Wow this is gold!! No one ever interviewed Ivey for more than 10min! loll good job on asking him all the questions, usually they are too intimidated or shy to ask the juicy ones haha 🤙
I’ve been in recovery for 13yrs and Definitely what I believe after watching his last three podcast interviews. I was wondering why he never said anything until he said he was going to talk about it in another interview, in this podcast. Anyone who plays poker has at least some slight obsessive compulsive disorder which goes hand in hand with addiction. A lot of people in poker could benefit from his openness about recovery, but then again, it’s his choice. He might not want to put that weight on his shoulders and is understandable also. I was already a huge fan but now I’m an even bigger fan! The recovery family runs deep!
Yeah, he was struggling with alcohol for a while, and had been losing a lot of money because of bad decisions at the time because of it. He started playing really well and started getting good results again not much longer after he cleaned up too. I have no idea if it he needed 12 step or wanted to go to any kind of rehab though. Possible I guess. Glad that Ivey was man enough to talk about his problems. Like he said these issues are all over poker. I mean Stu Ungar, who was a super genius and one of the GOAT poker players was an extremely bad drug addict most of his life, also a very bad gambling addict. Most poker players expected him to die pretty much every year considering how bad his health was and what he was doing to himself. He lived a lot longer than most thought he would though. He overdosed on cocaine in 1990 while having an overwhelming chip lead over 2nd place with 25 players left. and he almost died. It was bad enough to where he never was able to return to the table and he got blinded off into 9th place. Not long after he came back and won the 97 main event after not playing seriously for a long time and being in a drug induced haze. He was absolutely destroying everyone, and watching him and his skills while playing against the others was just unbelievable. He won a million dollars I believe. Not long very long after that, sometime in early to mid 98 he was found dead in a drug infested motel with drugs all over the room. A very very sad ending to one of the GOAT poker players. He was young, and only made it to 45, but considering the drug abuse, most thought he would have died a long time before. Stuey had many sad situations in his life. I have a lot of empathy for many of Stueys choices in life. He had tried to clean up for his family and daughter, but unfortunately drugs would always end up getting the better of him, and he ultimately lost his battle to drugs at 45. Sorry this was so long, but like I said there is a lot of this in poker. Stueys situation is obviously very extreme.
@@EverDayBest I know alcohol specifically messed Ivey up a lot, which is why he stopped drinking. I had heard that many times about Ivey. Matusow talked about Iveys drinking problems and how it ruined his results, but he also said since Ivey stopped alcohol that he started to have great results again. I hadn't heard about drugs with Ivey. Yeah, the emotional stuff with woman and the heavy drinking went hand in hand as they many times do. They both feed off each other in many cases. People will drink because of the emotional stuff with women, and that causes arguments and fights, which then causes more drinking. So they feed off each other. I have seen others with that same problem.

Legendary podcast. Phil is the man. During the last WSOP I was standing in line to turn in my winner slip and seen him sitting in a chair off to the side. The guy in front of me was wearing a suit and told the cashier he was buying Phil into the Players Championship 50k tourney. The guy worked for Caesars and stood in line so Phil didn't have to, lol. Phil had his headphones on and was jus chilling playing an online cash game on his phone. I wanted to go say hi but when I heard he was getting ready to play the 50k Players I knew he was zoning in and prolly didn't wana be bothered. Was so incredible jus to see him irl tho. Thanks for this Podcast Joey and Phil. Was really awesome

