      Hello Alex,
      is it true that the camera has no auto focus? Blackmagic says that the camera will be good for sports productions. But without auto focus I would have a big problem with that.

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maximilianschmidt7432 It has autofocus but it is not continuous autofocus. You basically press and hold the screen on an area each time to trigger the camera to focus. If your subject changes you need to re trigger it. If you're not confident in using manual focus for your sporting event, I would probably recommend you looking at cameras that have continuous autofocus built in instead :) Hope this helps

    Hi Alex,
    You mentioned around minute 11:16 that the Studio Camera 4K pro only records 4K, but what if the cameras are connected to an Atem Mini Pro, not even that way could I scale the resolution down to 1080p? I mean, the Atem Mini working as a bridge between the camera and the computer.
    Thanks

    Great info, thanks. I started working in broadcast TV on a 2 camera Outside Broadcast truck. This was the state of the art gear at the time. Cost hundred of thousands to put together. Now one can put together a 4 camera video recording studio/OB setup for around $10,000.00. Nuts! We live in exciting times. The fixed monitor situation is a bit of a pain in the rear but I am sure it has to do with cost cutting. BMD have been made aware of this from the very start when these designs first came out. Question for you, if program video can be fed back to the screen, that would permit you to use this as a monitor when not used as a camera?

  • @truecuckoo
    @truecuckoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice! Thanks for all the great Blackmagic related videos, mate! Truly appreciate them 🙏🏼 These new cameras look solid! I think for a one-man studio setup, it’s really convenient with a flip out screen, so it’s kind of a bummer to have that amazing screen which I would rarely look at. Is the microstudio4k discontinued? What little monitors would you recommend with quality to match for a camera like these?

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, yeah I agree with you, a screen that has some move-ability would definitely be nice! In terms of external monitors, I use a lot of BM's Video Assists. I fine them great!

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlexPettitt thanks. I had a high end BM video assist for some time. Very nice. But in my closeup environment with a mic close-by, I found the Assist’s fan noise just about a notch too much for my setup. Now I’m just using a big cheap HD-TV. For keeping an eye on the composition, focus, histogram, audio levels and recording status. I’m thinking of getting a smaller portable HDMI monitor though. 12-15” or something.

    From everything I've heard BMSC is a great studio camera for multicam set ups, but when you wanna use it as a regular "run & gun" camera is where it falls short (on top of it being a MFT mount) and you'd go better with a Sony or equivalent prosumer camcorder

    Audio engineer here. If you move that mic about 6in from your mouth it'll help get rid of those plosives and exhaling noise. Condensers aren't meant to be so close to your mouth, unlike dynamic mics which are supposed to be around 2in away.

    Lenses for studio pro 4k G2.
    I don't know what kind of lenses to use for my church and a two - or three person commentary hour show.
    I want to be able to use the focus/ Zoom accessories for each camera.
    If I am shooting at 60fps at 4k/UHD, I need a lens for depth of field, i need to zoom in tightly on the subjects' eyes, focus, and properly frame that subject but still keeping the subject in focus.
    All three cameras will have teleprompters on them.
    If you could suggest a wide teleprompter and a lens so I could use the ATEM Camera control panel, that would be great.
    Thank you for your time.

    Here's a stupid question, do you need to use an ATEM mini to live stream with a Blackmagic Design camera? Say we're just running over a video transmitter like Hollyland Mars 400s, and into a camlink or video capture card on the other side plugged into our computer. Could you use OBS to do all the switching "in house"? I know you would have more functionality probably running through an ATEM, but would that work?

    Hello Alex! Great video! I'm a new subscriber. You got me with the new NAS video (I also just purchased a QNAP) ... and I'm glad to see you use the BMD Studio 4K Pro (just purchased a couple of these myself). QUESTION. You mentioned that you use the Mini Extreme switcher to help you focus. Are you then recording in-camera instead of the switcher? I know the switcher is only HD. How else are you using the switcher at your workstation while shooting? Thanks man!

