Please keep doing server related videos. There's not enough homelab content on TH-cam and they've always been some of my favorite videos produced by LTT, Level1Techs, Craft Computing, etc, but not enough of it!
I love those videos. I've been working with desktop for over 20 years now and i never had the opportunity to thinker with servers and enterprise stuff. I really enjoy learning new stuff, especially through your always entertaining videos!
I definitely dig these kind of videos (I sub to Level1's channels). I appreciate being able to have a diverse opinion pool to draw from, so appreciate other creators who sprinkle more of the technical aspects in.
Love it Nick, I set up my own Unraid server from an old PC from my employer, yeah its only got 8 gig ram and a dual core but for a home server it works well, the steep learning part was trying to figure out how to set up Unraid and get it working, and also how to setup plex to run in it too.
I haven't had a fiddle with esxi since early 2000 when I was studying network security. Amusing that most of the teaching material then was all focused on running on a standalone dedicated server. Most people now days will tell you to use unraid or something similar but personally I'm big fan of esxi. The interface was extremely intuitive even when I was a noob with virtualiztion and just runs. Can totally see why you use it.
Hey Nick / Klaire 🥰✊👍. I love these types of videos even thou I don’t use corporate/ enterprise server stuff myself. Virtual machines are being used more so by many home users, especially with the bombardment of spyware / malware / ransomware etc rendering home PCs corrupted or unusable. As well as for software testing environments etc 🤩🤯. Keep up the great content such as this please.
I'm EXTREMELY interested in server stuff. I'd love more of these videos and I'd especially love to see more about the software side of things, virtualization is underrated imho! With even consumer CPUs having lots of cores and motherboards supporting lots of RAM, virtualization is becoming a viable workflow for everyone, not just big servers
Great thing with virtually machines is the snapshot feature and easy o.s deployment. Alot can also be said for running things in it's own container and resource allocation to maximise the hardware.
I got an Epyc CPU + motherboard for similar reasons. Upgrading a couple old Xeon machines and migrating from truenas core to scale. Consolidating 2 systems to 1 having and 5 PCI-E 4.0 x16 and 128gb of memory in that one is going to be nice when it's finally all up and running.
What's the going price when using a setup you and Gear Seekers are using? I run numerical weather prediction models at home and this the Epyc might be something I should look into.
Yeah alot of addition content and how to's here running truenas, plex/emby, pihole etc etc. Honestly for the enthusiast gamer it's the next step. Previously my old gaming p.c would an upgrade to my home server. Now I just built a new one this time around 😆
So you changed the hardware you wanted to originally use and I approve. I wanted to see a e-atx board in the case anyways. In the future even if you change the guts inside the chassis just continue the video, I view this channel as a chassis channel anyways.
Mate I'm running 2x r720 and 1x r730, and a 4x rack mounted Pi cluster and you ask " do you like these videos" (and more kit for consumer and games but a while ago it became necessary to use real-enterprise-even-if-old for some stuff) . Yes. Yes I do - and tbh whatever algo youtube is using - these types (I'm including your Rpi and Ansible vids as well) seem to be what YT suggests to me (not complaining)
Just starting my Networking Journey and taking the Harvard cs50 via edX for free..... That ESX... looks like a good interface to start with.... Basic GUI, One Stop Shop.
Do you have a breakdown of all of the components you’ve used here? I’m extremely new to servers, and I’ve been looking for a chassis that makes sense, but can’t find anything with 12 drives available for lower than $800. And it seems like you added the drive modules after? I’m not quite sure how I should be looking for the chassis and modules that would be cost effective and not break my wallet. Hot swap would be preferred, but I’ll settle for anything to help with figuring out how to get started.
Hey! I've been watching your videos and the quality of the videos and content are superb! Just a quick question though, on your Phatenks P360A build. Can you fit the vertical mounted gpu and an air cooler like noctua nh-d15 or Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro?
Have you ever thought about using EPYC? Since you only need the lanes, the 16 cores EPYC plus the motherboard is relatively cheap, especially if you just sell that TR and mobo combo.
I ran ESXi for a long time, however with the free version you can't make full vm backups with for instance Veeam. Also the PowerShell CLI functionality is super limited...
excuse me i know this video is old but is that a full atx psu ? i been looking for a pc case like this that i can mount under my desk look clean instead of using a big tower that goes under the side . i been wanting too but this but i wonder if a gigabite gtx 1080ti can fit in this case as well ?i just shock how huge that gpu is is that a atx mother board i use a atx board ?
Just a question do you feel the need for ECC ram? I'm trying use my old 5800x as Small business server for our company as a developing/test server with a few Virtual machines running. It will be running 24/7
You said you've made an internal network for the VM's to communicate directly to eachother without going on the network. But doesn't VMware do this automatically? The virtual switch on the hypervisor should know the machine you're trying to reach is on the same host. Speed wise it shouldn't matter.
@@GearSeekers My guess is he must have been an older esxi adopter. If my memory serves me right early days esxi had a fairly strict hardware compatibility list. Deviating from that list would introduce some weird problems. Alot of amd products then where not recommended by the hcl. I'm sure much has changed and these kinds of vids make me want to have a fiddle with esxi at home again.

