    Anyone else imagining that shirt going all the way to the ground?
    I bought a 2015 Leaf (24Kwh) last September for €12K. The savings on diesel covered about 60% of the loan repayments. 4 year loan term, so after 5-6 years it has paid for itself completely.

      Similar position here, 2nd hand Leaf for the price of a Golf; and add to the savings - no road tax, hardly any maintenance. With battery price dropping 15% year-on-year I figure by the time the pack is worn @2025, getting a long range replacement will give a further 10 years of cheap, reliable motoring.

    I was looking at electric cars for sale on UK AutoTrader the other day, when it occured to me that I could buy a 3 or 4 year old Nissan Leaf for around £5,000 and upgrade the battery and software for around another £3,000. This would basically give me a new car with modern tech and much longer range and power.
    Robert, maybe you could do something like this as a Live Project on the show?
    Not all of us out here in Ordinaryville Land can afford to spend upwards of £25,000+ on a brand spanking new car. When electric vehicles cost less than 10K for something decent, there will be a much greater take up of them. Keep up the good work Fully Charged......

      @fluxfluxredux 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you can find a 4yr old Nissan leaf for £5k which wasnt a million mile taxi then snap it up! Cheapest on Autotrader is £9k. You can get a 2011 for £5k so for £8k you'd have a nearly decade old car with all its associated problems.

      In total, I've done a bit over 8000 miles since I bought it, and the best range I've had is over 200 miles in the summer, and about 135 miles in the winter. All depends on how fast I go and the types of road I'm driving on. It doesn't fare all that well on motorways.

    • @4nz-nl
      @4nz-nl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Theodossis Theodossiou Recycling batteries would be a bit stupid. There are multiple companies working on techniques to refurbish LiPo batteries chemically, in the meanwhile it's best to use old lower-capacity batteries as buffers for electric overcapacity (from renewable energy sources). Also, a well treated modern battery can last a good lot longer than 6 years. I'm still running rechargeable NiMH batteries in my flash and LiPO in my cameras, a few of those are over 12 years old. They're still fine, although a bit less powerful than in the beginning.

    • @4nz-nl
      @4nz-nl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually, the best way to get rid of petrol and diesel is to stop driving cars at all. It's not because no smoke comes out the back that an electric car has no emissions. Even if you would put no engine in it at all, a car is already bad for the environment. Think about why you'd want to move anywhere between 1 and 2 metric tonnes of steel for transporting 1 person in most cases. I live in a busy metropolitan area, and have started cycling all trips up to about 35 miles, if I have to go there alone. What's most confronting is that with a fast human powered bicycle, the travel time doesn't even change. I understand not everybody wants to sport like I do, but electric bikes exist. Some people need to travel further; for this I still have a petrol car. Last time I drove it was May 28th, over a week ago.
      My car is tiny, but still weighs over 900 kg. Even an electric bike is less than your bodyweight, and could do 50 mph with less power than a kilowatt.
      We need to start changing the rules of the game.

    Great video, very informative.
    After considering all available options and doing thorough research over 14 months, the best option for me was (without a doubt) the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
    My previous car was a 2008 Prius T-Spirit which I had for 10 years.
    I live in central London and my commute is 7 miles each way. I can do the commute easily on One charge without using petrol - even 2 days is very doable on one charge. I charge at home at night when it's cheaper.
    No congestion charge, Zero road tax, low insurance (cheaper than the Prius) and best of all I can do long trips to see family, without any range anxiety, 45MPG on the motorway is _pretty_ good! Also I can charge using a fast charger in loads of places.

    • @bujin1977
      @bujin1977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kooooons The old car isn't going to be scrapped. It allows for someone else to get into the EV world without having to buy a brand new car.
      My decision to upgrade to the newest one was based on a few things. Firstly, I didn't want to hang on to a car with a battery lease as I have a feeling they may be difficult to sell in the future. Secondly, my working situation changed which meant that I would be going over my agreed mileage, and this gave me an easy opportunity to change that. Thirdly, while I've definitely enjoyed driving the ZE40, mine is only capable of 22kW charging speeds. Its summer 200+ mile range has been great, but I've still felt a little bit limited. Adding another possible 50 miles and 50kW rapid charging will open up my ability to go on longer trips.
      It's possible (maybe even probable) that I might change it again once the PCP on this one comes to an end, because the final payment is pretty expensive. It will depend on how I feel in 3 or 4 years time.

