I haven't run a marathon yet, but did my first half at Royal Parks in October. I can testify that having your name on your vest and having random strangers scream encouragement to you absolutely makes a difference. I would never have believed that, but you can't help but feel better from the positive vibes. It does also made pacing harder, as I found out to my cost 😅
Waiting 3 hours outside in the corral before the race is just insane. I waited 15 minutes to start my one and only marathon😂 Thanks for the snapshot of all the logistics.
I got a quick video of Ben flashing by at mile 16. I missed Mary because I was looking for her favorite pink outfit. Tip: post your flat lay before the race to help your friends find you!
'Dragging a carcass with no soul in it'; Yup, that about sums up the race from 5th Ave 🤣🤣, and that little hill after it's all over to get up the 7th and make your way down to the circle.. ouch
I had so much fun at my first marathon in NYC. I think the organizers do a good job managing the insane logistics of shutting down part of the city and having 50k people run through it but yeah there's a lot for everyone to keep up with to make it happen. I intentionally did not put my name on my shirt because the cheering is enough and I cant handle even more stimulation. The city's energy is incredible though. Its true too that if you are wearing a medal, people will let you have the last seat in a crowded subway and comp you a drink. Experienced both myself. NYC is great.
You guys are both awesome!! All of these points will be so helpful when I get the opportunity to run New York. Of course point 11 is to watch this recap (goes unsaid).
your voice is just 🤣 I listened to a podcast from NY marathon today during my long run. Now I really want to experience that myself once. These tipps are perfect for that 👍
I just came back from the NYC marathon too. Your advice is spot on. Another important note is if you’re from a more humid environment, you may not realize how much you are sweating on the course, and dehydration can seek up on you. That happened to me, and I had some pretty severe nausea at the end. Also, bring from Alaska, it was a pretty warm day for me; summertime like temperatures.
Congratulations to you both. NYC is the greatest race, so much positive energy and love. It is like a religious experience every time I get the chance to run it.
New Yorker here. Congratulations to you two both for setting PBs on such a difficult course! I have been following your channel and love your advice for the NYC Marathon! I'll definitely be incorporating the time zone change advice when I do Tokyo next year in 2024.
San Diego RnR marathon is 330m up and 400m down and the gib hill (163 freeway) is after mile 21. But that is not the hardest part - after mile 9 the marathon splits from the half and it feels like running in the wrong direction as suddenly all the spectators are gone.
Ahhh well done Ben&Mary❤❤❤NY is definitely on my bucket list🎉🎉🎉super proud of you guys and thank you for being so authentic and sharing your experience in a pleasurable and practical way leaving me inspired and be like...yeah 😁😁😁thats looks like tough fun🎉😅
Love it, I’d like to add a comment about people cheering you on. It’s amazing to hear people cheering you on, but they won’t do it if your running next to someone in a costume I recently did the great south run in Uk (10 miles, not a marathon) and all I could hear was ‘GO ON SPIDER-MAN, YOU CAN DO IT!!!’ Never mind the sweaty mess that’s next to him called Paul eh 😂 Yes, I was jealous 😂
Love both of the videos on it it was really great. I wasn’t there we live thousand miles away, but we were joking that it was like the TH-camrs race because there’s so many of our TH-cam celebrities were racing. It was pretty cool to follow
I love watching you guys! I was running the half marathon in Santa Barbara at the same time you were running in New York! You inspire me every day! Ty!
I recently attempted my first marathon and indeed the cheering of my name totally caught me off guard as well. The first few times I started running quicker automatically (and I am a "nobody", noone knows me! Way different from than you two, so cannot imagine how many people must have cheered you on!!!)
Good to see u guys again so quickly after NYC 🩷🩵 Ben hope ur ok u sound like u have a nasty chesty something going in 😢 …… thanku as always for ur recount / tips …… always good to hear first hand - lotsa luv ❤
Really useful stuff guys! We've just signed up for our first "away" race, the Lisbon Half, in March. It'll be my wife's first Half and, hopefully, a big PB attempt for me (high confidence of that with Phily B's coaching behind me!) Knowing the kind f things to look out for will be key to as little stress as possible!
