While people have been sending messages back and forth to arrange marriages sight-unseen throughout history, the slightly more modern concept of mail-order brides is generally considered to have originated during the days of the American Frontier- a region that, for a time, was decidedly lacking in members of the female persuasion. At the same time, the east coast of the U.S. had something of a surplus of single ladies, especially following the Civil War.

@@TruckingTendencies True, but no foul play. My uncle was a half-blind drunk idiot, but she really did run away on her own. He was in the Air Force and in Germany in 68/69, but was obsessed with all things Vietnam. Tried to convince people he was a Vietnam Vet even though Germany was the closest he ever got. The lady just took off after less than 2 weeks. Guess she was using the program as a cheap way to get herself to the US.
But #2 was awesome & she stayed with him until he died. She's still in contact with my parents.

My grandfather came to the US in 1911 from Italy. About 5 years later he sent a letter to the mayor of his town asking if any single girl would like to come to America. The mayor asked around and sent him 3 names. He recognized my grandmother's name and told the mayor to "ship her over" .My grandmother came to NY with her uncle and for 6 months they courted. After they were married, had 9 children and were married for 65 years until my Grandfather died.

One of my great-grandmothers was a mail order bride. My great grandfather in Montana arranged for her to come from the east coast. She arrived in town on a train in mid-day. When they met at the station, he said "if you don't like me I'll pay for your ticket home." She said, "I came all the way out here, we might as well get married." They went to the courthouse and got married, and he went back to work in the afternoon. They stayed together for the rest of his life.

Thats epic. Shows just how different things were before mass media entertainment notions of romance spoiled the marriage game. Back in the day, people understood that marriage was more of a financial arrangement than a perpetual honeymoon for lovers. The woman got someone to support her and give her children after she got too old to stay in her parents house, and the man got children to continue his family name (which was important to people of that time) as well as someone to care for the family and home while he was away earning a living. As long as they didnt completely hate each other, or there was no abuse involved, it was a perfectly normal arrangement.

The problem today is all the scams.....while there are a few companies who truly want to create a happy couple, the vast majority are only out to fleece the guy for every penny before he wizened up. I've seen many exposes on these companies and they have a team of writers, buy photos, and post numerous fake profiles. Luring men in with promises of a hot euro wife.
The only real way to do it is to simply travel to the Ukraine etc and meet the old fashioned way. Only there, the fact that you're north american, makes you infinitely more attractive. I have heard that Poland is the same way. Literally 10 attractive women for each man and the men are arrogant buffoons. The real problem is even an average man is looked over by even those desperate to leave or relocate.

I worked with an East Indian family who had a construction company (among others). The grandparents were arranged and they'd been together for 60 years. The eldest son had a russian wife and I swear she was a mail order bride. They asked me to go over to their place and set up a massive new tv for them. Grandpa sat on the couch to see about positioning and grandma came in from the kitchen, sat right down next to him, took his hand in hers and rested her head on his shoulder. It was so sweet.
They had an incredibly attractive daughter. I'm talking runway model beautiful. I'm talking causing traffic accident beautiful. I heard a rumor that she was quite the B*tch. The eldest son let it on to me that the family had sent her back to India for an arranged marriage and a month after the wedding, he sent her home because of her demeanor. I ended up having a few run ins with her myself and she was the literally the WORST person (male or female) I'd ever had to deal with and I've dealt with some real winners.
One day we were standing outside their building talking about a project and the sister walks up. The eldest nods his head to her a couple of times to signal "hey hey, you, her, what about it"? lol I shook my head vigorously NOOOOOOO he rolled his eyes. When she left he said "No"? I said "not only no, but NOT ON YOUR LIFE no" lol He said "this is driving my parents nuts...they so want her married off but they can't even offer $100,000.00 to a guy to do it......hint hint hint" I said "make it $1,000,000.00" he just shook his head and walked away lol.....

