- Martin Rushent, interviewed by Jaye Muller in 2007.
Martin was an amazing force in the world of music production. He worked with many ourtstanding artists such as Shirley Bassey, The Buzzcocks, T-Rex, Fleetwood Mac, The Stranglers, The Human League, Hazel O'Connor, Andrew Loyd Webber and many others. Martin Passed away last month (June 2011) at the age of 62.
The man was a genius. The production on Human league's Love and dancing, was phenomenal
A masterpiece!
Agreed..................................................
Martin had a label based above The Blitz Club, I used to run up there to see Andrew Lauder who was never interested in electronic music but he did give me a 13 floor elevators album. Martin had an assistant Annie Roseberry she was always very interested and followed through all the info I was feeding her about Visage .We had recorded in EMI The Dancer and in the Year 2525 in between all the other bands we were in Annie got us into the Garage set up in Genetic and Martin would sit in the sessions and see Billy Currie Midge Ure and Me with electronic drum machines Triggers SDS Simmons then the Magazine boys joined for the rest of the album. Martin picked up everything we were doing with avid enthusiasm unfortunately after our debut single on Genetic the label was dropped but he still let us finish the recording of the album. We then mixed it at Mayfair studios got a deal a year later and Fade to Grey changed everything .If Annie and Martin had not taken that chance who knows Fade to Grey may never have happened. RIP You wonderful man
I thought you were just a DJ. How did you gain credits on Fade to Grey??
This man's creativity and talent is underrated and way ahead of his time, rest in peace Mr. Rushent
I knew him personally he lived near me in my village !
He also produced Homosapien by Pete Shelly after he left the Buzzcocks, great song. Also Visage recorded their first songs in his out house at his home in reading.
Then had great sucess with the Human League's album Dare.
He was brilliant! I chatted to him a few times on Myspace about music at around the time Itchy Hips was on there and he always had time to talk and give people his time.
Great guy and producer/engineer. I love the Dare Album. R.I.P Martin.
Indeed I also had a couple of chats on MySpace with Martin, very nice guy. R.I.P.
Not only was Martin a great producer, he shaped the whole 80s synth explosion. Not that the synth 80s thing was his only thing, I mean, check out all what he's done. A legend ......... As for the 80s U.K. synth thing he invented, Dreams and Sound, come on! And I'm a Joy Division fan. He's one of the few reasons in life that makes me proud to be involved in music and a MASSIVE influence. Dave x
I remember watching an interview with him some years ago where he was talking about working with Human League. He was saying that it was a few years after "Dare" and they were trying to make a follow up album, but couldn't quite make it work for some reason. He was making suggestions and apparently, either Joanne or Susanne (possibly both) snapped at him and said something like "Well what do you know, you're old?!" I can't remember the exact details, but that was the point of it. In the interview, it was clear that Rushent was obviously rather taken aback and possibly hurt, especially because it was him who had made the Dare album so good in the first place. I don't think he worked with them again after that.
Yes that happened i remember reading about it.
That's a shame
It was Suzanne apparently
thank you for some great music
Genio en los sintetizadores.
Producer/and or Engineer of Generation X, 999, Buzzcocks, Human Legue, Shirley Bassey, T-Rex Yes Go Gos,,, What a talent
He produced some great bands and great records to be sure. I've probably got at least a dozen records by artists he worked with.
I am so sorry that "Love & Dancing" MKII wasn't ever released.
That's quite a CV just in the first minute!
The problem now is we have all the technology behind the glass but precious little talent in front of the glass.
I don't think I can stand another 30 more years of EDM and rapping, however it's repackaged.
The Stranglers was his first Punk production I believe.
He did a great job on rattus norvegicus.
Surely if he's worked with big chair, t-rex, osabisa, then I take it he worked with Tony Visconti. As he worked with those bands as well
Not the first time I heard him slagging off Jean jacque Burnel they must of had some beaf I recon .