Oh funny re tip about the cups, but practicing the hydration method is important. I ran London last year and I became dehydrated because the bottles, which I’ve never used them, were discarded like I do cups - as soon as I reach the end of the hydration tables. So I tossed them half full (did not occur to me to hold on to them until I finished the bottle until midway through the race)
I was in the same corral as you! I looked for you. Disappointed I didn't see you but not surprised since it's so crowded at the start and everywhere along the course as well! I had such a great time and was so happy to finish. You both did a great job with your finish time. It's really not known as a PR course! I'm 62 years old and this was my dream come true marathon. Also my last. Such an amazing time! 🎉 Congratulations to you both 🎉!
I was in the Orange corral and didn't see you both as well 😢😢. It was my first marathon ever and the last 3 miles were extremely tough. I was cramping so bad and just my sub 3 hour goal (3:10:16). I wish i was running Boston 2024, but im not. I'm going for sub 3 hour in Chicago 2024 and Boston 2025. Congratulations on a great race.
7:45 Mary I couldn't agree more, most of the race the cheering and people shouting my name was amazing, but near the end when you cant even see clearly anymore it started to work against me, only hearing my name helped a little at that point.
Great movie and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am training for the 2024 and I still have a long way to go. But these video's keep me motivated and help with my nerves. Thanks from a beginner....
Love following your channel and great to see your epic PB’s and excitement you experienced in NYC marathon 👏👏…I’ve managed to secure a Boston place so I’m buzzing about that (if not a little overwhelmed with the logistics) and hope to see you both there 🏃♀️🏃🏻♂️💪
Thanks for sharing, some really important points here that race organisers should pay attention to. I recently did Melbourne marathon which was great course and race, but so many things that were missing from the website - e.g no mention that you get a race finisher t-shirt so loads of runners didn't know to go to get one!
Another point this video is going to be worth a watch again in October 2024 for those running this marathon, also nice black NB purchases, I guess at the expo.
Great advice both, I'm still the right side of 50 to make it my dream to have a go at some of the majors especially New York. Doing my first full marathon next April in Manchester and will see how the experience goes, fingers crossed😂. I know the cost can be massive but i believe it's the whole experience, your not just paying for the run, your going to New York for Christ sake!!! 😂 love your channel, looking forward to everything you experience next year in Boston. All the best. X
Congratulations 🎉🎉 to u both, and thank you for sharing your journeys with us! You both continue to inspire me to keep doing hard things. Signed up for my first marathon in the spring, so nervous🤣🤣🤣
5:18 oh yeah, regular breakfast on race day, I've gone to some lengths to pull that off. On a few out of town early races I've taken my own tea kettle to use to make hot water for the oatmeal i use 🙂.
Oh wow! I’m running the NYC marathon this year and this has been the most helpful video yet! I’ve been training for 7 months now and I’m still very anxious I’m a good way! I’ll be there 5 days prior! Are you both running this year?
One other tip for NYC - take a large safety pin. At the start they give out Dunkin beanie hats for free. If you take a safety pin you can attach the beanie to the back of your running belt so you have a souvenir. You can’t really carry it in your hand or wear it for the whole of the marathon.
I live tracked you both during the marathon and cheered you on! I also happy cried watching you both get PBS - you two are a massive running and adventuring inspiration. Thank you for sharing it all with us :) (Fingers crossed I'll get through the NYC lottery for 2024 - it'll be my 12th time hitting the lottery.. and the race itself is on my birthday, so that's lucky, right??)
Congratulations to you both. Loved watching both of your race vlogs. I recently did the Sydney Marathon, which has been nominated to be a future World Major, hoping to get that status in the next 2 years. Sydney, a stunning place to run, this course was also quite undulating and had a lot of tight turns and switchbacks, making it tricky for rythm and also tough on the legs in the latter stages. But like you said, you do your homework on the course, prepare and run accordingly. Well done again and keep on doing what you're doing. Very inspiring 🎉
The logistics puts me off these large events, too faffy for me, but I totally get the attraction. I much prefer the small events where you don’t have to plan so much and you can enjoy some silence and solitude during the run if you desire.