And whenever I mention I'm not feeling great or I have some problem, many people automatically ask if my husband is being good to me, like they always assume the worst about him. But all of the German/foreign couples I've met so far are stable, normal couples. One of them met through one of those latina brides websites. I guess it's the bad apples that get the most publicity, but not the majority. That doesn't mean the horror stories I've heard aren't real, so girls please make sure you know someone before moving to another country to be with them, and make sure you always have a way out should anything happen.

My dad nearly did it, but not because he was rich or super traditional. He was in his early 60s and had no plans of ever dating again. He had a friend who immigrated and found out the man had a 30 year old female cousin who was trying to immigrate from Mexico. Dad offered to marry her and let her live in his spare bedroom if she kept the house clean (he had a bad back) and was willing to cook Mexican food a few times a month (one of his favorites). She could go out, get a job, date, and do as she pleased otherwise as long as she didn't bring a man back there (or was gay). He ended up changing his mind before anything concrete happened because he decided it was weird AND because she was overweight.
I never said my dad was a good man. He is a sexist racist islamaphobic homophobic transphobic (unless they were transmen because THAT makes sense) close-minded verbally-abusive violent bigot with over two dozen various guns, 3 bows, and a crossbow, none of which are kept in a safe and some of which have been pointed at people! Never been to jail. Grows a massive garden every year to donate the food. His community loves him.
People are complex, but most like to put others in a box of either good or bad even though people don't work that way.

Very late but same with my aunt too, she's a filipina maid order bride and her husband ordered her from Korea, luckily he wasn't abusive or anything like that, he's actually a great guy (I lived with them for a month). From what she said, it was a lineup of women and basically the agency is gonna take pictures of them and the men gets to pick who they want. She found success in Korea but found out she had stage 3 breast cancer a few years ago now, she went back to the Philippines with her kids to live there for good (she wants to rest peacefully there.)

Knew a man who had a mail order bride. He was wheelchair bound, in his late 60’s, and needed a live in nurse. His family wanted him to also have companionship and took a very different path to get it. She was from the Philippines and trained as a nurse (her training would not be recognized in Canada) and she was a lovely woman. From what I saw she seemed quite happy and she was well aware what she was getting into -she was even sent all his medical records etc before they decided to marry. He died about seven years after they married and she inherited all him assets -which were extensive- and still seen as family by everyone.

In 2003/2004 I dated and then married a Russian woman I met on a Russian Dating site. This is today's version of "mail order brides". To answer the question posed in the title of this video (as far as U.S. rules are concerned), no, you can't just order one and then marry them. About the only step that gets accelerated from a "regular" immigration process is that a "Fiance Visa" can be issued that bypasses the normal lottery process other immigrants have to go through. The fiance still has to be screened by the U.S. Consulate in her home country prior to being approved for a visa and, once in the United States, the couple MUST be married within 90 days of entry. Even though accelerated, the process for visa approval can still take a year from the time the U.S. citizen initially applies. The U.S. citizen can expect to pay upwards of $1,500 in fees for the visa and other paperwork required to convert a foreign national into a naturalized U.S. citizen. Once married, then prepare for about another year of paperwork to get through the rest of the Permanent Resident/Naturalization process. So at least as far as the U.S. is concerned, the concept of a "mail order bride" no longer means what it used to.

