The Camino Song

I wanted to share this little insight into my journey, and perhaps inspire others to consider walking a pilgrimage. Following what brings one alive seems to be ever more important as we embark into the 2020's. Here's a wee story about the song...
I wrote this song on the Camino de Santiago at the end of 2019. The first two lines sprung from a conversation one day with a fellow pilgrim I met, (Nadav you crazy wonderful human!). "They asked me where I'm going. I'm just walking, I'm just walking." It stuck in my head and on a rainy day in Leon, I sat down in a small Spanish bar and wrote a song. Picking up old nylon string guitars in Albergues along the way, playing it every now and again, I carried it with me and wanted to record it in Santiago. I didn't know how this would come to fruition, but on the day of walking into Santiago, I bumped back into Mario, a musician I had met a few weeks before. I told him of my idea, and he had the equipment to record, as he had been filming his own journey all the way from Switzerland. We tried a few bars in Santiago thinking they might have a guitar we could use. Mario ended up going to the outskirts of the city and finding a cheap second hand guitar from a pawn shop, and I found what I could in the hostel to make a shaker (water bottle, rice and crushed up pasta!) We decided to get up early the following day, and head to plaza outside the cathedral to record it. We got some takes (thanks to Laura for helping out), and then with some other pilgrims headed out on the final part of the Camino to Finisterre, where I chose to finish my pilgrimage. The poem at the end is by David Whyte, and I've posted the lyrics to the song below.
“They asked me where I'm going, I'm just walking, I'm just walking
They asked me where I'm going, as I walk around the bend
The wind how it is blowing, and I'm walking, I'm just walking
To follow without knowing, with the sun behind my back.
It's only me and my shadow, the sound of stones under my feet.
My eyes searching for an arrow, perhaps I'll stop at the next town.
I'm unravelling, travelling far.
Three weeks and counting, I'm halfway there by now.
My body aches, my mind is tired, but I feel I'm not alone.
We are carrying out hearts home.
On the way to Santiago.
Listen to the church bells ringing, and I'm walking, I'm still walking
Some days I feel like singing, and some days I want to cry
These decisions that I'm making - all that talking, all that talking,
And these patterns that I'm breaking, in the walking they can mend.
On the way to Santiago.”
Glorious. I live in Galicia, along the Invierno route, in the Ribiera Sacra, and it is always a joy to wish the walkers a "Bien Camino" as I pass them in the car.

Ho scoperto per caso la tua canzone.......e mi sono ritrovato in ogni strofa.......ai dipinto alla perfezione i sentimenti che hai, che ho ma che penso abbiano provato tutti i pellegrini ......ti ringrazio.di cuore

I discovered your song by accident....... and I found myself in every verse....... to perfectly painted the feelings you have, which I have but which I think all the pilgrims have experienced ...... thank you, heartily

Wonderful song. Do you have a version with chords for sale someplace? I'd love to learn this proper (esp the version on Uke that you recorded)
It's cute and nice! I feel like John Baez...

Hi - is it possible to get the TAB somewhere?
Hey Thorsten! I haven't uploaded the tab anywhere yet... You're very welcome to make one though, ultimate guitar? I can send you the chords...
@@suzimacgregor_music Hi cords would be perfect. Many thanks.
It seems that the 1st chord is A-major.
@@gard68hst It is! What's your email? I can send the chart.
many thanks in advance
I can’t understand the lyrics. All I can understand is “me and my shadow.” The guitar overrides her voice. Is there anywhere to get the written lyrics?
@@harrykey2448 Not for me. Each time I listen to it I can pick up a few more words but not all of them. I do wear hearing aids so maybe that’s the problem.
