    In a world full of convenience and throw away...I find that maintenance on my chain, my bike in general, is a right of passage. In 15+ years of riding, I’ve bit off more than I can chew more times than I care to admit BUT it has given me a greater appreciation of my trusty steed (different over the years). Although it is not my favorite past time either, riding 12k+ a year here in the PacNW requires one to PM often and sometimes weekly. While most bikes are tucked away till next riding “season” (🙄), I find solace in keeping my bike (currently ‘19 Triumph ScramblerXE 1200) road ready...even with a sealed X-chain😉 Ride On my friends🤙🏾

    Plain chain, always had. If you want to ride a motorcycle, you should enjoy servicing it and taking care of it. Imo, that is.

    Awesome. So, by sheer accident I have been doing it right all these years! I have and will always run plain chains and give them lots of love on my ADV / Dual Sport and dirt bikes.......and run sealed o-ring chains on my street only bikes for the cleanliness and low maintenance. 😎👊👊

    Every bike I've owned had a drive shaft or a rubber band. This 2019 Interceptor 650 is the first time I've had to deal with a chain. Eight months of ownership and I still haven't dealt with it. Haven't washed the bike either. It got a bath at the dealership on the first service, and a coat of ceramic something or other right after that. I dust it off with the leaf blower, car duster, and wipe it down with a damp microfiber cloth. I putt around town and take a leisurely ride in the mountains once in a while. Top performance isn't a factor for me.
    I think a sealed chain is going on it at the next service.

    I've been riding dirt bikes for over 20 years, never had a problem with a plain chain. A chain usually stretches out of spec. before failing. My new WR 450F did come with a sealed chain though.

    This is why I bought a belt driven bike. Time that I don't want to commit is required for chains. Although... I'm seriously considering changing my ways for my next bike but I will have to make a chain cleaning kit that is super easy to use.

    My dad taught me how to clean a chain. First, remove chain an dplace in regular gasoline and let it soak a bit. Next, take a good non-steel brush and clean it, all of it. Then take it out and let it air dry for a while (2-3 hours). Next, soak it in oil, then let it drip down until it no longer drips. Then Place on bike and give it a shot of good lube and your ready to go. Then just repeat this process when needed. P.S. I was taught this when I was twelve, I'm now 62 and still riding, always worked just fine.

    Aside from initial cost, I didn't hear a negative. Cost offset is absorbed thru longevity. Power loss will be so minimal the rider won't even notice the difference.

    But shit.... A sealed chain isn't exactly maintenance free, you still have to clean and oil it just as much as a non sealed chain so I say take the few extra HP and lower chain cost and just get the non sealed chain and be done with it. Hell I thing sealed chains are as much if not more of a gimmick then chain cleaners and lubricators.

    • @MociProgrammer
      @MociProgrammer ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Do you think the non-ring chain can be installed on a suzuki sv650? The current O-ring chain lasted 20,000 km, even though I maintained it regularly.

      makes no difference, you couldn't measure the loss on a dyno anyway

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CPU UK I agree. Lost HP = heat and a sealed chain doesn’t run enough hotter to hardly notice so the horsepower dissipated is probably 0.1 HP or less. Much more and you’d have a pretty hot chain.

    • @jiankhan
      @jiankhan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cpuuk Oh yes, you'll see the loss. About 1.5% to 3% loss, depend of the chain and the rings type. With a powerful bike, no, you will not notice it, but with a low powered one, you will.
      Less friction, less weight, but a lot more work to maintain. It's just a personnal preference. I use non sealed chain, so i can use do high pressure washing and fast lubrication every weeks.
