    I’m so glad you have grown to love Pittsburgh ❤️ I love that you treated your subscribers to the awesome literary scene we have! I ran a vibrant book club here for many years that led to lasting friendships and exposure to books I would never have considered reading 📖 I love our independent and used bookstores and recommend a visit to Beyond bedtime Books on Potomac in Dormont. The owner is knowledgeable and lovely to chat with. I am so thankful for all the wonderful literary opportunities we have n’at. Happy reading to all yinz!

    I am going back watching older videos and could watch this one over and over. I grew up in SW PA and much of that time in Pittsburgh. Although I live in the Midwest now, my heart is still in Pittsburgh. Thank you for this video.

    I agree that Carnegie is a huge reason. I think another reason we have such a literary scene is due to our plethora of University’s…I have read several books by Pittsburgh area college graduates. You are so right…Pittsburgh is an AMAZING place to live!!

      I think you're right on the money - the universities definitely contribute to the scene!

    I love Pittsburgh and this makes me love it even more! I used to travel for work and was always on the hunt for great places to retire. Pittsburgh is definitely on the list. Now it’s bumped up on the list! I’m in Seattle which also is a good literary city, however it’s gotten too big and unwieldy to enjoy any more.

    I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland and we have had a few Carnegie Library branches for decades. Never would have guessed I’d end up living in the city that Carnegie called home.

    Since I grew up there and attended Pitt I can tell you that the Carnegie legacy is alive and well in Pgh. That is why! We also love movies, stories and many of our immigrants wanted to get out of the steel industry and move into something better. If you look, many of the greats in Hollywood went to Carnegie-Mellon University and The University of Pgh... and we also have a great storytelling community, actors and creatives and writers, playwrights and little ol me who moved away to seek her fortune and I did in London but have Pittsburgh in my genes, my father was born there! I am sure glad someone is speaking up for Pgh, it is a great city!!

    There are two Carnegie library buildings here in Cambridge Ontario Canada. One in the Galt section of town and one in Hespeler section.
    They are no longer used as libraries but they have been preserved as historic buildings.

Checking out some of the city's bookish offerings is a great place to start - also have you read This Is Where You Belong by Melody Warnick? It's all about moving to new places and finding ways to feel at home - I loved it & think it could be really helpful for you! I don't know if you have Instagram, but if you'd like to chat more, you're welcome to DM me over there. 😊

    Well, now I gotta apply to Pittsburgh's dental school as well, for my license :D

      I didn't live here at that time, so I can't say if every aspect that has changed has been an improvement, but based on everything I've read and experienced for myself, the city - economically and culturally - has come a long way!

    wow! i think i'll have to add pittsburgh to my travel bucket list! sounds like a great city to explore with lots of book souvenirs to bring home! :D that's definitely one downside to the city i live in (montreal) - not a huge selection of english bookstores and sales here, but we do have some great cultural events, so there's a balance. and having fun isn't hard, when you've got a library card - maybe you could do a tour of the new library sometime! would love to see it!

    • @abookolive
      @abookolive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely come visit someday! I'm biased (obviously), but I think it's such an incredible place with so much to do & see. And a tour of the new downtown library sounds so fun - I haven't even seen it yet! I'll have to see if I can call in some favors to arrange such a thing 😂

      Welcome to the area! There's so many bookish things to explore...and non-bookish things, too! Honestly come to Squirrel Hill, park on a side street (or come on a Sunday when public parking is free all day) and explore Murray Ave & Forbes Ave. Sundays are ideal, actually, because Amazing Books is closed on Saturdays.