Thanks Stevie. Ben raced in the Alphafly 1 and I went with Endorphin pro 3. Have a range of shoes 😬 for training but I am always drawn to the endorphins 👍🏼
Good day sir. I'm just wondering what's your age, Zone 2 heart rate? I wanna comapare it to mine but I know it depends, but still. Thank you sir, good job!
I love running and your channel but this video just made me realize that I would never want to participate in such a massive event it seems so over commercialized, expensive ,uncomfortable and pointless for non-professional runners
It needn't be over-expensive Big 6 city marathons leaving a carbon footprint of a Yeti and a hole in the bank account. I personally think of hidden scenic marathon gems like the spectacular Eryri marathon in Wales. A nice local summer marathon in cool Scandinavia which I wish to revisit anyways? Or, right today Nov 12 a buddy runs the ORIGINAL Marathon in Greece. Flight for xx (!) Euros from Germany and he rented a whole holiday house(!) for some more days DIRT cheap because it's absolutely out of season. Cheaper than a day in the Major cities. Or a very local, scenic one near to your place?
This is why I really have no desire to do these large point to point races like Boston and NY. The logistics take much of the fun away for me at least. There are plenty of bigger races where you can still navigate everything easier.
Interesting, I ran my first marathon this year through charity at Boston. And I thought it was amazing the crowds, the energy I’ve run plenty of smaller races and triathlon in the small town field is nice but I thought it was tremendous running at Boston.
I live right outside NYC, I will probably run it next year just because it's there, but it will probably be one and done. It does seem like a pain and we have plenty of good marathons around here with beautiful courses that you can just sign up to and go. Frankly a lot of the people who hyper-focus on the 6 majors to the exclusion of any other races kind of give me the creeps.
It looks like Mary hasn’t stopped smiling since the race! 😁
I would love to do the NYC marathon
I haven't run a marathon yet, but did my first half at Royal Parks in October. I did NYC 2022. Most of my training and racing is alone and races
The walk at the end!!!! Haha so painful, everyone needs to know about the 27th and 28th miles 😮
These tipps are perfect for that 👍
Booking in for 2024. Thankyou for sharing the non-race information. That stuff uses up so much more mental energy than the race day stuff.
Doing the NY marathon is a dream of mine and watching the two of you getting PB’s is a real inspiration. Well done Mary and Ben xx

A New TV show? Fear the running dead😮

@tommy_runz making a cameo at 5:37!
We were actually in the starting corral together too! And fist bumped on the course (but I wasn’t sure if he knew who I was 😂)
Well done! 👍 I have no idea how anyone can run a city marathon with thousands of people, and waiting 3 hours at the start!! 😱 no thanks.
Just listening to your voice is giving me a sore throat. lol
Ben sounds like he's 3 days into a stag do
I live in the trooics of Australia and I don't think 9°c is cold at all.
Thinking and feeling is 2 different things 😉😂
@@ThisMessyHappy I registered go to places for work below zero, nine degrees is a nice morning, it's much easier to warm up than to cool down
Why no begals? I eat a begal and an egg every morning before my runs. Do you have something against begals?
Yes 😂
@ThisMessyHappy could you expand on that? Just a personal preference, or is it something I should avoid as well for some reason.
Paper cups actually aren't so bad. The worst are the plastic ones
If I ever run another marathon I'm wearing ear plugs. All that screaming and noise wears me down faster! :)
You couldn't have asked for time off at work for a few days? Surely they have a 'leave' system in place.
You should sing and record before your normal voice returns!
I love running and your channel but this video just made me realize that I would never want to participate in such a massive event it seems so over commercialized, expensive ,uncomfortable and pointless for non-professional runners
Enter smaller local races. Better chance of an age group podium finish and maybe a chance to make friends.