    All good stuff from the Bobby Llew public information service. Just need to be a bit realistic on the difference between quoted maximum and in practice DC charging rates. My e-Niro is rated at 100 kW and in 14 months I’ve only ever used 50 kW chargers on long runs. Best I’ve ever seen is 44 kW charging speed in the summer, in winter it drops a bit. I did use an Ionity charger in December last year which was my chance to see it what it could do at its highest rated capacity. Result was 54 kW top, though it was cold. Other e-Niro owners in the UK (I’m in France) have said their maximum was 77 kW in summer..I’ve never found it a problem though as with the range of cars like the e-NIro, Zoe 50 and the e-208 the range of the car is longer than I can drive before needing a break.

Once you start heading below 20°c the dissipation of the cell charge drops and if the cell is faulty ,it will drop dramatically.

    What seems like aeons ago, you did a show featuring a static storage liquid-flow battery system in Australia, but never did a follow-up.
    Since then, all the talk about static storage has been Tesla Powerwall. Which has always seemed kind of _off_ to me, using a brand-new vehicle-grade lithium ion battery system for static storage. It just seems like a mismatch between tool and job. At the very least, it would seem to make more sense to repurpose retired vehicle batteries, which aren't quite good enough for the automotive purpose but have plenty of life left in them to serve for static storage - and put all the brand-new batteries into vehicles to get all of that usefulness out of them first.
    But since the job of static storage is so completely different to the job of moving vehicles around at high rates of speed and acceleration, it seems to me that an entirely different tool - such as liquid flow - might be better suited to do that job.
    I'd like to get some updated information about how various flow technologies are doing. (There's a company making liquid flow batteries in Hayward, CA, right next door to world-famous Fremont, that you might have a look at.)

    • @MrGonzonator
      @MrGonzonator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe they are about twice the price of lithium ion and take up more space. They're concentrating on niche applications where long life and long stand down times are required such as backup power for communication towers, water pumps that kind of thing.

      The company is called RedFlow BTW.

    • @dwc1964
      @dwc1964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrGonzonator taking up more space isn't really that big a problem with static storage - that's part of what I meant about the right tool for the right job. As for "twice the price" that's where the longer life, and the absence of all the issues that lithium ion batteries have with dendrites and what-not, factor in - presumably the price you're referring to is per unit of energy storage, but that's not necessarily the most important number. And all the things that make them useful for the "niche" applications you list ought to make them useful for microgrid service, such as powering an apartment building (with multiple units and cars in the garage) or perhaps a city block, I would think.

    Robert, it is going to be interesting to see what effect the THING has on new EV car sales ! I am sure many have been saving up to buy one and now, due to the lockdown, many will have had to eat into those savings and therefore not be able to purchase a new car at the moment. What I find very strange is some manufacturers would sooner hand over large amounts of cash to Tesla, than discount their cars in order to meet the emissions requirement set by the EU. Something else to take into account is how much the manufacturers are going to discount all the ICE vehicles, just to get rid of them and also considering how cheap fuel is at the moment !

Would love to get a used Zoe as my next car, but the fact that a lot of the used ones are on battery lease is a real deal-breaker. 24kw/h Leafs are a bit limited on range and the earlier (more affordable!) ones had the iffy battery chemistry. Miev/Ion/C-Zero are lovely cars (I had one, and absolutely loved it) but again, low range, though super practical and bulletproof mechanics. Golf GTE maybe?

I calculated my costs if I buy a new 2020 Hyundai Kona electric 64 KWh Premium+, my costs dropped to less than $800/month and when I receive the government EV bonus of about $6000 after 6 months of ownership and pay it directly to the bank to reduce loan amount, costs will drop to around $700/month, that includes the loan, insurance and charging costs. The car costs less to change tires, less to change brake pads and it just makes sense, so I guess I am buying one...

It's maybe a little behind on range, but otherwise it's very affordable and extremely practical for a family car, including a trailer hitch which is still very rare on EV's. Plus it's got solar cells integrated in the body. Personally I need a longer range for the frequent weekend trips to the holiday house, but otherwise I would have ordered one already... The ones available are the ones that are mid size or larger and all of them cost $50+K if you get them as you want them. I believe the Leaf and the Chevy Bolt are available here... but neither one of those attract my attention sadly. I know manufacturers look at the US as a cash cow where everyone can spend lots of money if they want to... but some of us are just looking for a secondary car for short trips around town, no more than 50 miles per day if that much. I have two other cars that would do fine traveling across the State (very large) or even across country (even larger).
