Never thought about using a ruler or a board with holes That's a good idea especially for longer rows. Thanks for the tip. There is no food sold in a grocery store that taste home grown.
This is a great short! I'm in central indiana. Summers get hot FAST. If youre like me, you have to start your spinach slightly differently. If you're using bloomsdale , it goes to seed in the heat really quickly...so start early March, even if it wet or cold. You can also start it in October the fall before, but it needs a little protection from super cold or winter wind. Or choose a variety that can take more heat and plant in late March or early April. I love Space spinach.
@@leacotaco It’s pest! I’m really thinking it’s the cabbage moth! I haven’t tried neem oil yet, I think I will try it! @@sunnylyon42 if it's pest definitely try the neem oil trick!! (If they're still smaller plants test a part of the solution on the plant first seedlings are sensitive to their foliage being sprayed like that)
@@beajaye8244 if you're a beginner I wouldn't recommend this. Hydroponic systems are something that can get very easily contaminated if you don't use them right. Many plants get crown rot (or just plain root rot) if you have them too far into the hydroponics solution, which can spread throughout the whole hydroponics system if all of your plants are on the same system. You also have to frequently replace the water of hydroponics systems so it's a bit of misinformation to say it's no work.

I start kale indoors, but I've used the ruler for lettuce and arugula plants. I find it really helpful. If you're interested in watching more, I've got a whole video on here about planting spinach
I bought a surplus bolt of green tulle from a second hand place this year. I have had a raised bed garden for the last 2 years and last Spring I put a new one in the back yard. Bought 3 10 by 6 lumber untreated.(has to be untreated) this November we are putting 16 by 5 foot cattle panels over the back one and 6 mil plastic to grow over Winter. I have onions and garlic out there with tomatoes this year.
It’s a common misconception that you need to space spinach to the recommended spacing. I sow my rows densely and let the strong outcompete the weak. Using this approach you are guranteed to not have “holes” in your row. I’ve also never covered my spinach with row cover as it’s the only thing in my garden that doesn’t get attacked by pests. This short is one of many that have someone who genuinely lacks experience telling you what you should and should not do.
Look at your property If you have a area that you can't do anything else with that's kind of hidden think about growing herbs. They are so good to cook with them.
How much of that row to go in a giant salad? Omg, just thought about the shrinkage you get when you cook spinach. Better build a few more boxes.😋 it did grow up nice & purty, tho.
It's helpful to grow these textured leaves, like savoy spinach, in a top layer (1/2 inch or so) of pure compost and then some mulch over it. If the sand never goes in, you never have to wash it out! A little compost has a much nicer texture than cronching on sand.
@@trinkab It's really not! Finished compost isn't crunchy; it actually has about the same texture as the greens you're eating; the bacterial balance means you're not ingesting pathogens; and it won't add any flavor except maybe a tiny bit of earthy organic taste which is practically indistinguishable from the vegetables. Most importantly it's more water-soluble so it washes off easily and you rarely get any. I'd take compost over sand any day :)
Hi there! You can buy bags of compost from garden centers or hardware stores. It's got lots of nutrients in it to feed your plants. Check out this post for a breakdown of the planting steps: www.gardenary.com/blog/5-easy-steps-to-plant-spinach-from-seed
I buy from the grocery store when it's too warm to grow my own, but the stuff you buy has often traveled long distances to get to you. It's often no longer at its peak flavor or nutritional value. The spinach I grow at home is fresher and so much tastier!

Wow! You can add lettuces to that easily too.
That's very cool.
That’s a cool seed ruler!
Not true. Spinach takes up to three weeks to germinate. And it takes about four to six weeks for it to be that big.
I planted and covered mine! Something is having a field day eating them up!!
Animal or pest? Next time you water them mix in neem oil concentrate into what you water them with if its pest.
Try KRATKY method.

Stagger your rows by planting in windows :)
When should you use straw over seeds and a little compost? Fo you recommend a heating coil?

I love the ruler idea! How long did it take for you to plant all those seeds in your raised bed?
Maybe 10 to 15 minutes just because they're long beds

Wash for hours and **still** have sandy grit.

Sooooooo much easier just to take a trip to the store or better still, the farmers market

What kind of compost?
Stuff you make yourself or buy. Just make sure it's finished (not still decomposing). If you're buying, I love Espoma's organic

Did you water the seed in?
Yes, very gently!

She has never planted spinach before. Spinach grows vigorously and needs space. Overcrowding is a waste.
Why do you want to replace the grocery store spinach if it's organic and if it's available?

Just dig trenches and sprinkle seeds in lightly. There's no need to be so careful about seed spacing
