  • Prince Rogers Nelson grew up surrounded by friends and family in North Minneapolis. Even when he was very young, family elders told his cousins, "Prince is special."
On the day before Prince's birthday, join his family, friends, and others for a wide-ranging conversation about growing up with Prince, his North Minneapolis roots, and how his influence is being felt around the world today.
Program: A Story in 4 Parts
Welcome: Host and moderator, Michael Dean of The Prince Podcast, and Dr. Elliott Powell from the University of Minnesota, co-organizer of the 2018 Prince from Minneapolis symposium, will open the program.
Prince and Minneapolis: Discover Prince's North Minneapolis with a presentation by independent historian Kristen Zschomler and a moderated conversation with cousins Chazz Smith, Shantel Manderville and Frank Collier, and early musical mentors Pepe Willie and Spike Moss.
Prince, The Influencer: Through a live video feed from the UK, scholar Dr. Kirsty Fairclough, BBC radio presenter and producer Karen Gabay, and music manager Hayley Drinkall will connect with the audience about Prince's influence on popular culture and their work.

@@msphoenix269 The truth was that how black Minneapolis bands were discriminated against in the early days and how the media tried to rewrite Prince's history after he passed.

This was a public event so with all due respect, anyone could attend. My wife & I organized this talk on behalf of the Minnesota Historical Society. They gave me a budget and I invited who I wanted to. The history and the information about our family is important to me to preserve. The talk was about our cousin so let’s not draw any other conclusions. It was a beautiful gathering & reception and I appreciate your support.

Cousin Chazz, thank you so much for organizing this and all that you've done to keep Prince remembered and honored. I took the tour with you in June of 2018, and it was wonderful seeing the town through your eyes; I will never forget it.

Chazz. Thank you. Thank you for helping to clear all this up about the history of your cousin, his family background, and the environment and the people who influenced him.
One of the best documentaries I have seen about Prince on TH-cam featured you and Pepe Willis laying down the facts about this. I would HIGHLY recommend Ava Duvernay seek YOU, SPIKE, PEPE , his AUNTIE, his sisters out to help develop her documentary about Prince.

@@shauntelmanderville8072 - Actually thank you! I have watched alot of documentaries about Prince and of course there are a TON of misconceptions out there about him. Of course the truth is never as sensational in how the entertainment industry presents it. So it all depends on how and if Ava wants to be true to his legacy.
If she goes for a docu- drama laden with actors and actresses it will be most difficult in my opinion. Who in the heck can play HIM and pull it off?

So late on this! 🙄🙄 This is such a deep dive in North side Minne roots right here! Real talk, I appreciate this soooo much! I nearly fell out when Ms. Bernadette Anderson's name was mentioned bc her contribution to the culture is undeniable yet not often mentioned! No offense, this needs to be added as a "Real Talk" panel of Celebration Prince: The Man, Music and Culture. Hey Paisley Park, it's ok to tell P's story in it's totality--the good, bad and ugly!
GREAT JOB moderating, Michael Dean!! I will most def be at the next scheduled event!

Peace and blessings to you Chazz, Shauntel, and your entire family. Prince was very inspirational to me as a young black boy who didn’t quite fit in and what he embodied was crucial to my self-esteem. He believed and bet everything on himself and no matter what he did that was considered anti-establishment, he WON against all odds

I went to Minneapolis for my first ever tour of Paisley Park a few weeks ago, and this video is a big part of the reason why, only I didn't know it until I was there and researching a number of the places listed in the digitours section (second link). I cannot tell you how invaluable this video and the information in it was to me, in terms of understanding him in terms of these places. I found maps that told me to go to Uptown (and within it, Calhoun Square, where there's a placcard with the lyrics of the song), and it helped me understand Prince's world that much more as a result.

I'm sorry but Andre Cymone SHOULD have been there. I don't know what's going on between Chazz & Andre but some things that happened to Prince do appear to have been left out or "modified" to suit a particular narrative. Out of Prince's own mouth he has mentioned the phone booth incident, lived with Andre because he was kicked out, etc. Why wasn't Tyka there? It seems that when Chazz does an event, Tyka and the other siblings are nowhere to be found. There appears to be some kind of division within this family realm. And sorry, some of the history does appear to be whitewashed by the cousin; not Tyka, the other siblings or Andre. Why is Chazz speaking out now, when Prince is no longer here? Where is the justice for Prince so far?

    • @charlessmith1291

I’ve been speaking out before my cousin passed. Like others Andre could have attended and I’ve invited Dre before but this time I wanted family and a few others who complemented Prince & I on the panel. And for the record I am not changing the history. I am correcting it. And how can a black man whitewash anything? That’s actually funny! Your obviously a plant so you should really know that my family did not grow up with the Nelson’s. Duane was the only one I was close to. I am working closely with law enforcement and will continue to do so until we all have justice. Peace- #Justice4cuz

But see, this was a part of the history of Prince I didn't know about, but I needed to know about this part of the history.