Seen a LOT of Phil Ivey interviews over the years.. I don't know if it's just me, but this particular one seems super genuine in comparison to the norm- v open, seemingly honest and tbh kinda vulnerable at times. It's absolutely refreshing and valuable and I just wanna say thank you for making this happen and uploading it for us. I've been playing professionally for some time and it's super useful to hear the input of people like this, and I've no doubt it will be even more valuable for the hundreds of new up and coming players.. good work as the interviewer.. thanks Joey!
The two or three minutes from 32.00 onwards that culminates with Ivey asking “what’s he doing now” and Joey replies, “last I heard he was missing”. This is just comedy gold.
Mad respect to Phil letting others know about giving up alcohol and working on being a better person who wants to serves others. These are recovery concepts and recommend AA to anyone who wants a better happier life.
He doesn’t say it but that’s 100% AA about serving others along with being sober. Do you know if he is sober through AA because it definitely comes across that way.
@@christianburk7309 Well he basically says he had problems with alcohol in his life for sure. Glad he's sober and doing a lot better. He didn't necessarily use AA though. AA has good principals sure, and Ivey could definitely be mentioning those concepts because they help him. I don't think that he means he goes to meetings though. I mean it's possible.
Yeah, a lot of people are afraid or embarrassed to tell others about their struggle and issues with alcohol and or drugs, especially once they have a certain level of fame. Ivey may have left out details of his alcohol problems, but he was honest for the most part, which can potentially help others struggling too, which was a good point by Joey. It also made Ivey take a look at his life and make many positive improvements. Sounds like he's exercising and doing meditation during this time as well, which are two very very healthy and important activities in my opinion. I hope Ivey is still clean, and still focused on these positive life aspects. Keep up the good work Phil, you're a beast.

I have seen others with that same problem.
Love how he still has the aura of Superstar (Superstar in any field, that is rare)
Mesmorizing and leaving you wanting more
This is a great interview. Very happy that this happened. Ty so much to both of you!
JOEY YOU ARE A LEGEND FOR THIS!!! THANK YOU PAPIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!

Papi and The Goat, what a time to be alive 🔥🔥🔥
¨Takes a lot of work to be good at poker, takes a lot of work to be good at life¨ Phil Ivey. This one hit hard! Great interview Joey!

Makes me legitimately so happy that you managed to get Ivey on. Congrats Papi, officially in the big leagues now.
I am happy to see Phil Ivey mature throughout the years and find himself. Its a good lesson to learn.
Eat well, meditation, yoga, and Family values will make you a better person.
"usually it gets taken the wrong way, and who really knows what the hell their talking about anyway." Im dead
Love the nervous start & how well the rest went man, congrats!
Great Interview of the Legend, was nice to see Papi!
"I didn't have their best interests in mind either..." LOL
straight savage
@Nbkk Jgfhk Yes cause non poker players usually have everyone else's best interests at heart, lmao. He's being self aware and honest, unlike most people.
@@RyanSkalsky OFC. Most Politics dont play Poker and they want us all to be happy and rich and have no self interest.
Best Interview ever pokerwise. Hands down for Ivey and Papi for putting this up
Awesome to see Phil open up for an hour!!! The greatest poker player of all time and by far my favorite.
Imagine getting isildur and dwan in same podcast
Excellent interview ! Joey I've been watching you since pretty much day 1 and you always had it, but this interview really shows how much you grew, great flow and conversation throughout, I think you had great chemistry and really brought out the best in each other. GOAT Host + Goat Guest = GTO episode ! Can't wait for the next one !
Ivey has been humbled and you can see it , he has surpassed his cocky days and has really settled into himself now , definitely knows who and what he is ..GOAT
Ivey is overrated. In 2014, Ivey is the second biggest loser in online poker. In 2015, Ivey is the biggest loser in online poker. Nowadays, top poker players run circle on Ivey.
@@michaelss1294 definitely was splashy online , but he’s an all around gambler as we all know now ..he’s a live pro for sure and has been killing it on the circuit also , definitely not overrated , online is a whole world in itself ..1000’s of hours people have and are putting in, with all the solvers , gto etc is not even worth the time for how good everyone has got , plus Ivey had full tilt money back then as well , soo was a different time then and all these kids that were just living in front of there computers were way ahead of long term live pros , but the 2014 online batch is f kids are probably terrible now compared to today’s players online .
@@123-z5o2c , Ivey got destroyed by these young upcoming pro. I am certain jungle man, Stephen Chadwick and many others can beat Ivey. How can a goat get demolish 2 years straight. Ivey is overrated.
@@michaelss1294 when did he get demolished?..you can look at high stakes data base online he was a winning player most the time , also he played at such nosebleed stakes a long time , was able to beat Andy Beal and save the corporation from losing millions , he’s been out in Macau also playing the largest cash games in the world ..i just don’t see your point , like the like of online wizards , limitless , true teller and the milkman ..yes are crushing anybody but geez ..they went next level with GTO , and millions of haves online ..as you may can tell ..I’m a huge poker nerd she can move around thr felt myself
@@123-z5o2c , how can a goat lose 2 year straight. That is not a goat, but mr. overrated. Only idiots call him goat.
Interviewing Ivey had to be a crazy experience, imagine how Nerve Wracking that is
I've pump faked those same toll booths in AC many times in my early gambling days lol
What a tough and personal interview. Thanks for sharing Ivey! GOAT
Great interview Joe. Loved hearing Phil open up a bit about life and his journey.
Phenomenal choice of guest to bring back the interviews, doesn’t get better than Ivey. Loves you on Vibes’ Embrace the Grind podcast as well
Needed to put on glasses and a hoodie…. Felt like Ivey was reading my soul 🤣🤣
very inspirational to hear from someone who devoted their life to one thing. great podcast episode. hope he comes back
Legendary. Much awaited. The GOAT
Jooooooeeeey nice interview. You're doing yourself proud 💪 Ivey is top dog, one of the all time greats
Ivey looks like he’s in good shape ...

