      It's true that the Berkey is a little pricey. But it basically lasts a lifetime. You just have to replace the canisters which you have to do with almost any filter setup, and they last a really long time too. Bottom line - we love our Berkey!

    We use a clearsource ultra three stage filter down to .2 microns. Then a water softener and finally a berkey counter top filter for everything we drink and cook with.

      Good choice HT. You shouldn't have any water issues with that setup.

    Great video! “Clear2o” recently came out with a dual filter system. the pre-filter is 20 micron with a 1 micron that fits inside of it. The pre-filter is also washable which is great. You can use the blue filters inside the pre-filter if you choose to and not use their product. Also love that Berkeley filter great system heard nothing but awesome things about it!

    That little blue Camco Filter, I have been using for years. And now Camco has come out with an even larger version of that same filter, that should last you for the entire Camping Year. Twice the Carbon Filtration and Twice the KDF material to prevent mold and mildew when not in use. The larger Filter costs about $27 on Amazon and I swear by it! A Very GOOD Product!
    We also carry 2 full cases of bottled water for consumption. Plus, our Residential Fridge has a Carbon Water Filter in it too for the Drinking water and Ice maker. Does a Good Job and water and Ice taste good. Gets changed every six months or before I Winterize the RV.

    Would this work with tankless water heaters ? I hear some people have problems with too little water pressure and they get an error code? Any truth to this and if so any suggestions? What water pressure regulator do you use? Thank you.. love your channel.

      @RVInspectionAndCare  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely it will work with tankless water heaters. But the only way to know for sure is to give it a try. And this is the water pressure regulator that I use - amzn.to/387s1x7 I like the fact that you can adjust the pressure and that it has a clearly readable gauge.

    Whats best for water say lik we in Quartzsite, az which has really high calcium water?

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joseph. Calcium is a main contributor to hard water. So a good water softener usually helps bring this problem under control. Here is a link to one that is very highly regarded among RVers - amzn.to/3flk1fC

    Couldn't agree more with the need for water filtration. Outside minimum is 1 filter like the Camco blue filter, good is 2 filters, best is 3-way filtration. Inside for drinking water, Berkey is good, suggest Black Berkey. There are better options that are also not so cumbersome. The standards for drinking water are set by the NSF (nsf.org). Try to get the best you can afford because you are worth it!

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You summed it up well. It has been nice to use the Berkey for our drinking water through the coronavirus situation. There is no need for bottled water that way.

    I have 4 month old new motor home. It has the coach water filter like you have. I just went through winterizing yesterday and drained the water filter. Thinking it is a great time to get a replacement water filter I went to Camping World and there are TONS of different water filters. WHICH IS BEST. I removed a white one and there are several white and black filters. I called Culligan and really got the run-around as to "what do I want to filter out?" I tried to say several times I am in a RV and using lots of different water sources and just want the best generic water filter. They refused to answer. Then I said should I buy the white filter or black. Still they would not answer. So I ask you? What is the best universal replacement water filter for you RV. Plus a second question can I run the blue in-line water filter you show on your youtube with the coach water filter?

      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don, There is an incredible number of kinds of water filters on the market but what I use is a general purpose whole-house filter that filters down to 5 microns. Since I use the blue filter out at the water hookup, the second filter in the coach just continues to filter the water further. For most activities that don't involve drinking water like bathing, washing and so on, this kind of filtration should be just fine. It could be ok for drinking water too, but I prefer using the Berkey system as a third filtration process to get my drinking water as clean as possible. Here is a link to the kind of filters that I use in my whole-house filter - amzn.to/2WtYMjf I hope this helps.

    What about ice through the RV freezer/ice maker and not water through the Berkey?

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question Phil. If you have an automatic ice maker in your RV it's probably fed by a water line. In that case, Berkey water isn't going to help you much. Using a reverse osmosis filter might be a better choice than the Berkey for pure water in that instance. But we just make ice the old fashioned way in trays and so we use the Berkey water for that too.

    • @philgreene4091
      @philgreene4091 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RVInspectionAndCare Thank you for your info. I'd prefer to use the freezer ice maker just from a convenience standpoint. So you feel an inline filter and a "whole-house" filter combination as described is not sufficient for an automatic ice maker fed with a water line?

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philgreene4091 Using inline filters for the whole RV for bathing and cleaning, and then using the Berkey for drinking water is one of the most cost effective ways to get great water filtration. But the Berkey can't be rigged to supply water to an automatic ice maker. And it does no good to use ultra-filtered water from the Berkey for drinking if you then put less filtered water in it in the form of ice cubes. So reverse osmosis works well as an inline filtration system that feeds everything in the RV including ice makers and water dispensers. It's more expensive than the Berkey to use over time and it requires installation. But it would work well for you in the application you are describing. I hope that helps.

    Is there a reason you do not consider installing an RO system in your RV? This will give you excellent quality drinking water on demand. No wasting plastic bottles, no weight problem, and it can feed your ice maker to give you safe ice for your beverage of choice.

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi George. Good question. RO systems are great. But they aren't usually very cheap to buy and have them installed correctly. The point of this video is to discuss a cost-effective system that is easy to assemble for anyone and as low-cost as possible. That's why I mention using the two in-line carbon filters for most water uses such as bathing, washing, etc. And then buy the Berkey filter for drinking water filtration. With the Berkey, it eliminates plastic bottles, adds very little weight and produces water for use in making ice as well, just not with an ice maker. Plus it's portable! And the Berkey filter replacement costs are very low. But RO filters are great as are other filtration systems like ultraviolet filters and so on. Use whatever works for you and whatever you feel most comfortable with.

    • @georgemccaig5207
      @georgemccaig5207 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      RV Inspection And Care Oh, I completely agree on the pre filters you have discussed for general water use. But for drinking water an RO can be easily piped to every sink you have, and to the ice maker in your refrigerator. Then you would not brush your teeth with water you would not drink.

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgemccaig5207 Those are good points George. If an RVer's budget allows for the cost of buying and installing an RO system properly, it's a great way to go.

    • @georgemccaig5207
      @georgemccaig5207 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anthony Ramsey A good point I had. Not considered.

    • @johnlynch78
      @johnlynch78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding of the RO system is that it is a poor choice if you are doing any boondocking due the amount of waste water required.

  • @Josef_R
    @Josef_R 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're standing next to a water filter that is not the one in your links, the Culligan in your links gives no micron rating, and then you start talking about a Berkey even though you seem to have a filter in use next to you. I can't follow any of this.

    • @RVInspectionAndCare
      @RVInspectionAndCare  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Josef. The filter in my motorhome was installed at the factory so I obviously can't recommend it for other RVers. But it is possible to get a canister filter that is similar in almost every way and the one I recommend is the Culligan RVF that is suitable for all RVs. The filter that it uses is the D-15 filter that is a 5 micron filter. You can find links to that replacement filter on the Amazon page where the RVF is listed. The point of my video is that if you use these inexpensive filters for water being used for washing , cleaning and bathing, you can then afford to buy the Berkey filter for drinking water and have the overall best filtration for the least cost. I hope this explanation helps.
