    The chip went short circuit in my glow plug relay and trashed a set of 1 year old glow plugs last year .

    Is the best way of in-situ not to measure the current to a particulate plug, so disconnect the wire connection to the plug to be tested, connect the meter +ve to the wire connection and meter -ve to plug. The Fuse for the 4 plugs is 30 amps, they are in parallel so max draw should be circa 7 amps so its long as meter cover 10amp current should be OK.

    Mike, it's my understanding that as an 'old hand' you want to see on the bench, how quickly the glow plugs warm up and their intensity, (how bright.)
    It may be a fiddle and a problem to extract these things, but in the end it must remove the guess work because they are working fine, or not. Personally I'd vote for that.👍

      I was going to do this but the timer was shot and I do not have a spare, but I was thinking that taking them out and testing them on the bench is not a bad idea before the cold weather comes - also if you get some thread guard anti seize on them they come out a dream

    DC clamp meter. If your glow plugs are working fine, still measure the current consumption with a clamp meter for future comparison..

    Get a DC ammeter. It makes life so much easier in troubleshooting high current loads like this. For the timer, change the wiring so that the dash light is connected to the power to the plugs. Then you know what is going on.

    I think that’s your meter varying more than anything! Also don’t hold onto both metal probes at the same time. Anything round 1 ohm is ok

    Amp clamp would be my start point once I had confirmed the glowplug module / relay had its appropriate powers, grounds etc. So hard to draw a conclusion from a ohm reading that low as so many things can skew that.

      the reason I did this was because it is so hard to test with an Ohm meter

    Was the military version a better idea? Hold the key as long as you want and no complicated timed relay.

      Problem with that was because the old 2.5's were such bad starters they tended to burn out the plugs as they were kept on too long

      @@BritannicaRestorations My 2.5 Not/ Arsed wasn't the best, 300 I have now seems good, doesn't need glow plugs unless its really cold. Loving the videos, keep up the good work Mike . 👍

    Mike, why don't you measure the current drawn by the GP, that will tell you if they are working without removing them. Just put your meter in series with the power to the plug or use a clamp. PCB looks interesting built-in timer sophisticated for an LR.

    resistance increases with heat. Could you measure it and turn the key and watch it change (or not) to prove they are heating up?

      It is a regular 200/300Tdi timer relay

    Hey, my 200tdi 90 has some smoke after starting up but goes after warm up. Reckon it needs new injector tips ?

      All Tdi's puff smoke on initial start up, but yes, you may be needing the injectors servicing

    Couldn't you test it by testing the amps that it consumes, if it's 0amp then you know it's dead etc.

      If it measures open circuit on Ohms, then it is dud. That is a test that can be done in situ. If you get a very high reading, then they are suspect

    It's not that hard to test in situ. Just undo the yellow wire from of all them. From the +12 of the alternator or from the battery use a wire to touch every one of the plugs in the little threaded part where the original yellow wire goes. If it sparks it's OK, if it doesn't is dead. No need to remove them from the head. Cheers

      Yes that is why I suggest that, as ohm meters and ammeters are too much of a fiddle

    Just wondering i have a 1984 110 with a 200 tdi conversion will I have a realy or do they just come on instantly with the ignition turned on

      Depends if it was a proper conversion - most miss it off

    Best way to test glow plugs is to see if the damn thing starts...

      Nearly every truck that comes here from Europe or Africa has the plugs brunt out - they do not need them, but over many years the glow plugs do come on even for a short spell as the timer is a pre and post relay meaning even when the motor starts the glow plugs are still on a while to reduce smoke.
      Naturally, soon as the hit the first bit of cold here they will not start

      Here in Aus, we simply pull the fuse, or relay, which ever is easier to get at ;)

    How long should the plugs stay on for. I believe they stay on after the light has gone out but only for seconds. My stay on continiously which cant be right?

      Correct - the light goes out, but the plugs still are glowing for a few seconds to clean up emissions.
      Make sure you have the relay wired correctly