I think the time has come to start tinkering :D
I vastly prefer it. Started by installing esxi on an old laptop. Ran like shit, but it was fun!
BEEN contemplating setting up a home server....too ill-equipped to do it right now. Granted I have tons of hardware to use for it.
I definitely dig these kind of videos (I sub to Level1's channels). I appreciate being able to have a diverse opinion pool to draw from, so appreciate other creators who sprinkle more of the technical aspects in.
Wendell is such a legend!
Thank you Nic and Claire.
Thanks for watching :)
💜💜
Please keep showing these kinds of videos. I really like seeing how others are using their home server setups.
Excellent video. Hope it _serves_ you well. Okay I'm out, too early for a dad joke.
Yes! More content like this! I'd love to hear a deep drive on why you didn't go into proxmox and others.
Over my head, would watch again.
Roll it again!
Bnager of a video fam, love ESXi as well. Love seeing this content. Keep up the hard work
Great video man. You've inspired me to do my own little project and learn about home networking on my own. Keep the videos up!

This is cool, it is nice to see "Outside" of the normal Home and Gaming content.
Late to the party, appreciate the time invested. New sub, and fellow home lab/ enterprise hoarder.
Love your videos! Keep up the great work and dedication to your channel. Loyal fan here.
Thanks mate!
Nice! Definitely need more server content, not enough online. Cheers Mate :)
More Server and HomeLab videos!

Unraid is such a bad product. You would never find it running anywhere near a datacentre.

I spoke a bit about OVA/OVF templates but I cut that part out. I didn't want to get too technical in this video.
thanks
Yes more content like this Love the virtualization stuff
Love this video. Would love to see more like it.
I think I have to now :)
Love the content. I am planning on putting together a home network server with some older hardware. Keep it up
I love it these videos! As a network engineer myself I do like to see your home network setup.

Yeah that was my idea as well. We had 2 servers doing things and all I ever wanted was one box that does it all.
What's the going price when using a setup you and Gear Seekers are using? I run numerical weather prediction models at home and this the Epyc might be something I should look into.
On the 2nd hand market probably be Able to get a decent motherboard, CPU and ram combo for about $2-3k
Love this type of content. Hope to see more of this content.
Please, please more content like this. Maybe do videos on how to run a Linux GUI from a web browser using VNC, XPRA X server and Docker containers.
That's a good idea!

And I thought my file/media server with a 3900X was overkill. Granted, I've started doing encodes on the server just to justify its existence.
Hahahaha! The hardware will change a little bit more too lol.
Still love this kind of stuff

great video love this sort of stuff

Great video, considering this case and wanted to ask just how many 2.5" SSD's can be installed ? Cheers
Bro !! I need help getting my head around Truenas Scale ! Any videos on server related stuff would be much appreciated 👍
I can do an easy setup guide for truenas scale
@@GearSeekers That would be great Nick 👍 can you include some info on data sets for media streaming please mate ?

Awesome build music!
You should invest in a real server rack my brother, even better build yourself a proper one :)
Have a great week ahead and keep it up the great job
We don't have space for it. We have a network rack for all our switching gear but there isn't anywhere else to put stuff
Try the new Arctic P12 Max fans. They seem to be the best budget cooling fans and best value.
Great video, thanks.
Love homelab videos..
I love making them :)
Non ecc memory will running trueNAS well ? Got plenty of old spare hardware and want to try after watch this video :)
Never had any issues running TrueNAS without ECC

is amd officialy supported for esxi ? Or you do some workround ?
Yes of course. You don't need a work around. Not sure why you'd think it wouldn't be officially supported.

I used to deploy opteron servers in the mid 2000s with ESX and it was fine
What case is the DIY disk shelf?
The model number is in the sticker visible. It's the Silverstone RM316 but it's out of production.
What can ESXi do that proxmox can't?
The same core function with worse performance

Ī'm thinking of building my NAS with ASUS Pro Q670M-C-CSM with an i5 12500 and 32GB x2 DDR5 4800 crucial.
Unraid time
Disgusting. Unraid is terrible. I would never recommend such a bad product to anyone.
@@GearSeekers wait wait, this is bold claim. Why Unraid is terrible? Just curious as I am running for couple years
@@GearSeekers please elaborate, or a video would be fine (more content)
can you make a vid showing how you do the lighting for your recording studio?
It changes constantly so probably wouldn't make much sense 🤣
I do IT Helpdesk. I definitely enjoyed this video.
Glad you enjoyed!
