack seems more comfortable..loaded with 250 rounds of 308 and 200 rounds of 45' ACP plus food and water for 2 days is not bad...the ILBE seems like the quality just isn't there...