I remember hearing a story on the radio, on one of the older radio drama shows, which was based on this but set in the future. Sorry but I don't really remember the name of the story, and I vaguely recall the term "Radio Mystery Theater" but I'm not sure if it was on this.
The story. It is set in the future and two con men are on Mars running a mail order bride buisness. These two are in a remote area of Mars in a mining colony composed only of men... And they are making arrangements to bring wives from Earth for them.
The pair had signed up desperate women from Earth that wanted, well, they were living in bad situations or they were less than plain-looking and men had no interest in them as wives OR women.
The two con men saw how plain they were and substituted pictures from a modeling SCAM they had done earlier for the women's pictures.
The miners chose wives and paid for the price of a round trip ticket plus the con mens "Finders Fees" plus an amount to be given to the women themselves. But it would take several weeks for the women to arrive, and the men were getting very nervous about the situation: The men were concerned that their "gorgeous " wives... Remember that they had been given modeling pics of attractive women... wouldn't like life in their remote area of the planet. It was rough hard work and there were none of the perfumes, clothing stores, and the like the men thought their prospective wives were used to.
Now the two con men had run this SCAM before and they always left a day or so before the wives were to arrive and BOTH SIDES realized that they had been conned.
But not this time... The miners delayed them until their wives were to arrive on the only transport that went to their mining colony.
The two con men thought that they were going to be killed by both sides.
However, when the wives began arriving, the men were overjoyed to see that they were NOT fashion models but rugged women like themselves. And after they talked together, that these women were used to doing hard work and living in conditions the men were living in.
On the women's side, they were getting something they had never had in their lives... Men actively wooing and romancing them. And being totally serious about it.
Instead of being horribly killed, the two con men became heroes to both sides, and attended as honored guests all of the marriages that were performed. Not one woman went back to Earth.
In other places, their scam had resulted in enraged people on both sides... But in this case, it led to rock solid marriages and children about a year later.
Why did this happen? The story ends with one of the con men saying that the women who had signed up socially were "Below Plain looking" BUT the men who had signed on to work in a remote mine on Mars were likewise socially "Below Plain Looking" as well. Then finished it by saying that it was like running the lead bars painted gold scam, only to discover that the mark was far more interested in lead than in gold.

Oddly enough that story is indicative of a major issue facing society today. I have found more often than not, plain looking women think they deserve a 10 gq investment banker. There's a term for them: 410's....fours that think their are 10's. That has been my experience since the 80's....it started with a book called "don't settle" and it taught women that they shouldn't settle on a "good man" they should wait until their dream man comes along.....hence why the most unhappy person in the west is a 42 year old woman with a successful career, no husband and no kids.
A good hardworking man isn't good enough for most these days.

    • @zaphodthenth
      @zaphodthenth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@muskokamike127 in that I agree. Wealthly men have wives and mistresses. But it is well known that many women chase after wealthly or important men because they want to get something out of them.
In Hollywood there are many starlet- wannabes who'd have wild sex with any "Producer" in order to get a movie role. Even if the "producer" was an obnoxious jerk and uglier than Quasimodo on a bad day.
These women are shooting for the wealthy upper crust lifestyle and would go for money instead of love.

I believe the statistics are 80% of women are hunting less than 30% of men.
The irony being that if you are the cream of the crop you are usually high maintenance/unfaithful and egotistical. Less is more as they say, so most men that women wouldn't look twice at are the men they SHOULD be looking for.
Reminds me of a matchmaker/marriage councillor joke. It's long so I won't write it if there is no interest.

@@zaphodthenth Funny enough; in the modern day women are more likely to be unfaithful than men.
I haven't had a gf for years and girls call me a freak. The thing is...I COULD get a gf if I wanted to. But I don't. Western women are like fast food dating. They always want to move onto the next thing. The quote they used in this video about the dating pool being wide but shallow...I agree 100%. They all say/want the same things and it's boring. "I want to travel. I don't want kids. I want to focus on a career. I want to enjoy my youth."
That's fine I guess. But as a traditional man that only has mild progressive values in that I believe a relationship should be 50/50...its not what I am looking for. And when you ask them what they bring to the table in the relationship...most can't answer that beyond beauty/sex. Cool; but I want more than that. I want commitment, trust, I want to know you have my back as I have yours. I want to know that you aren't going to go sleep with a co-worker or one of my friends after we have an argument over a bill or who forgot to take outh the trash or why I couldn't make dinner with family. I want someone who wants someone who is going to be as loyal to them no matter how hard things get.
