@Nbkk Jgfhk Being staked also can mean one is putting a limit on ones losses, by sharing the full cost of a buy in. Some winning players are happy to be staked, so being staked does not automatically mean one is losing.

@Nbkk Jgfhk ivey is a legend. You dont think he can get a stake for any game in the world with his skills and fame? Some rich whale would stake for millions just to be his friend. I mean JRB can get staked. Berkley has a $20 million backing deal. You dont think ivey could get backing deal for $10 million+ from a billionaire who is a fan of poker. He is one of the best poker players ever. Of course he can. Who cares if he is broke. He chooses to play less poker. He could play the highest stakesevery day if he wanted to.

Alexander Tronstad I think Joey was intimidated and Phil isn’t super talkative. They never really got into the relax conversation the way Joey usually does. It seemed like he was walking a glass a bit. People talk more when they are nervous. Early on both Joey and Phil are doing self soothing behaviors. I wish the interview was longer, but I’m sure it was agreed on only an hour or so. I wish they talked more about playing over your head and being a bad spot financially, I think it would have huge impact on some people who need to hear it. I wonder if Phil had a list of off topic subjects, honestly and Joey was navigating around them

@@amazingabby25 Definitely. I have been on public videos too, and nerves definitely throws you off your personality. And also being around people you really really respect it is strange, how you really want to talk to them more than anything but freeze up. I had this author I love come to a local event I was part of arranging and once he came in the door and just sat down in front of me, and we had a minute face to face I just stared down in the table. Too mindblowing.. It got better, but that's strange how that works. Joey was probably battling through this one the best he could!

I’ve been in recovery for 13yrs and Definitely what I believe after watching his last three podcast interviews. I was wondering why he never said anything until he said he was going to talk about it in another interview, in this podcast. Anyone who plays poker has at least some slight obsessive compulsive disorder which goes hand in hand with addiction. A lot of people in poker could benefit from his openness about recovery, but then again, it’s his choice. He might not want to put that weight on his shoulders and is understandable also. I was already a huge fan but now I’m an even bigger fan! The recovery family runs deep!

Yeah, he was struggling with alcohol for a while, and had been losing a lot of money because of bad decisions at the time because of it. He started playing really well and started getting good results again not much longer after he cleaned up too. I have no idea if it he needed 12 step or wanted to go to any kind of rehab though. Possible I guess. Glad that Ivey was man enough to talk about his problems. Like he said these issues are all over poker. I mean Stu Ungar, who was a super genius and one of the GOAT poker players was an extremely bad drug addict most of his life, also a very bad gambling addict. Most poker players expected him to die pretty much every year considering how bad his health was and what he was doing to himself. He lived a lot longer than most thought he would though. He overdosed on cocaine in 1990 while having an overwhelming chip lead over 2nd place with 25 players left. and he almost died. It was bad enough to where he never was able to return to the table and he got blinded off into 9th place. Not long after he came back and won the 97 main event after not playing seriously for a long time and being in a drug induced haze. He was absolutely destroying everyone, and watching him and his skills while playing against the others was just unbelievable. He won a million dollars I believe. Not long very long after that, sometime in early to mid 98 he was found dead in a drug infested motel with drugs all over the room. A very very sad ending to one of the GOAT poker players. He was young, and only made it to 45, but considering the drug abuse, most thought he would have died a long time before. Stuey had many sad situations in his life. I have a lot of empathy for many of Stueys choices in life. He had tried to clean up for his family and daughter, but unfortunately drugs would always end up getting the better of him, and he ultimately lost his battle to drugs at 45. Sorry this was so long, but like I said there is a lot of this in poker. Stueys situation is obviously very extreme.

@@EverDayBest I know alcohol specifically messed Ivey up a lot, which is why he stopped drinking. I had heard that many times about Ivey. Matusow talked about Iveys drinking problems and how it ruined his results, but he also said since Ivey stopped alcohol that he started to have great results again. I hadn't heard about drugs with Ivey. Yeah, the emotional stuff with woman and the heavy drinking went hand in hand as they many times do. They both feed off each other in many cases. People will drink because of the emotional stuff with women, and that causes arguments and fights, which then causes more drinking. So they feed off each other. I have seen others with that same problem.

Phil Ivey came to craps table at Bellagio and threw down 400k on line and come bets with max odds on my roll (same way i bet). I crapped out, and he just left without saying a word to anyone. I didn't have the balls to ask him for an autograph or photo after crapping out obviously. When he came to table we just gave each other a brief poker stare, i let him cash in his 400k marker tokens and bet and i rolled the dice. He didn't say anything. Just in and out bet 400k on one roll then left. I still owe him an apology for that. Sorry phil. Don't worry the next night he was at table with brother and friends who were hooting and hollaring and he won it all back i am sure. Phil is PURE GAMBLER like stu ungar. He and stuey are my top most respected players because they are talented gamblers not just poker players, but they play all the games and play them all at the highest stakes. Kind of like me although I don't bet nearly as big as phil since I don't have millions of dollars but i do degen it up in every form of gambling and always respected the poker players who had a lot of gamble in themselves. Phil is a pure gambler. He is almost as big of a degen as Stuey. I don't know if he played the ponies like stuey did though, but phil gambles on everything else. Much respect.

Yeah, a lot of people are afraid or embarrassed to tell others about their struggle and issues with alcohol and or drugs, especially once they have a certain level of fame. Ivey may have left out details of his alcohol problems, but he was honest for the most part, which can potentially help others struggling too, which was a good point by Joey. It also made Ivey take a look at his life and make many positive improvements. Sounds like he's exercising and doing meditation during this time as well, which are two very very healthy and important activities in my opinion. I hope Ivey is still clean, and still focused on these positive life aspects. Keep up the good work Phil, you're a beast.

How does Phil Ivey feel about the current poker vloger world vs when everything was just on TV before? how does he see himself now from when ESPN did the 30 for 30 segment on him? After taking a long break from poker what stakes does he see himself playing when he wants to return to the game? Very important questions you missed aside from the first 28 minute therapy session. He was obviously not willing to talk about his "party life" and such but then again phil has never been the type to promote himself as an addict other then the gamble. Great to see him speak and make all his followers happy.
