Simplest fix on TH-cam. My battery showed 2+ volts after drilling 7/64" holes. Charged for 2+ min. using 2 amp on my 12 volt auto battery charger. then battery showed 14+ volts. Plugged it into Ryobi battery charger and green light came ON!!! Covered holes with black electrical tape. Thanks!

This is fantastic. Over 1K 'Likes' and loads more views says that this battery charger from RYOBI is more the problem than the battery.
I was so dismayed that my 1.5 amp 18 Volt lithium battery was SOL on the charger...
My Makita 18V lithium battery charger gives a dead signal on one of three of my cordless tool batteries. BUT, the battery gives plenty of power to a jig/recipricating saw and circular saw as well, go figure.
With so many peeps going 'off-grid' this is unacceptable in the real world of design, manufacturing, merchandising, reuse, repurpose, recyle v landfill.

I had a Ryobi 18 V battery that sat in my garage for over 18 months that would not take a charge.
The "Fix" was fast...easy & safe.
I used my 12VDC trickle charger ..held the "+" & the "- " cables to the battery posts for slightly over 2 minutes.
I then put the battery into the Ryobi battery charger.
The charger "Testing" cycle ran a little longer than normal then it started the charging cycle !
I did not do any disassembly ...I didn't drill any holes !

Worked! I did not have a trickle charger so I used another good 18v battery. Took about two minutes to take a battery from zero to ten volts at which point the charger recognized the battery again and charged it to 18v. I filled the holes with some hot glue and covered with electrical tape. Thanks!

Just did this today - 4-24-21. Drilled the holes, connected like terminals to a freshly charged battery and held in place for 3 minutes. Connected the"dead" battery to the charger and it fully charged in 30 minutes!!
I saved my son about 40 bucks for a new battery! I put a small piece of duct tape over each of the drilled holes and all is good!!

Thanks a bunch! I was trying a different TH-cam hack to insert then remove, insert & remove to get a wee little charge each time. After an hour for one pack no dice. However, after drilling holes in it, I did find after 20 insertions it bumped up .03 V. So your method is quick and easy. Saved 2 batteries and I used the start option For 30 seconds on my car battery charger instead of charge to get the voltage from three and 4 V up to 14. I think I’ll use black RTV to fill in the holes. And I’ll set a reminder to charge my packs every month or so. Great video and much appreciated!

Good video. I have been fixing many One+ batteries this way. actually I am removing the batteries and not drilling. Sometimes I have a bad cell so I can test down to the cell level that way.
I am tired of having to fix them. My aftermarket 6ah batteries never die like the Ryobi ones do. Must be a BMS logic problem. Each time I jump the battery for about 45 seconds they revive enough to indicate voltage on the pedistal where it indicated 1v or less prior to jumping it. Out of 6 that I have revived one has cel damage and I am going to use the 18650 cells foe another project.
    Thanks for the video.

This does not work if you have a battery that started this issue after heavy use. I have 2 packs that are having issues and the problem is that a pair of the rechargeable cells in the pack have gone out of balance with the rest of the pack. This is likely due to those cells having gone bad; I am testing to see if they can be brought back or if I will have to use some good cells from another bad pack to make one good battery pack.

Ryobi SUCKS! It figures that they would not have the charger recognize a battery that has been sitting around with a low or nonexistent charge, even though the battery is still good! The level to which consumers in the USA (and presumably, other countries too) are being scammed and ripped off, is unethical and mind boggling!

My Ryobi P118 Charger stopped working with no charge lights.
It comes apart easily -- after you buy a T15 security Torx screwdriver. A 1/4" bit is too big to fit the hole in the plastic.
There was a gob of carbonized crude on the circuit board primary side near C29. I just cleaned that up with some 90% isopropyl and a toothbrush and dried it thoroughly with a hair dryer.
After powering up, it worked fine. There is also a fuse soldered in which you can check. Mine was good.
CAUTION: The Primary voltage was 145 volts on my charger so make sure it has been unplugged for 30 minutes to let everything discharge before opening it up.

I thought about doing what is shown in the video, but didn't have a battery charger to give the battery a boost. I decided to buy a new Ryobi battery charger model P117 that charges in a little as 30 minutes. My though was perhaps the new charger is improved with their intelligent circuit board. Stuck the battery in and it charged right up no problem. Not sure why it would not charge in old charger, but glad I did not have to drill holes in my battery.

If you got to do all this it’s still a piece of shit. How about they just make the port to know the difference

Thank you! It worked great! I had an easier time with the car battery charger since I didn't have a powerful enough charger.

Isn't the car battery charger is too powerful for this?

@@Fpom79 I drilled the holes and used the 120 volt battery car charger and it worked! I put drill bits in the teeth of the charger and stuck the drill bits in the wholes. I didn't have any appropriate wires for the task. The drill bits worked.

Anyone have fix for this situation...7v on the external battery pack contacts, 19v across the actual internal batteries. The battery indicator only displays one LED and the charger says it's charged. I'm thinking about draining the batteries below 7V Ihen plug back into the charger to see what indication i get. Then maybe try the jump charge. Maybe the circuit board is bad on this one???

This worked for me. Thank you so much. Mostly I've been a "Yellow" or "Blue" brand guy. Thought I'd try Ryobi starting with the brad nailer and then a hammer drill / driver. I have to say I'm less than impressed. The nail gun has trouble firing, the drill chuck lets go of the bits, and now I have to do this hack for the battery. But you just saved me some $. So thank you again.

The same few companies manufacture all of these. And I don't mean Milwaukee and Ryobi. I mean some shop in China makes multiple "brand" names. It's like Foxcon making Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, etc. computers.

I have no clue why he drilled holes in the battery when he could have just unscrewed the housing and took it apart. Makes zero sense to me