Great interview Joey. Takes a good interviewer to get a guest to relax and talk honestly. Phil is a legend. Great watch!
Excited to watch this, LFG!!! Phil has some guns....
Awesome interview! Not even halfway through but this is the most open I’ve ever seen Ivey talk.. good Job Joey!
Great interview. Well done both of you.
Phil’s the man! Nice hearing him open up a little!!
Hellmuth is the man, didn't realize he got a tan, shaved, and got younger.
Ivey is GOAT got me inspired to play poker since a young age
Meditation & Yoga huh?! I approve! Super wholesome. (: Bless you Phil!
"16 million... but you already knew that"

16 or 60 ? If was 16 is 1.6 buy ins . Not “great”
Legendary podcast ! Thanks Joey for managing to get the Goat on here ! 2021 is going to be a great year.
Joey, I think we should get this man Knighted. Sir Phil Ivey.
Phil you are loved! From Portugal! Best of luck!
The two or three minutes from 32.00 onwards that culminates with Ivey asking “what’s he doing now” and Joey replies, “last I heard he was missing”. This is just comedy gold.
This interview made me smile. Thanks Joey and Phil
I always liked Phil Ivey while watching him on television. This podcast confirms hes cool af. He's not arrogant from the money and knows he still needs to put in the work to grow in life and be happy. Mad respect
Phil Ivey is the Goat. Waiting for him to play Hellmuth H.U. in the Poker Go studios
Are they going to?
If the money was big enough Ivey said he would play and if PH keeps winning I can't see why not. That's the REAL H.U. Challenge.
@@keithcosentino thT would be awesome, I was thinking Dawgs vs Ivey because u love their battle on Shark Cage but PH been owning everybody glad to see him winning because youtube only shows him losing lol
Best poker/life interview ever ...
Great interview! Ivey seems like he's at a great place in his life right now. Y'all dropped all kinds of gems in this one.
Congrats Papi this is awesome!
Joey is so damn good at this! This felt so natural, like I was just a fly on the wall listening to them two talk.
Joey this was GOLD. Big props on this accomplishment to sit down and chop it up with our HERO! Keep up the great work.

What a great interview with the legend himself. Letting him talk, bringing up a lot of good questions and basically giving a whole advice on life. Perfect!