One for the OUT (to the ATEM) and one for the IN (from one of the ATEM's AUX's back to the camera). Then set that AUX bus on the ATEM to be program output. I have been searching around quite a bit and have it not yet found a solution to my situation. In short, I want to connect my ATM Mini Extreme Iso switcher to one of the new black magic 4K plus cameras via HDMI. However the problem is in our permanent install situation, I need a cabling distance of 200'.
    I have yet to get a definitive answer from anyone on whether this is possible with HDMI, including the option of some of the optical and or Active HDMI cables, or even an HDMI over cat six conversion set up.
    Obviously I want to maintain the two way communication option to be able to control the camera from the switcher.
    Any guidance here is greatly appreciated

    Hi Alex, thanks for the video. The specs say it has autofocus with compatible lenses. Is this continuous autofocus that tracks your eye/face, and which lenses are supported with autofocus capabilities?

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cheine, it wouldn’t be continuous auto focus as the camera doesn’t currently do that. You’d have to trigger the autofocus by long pressing and holding on the screen or setting it as one of the three function buttons. I hope this helps

    Hi, would you happen to have any recommended remote heads to control pan & tilt via control room?
    Also, I understand it records RAW ONLY internally but what if I'm trying to send signal to my ATEM switcher can I manipulate it to ProRes through the SDI output? Thanks!

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Rosalia, the best one I’ve seen is the DJI RS2 with a Middle Things controller. This gives full control of Pan & Tilt & all camera controls.
      The SDI output is uncompressed, so if you attach a recorder that records in ProRes via SDI then you can record to that. For example, a Hyperdeck Mini will record the SDI output from the camera In either Pro Res or H.264 :)

    Same sensor as the BMPCC 4K, but I got trapped by the Studio not doing ProRes - I had a very tight workflow built around ProRes and didn't do my homework/testing on the Studio 4K+ before using it on a job. It caused a lot of issues in post...my own fault, but beware.

    • @GregStonham

      There's also no easy way to rig accessories on the Studio models, if you need to mount a little mic you may find yourself slinging it below a 15mm rod, under the lens.

    Yes, "World's Best Camera Audio" picks up the camera fan noise just fine! 😞
    There are VERY limited applications for on-camera microphones.
    Two that I can think of are: B-roll shots of breaking waves at the seashore,
    or B-roll shots of motor races (laps, pit activity, etc.)
    In both of those cases, the audio is there for authenticity, not for dialog, etc.
    and the sounds you are recording (surf, racecars) is significantly above the fan noise "floor".

    • @AlexPettitt

      I might be wrong, but if I remember correctly the comment was referring to the XLR inputs on the camera rather than the on board mics?

  • @karol.sobanski

    Okay but seriously - why would you think someone reaches around a lens to make it focus (apart from photographers)?
    Electrical built-in zoom or focus are alternatives (old as the broadcasting itself) to traditional follow focuses, not operating a lens by hand lol

    • @wasbeen
      @wasbeen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s the lens you have to think about. Having a good zoom (and focus) on a high end camcorder can be very helpful….. but the Studio camera Pro would probably be cheaper. For a church, get the Pro (not Plus) to make use of the SDI for long cable run, and XLR for audio from a PA desk. I’m thinking about the same thing now, as our SDI camcorder needs replacing.

      @AlexPettitt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on quite a few things, like what scenario they will be used in. You could go for an all 6K Pro setup, or look at the BMPCC 4K or 6K regular... or the new studio camera line up. All will work with powered zoom lenses when combined with the ATEM :)

    The BMD Studio Camera 4K Pro has a lot going for it, but ultimately falls short of the feature set offered by the Panasonic BGH1 cube camera. The BGH1 has the same MFT lens mount, dual native ISO sensor, and 4K BlackMagic RAW external recording features as the BMD Studio 4K Pro. It also has its own ethernet remote control/streaming port, which unlike the BMD, does not require an expensive interface box. Though the BGH1's SDI ports are only 3G versus the BMD's 12G-SDI, the BGH1 offers a wide range of internal 10-bit 422 recording modes, which the BMD completely lacks.
    The BGH1's biggest advantage, however, is its compact cube-shaped form factor, which allows you to rig it up in any way you prefer. Add a tiltable Atomos or Video Assist monitor/recorder, mount it on rails, or even on a gimbal. IME, these capabilities are far more valuable than the proprietary remote control and intercom features BMD offers with the Studio Camera 4K Pro.
