  • Installing strap buttons on a ukulele. These steps also work for acoustic guitars. It's a quick job that doesn't require many tools.

    Finally a video that shows fitting a button to the bottom of the guitar, which may be the easy bit, but mine is a first guitar and it doesn't have any buttons and all the other videos just show how to fit one on the neck. Thank you.

    Might also pay to check the neck mount in case you have a bolt on neck or truss rod. Just avoid trying to put a wood screw through a steel bolt.

  • @GrumpyTy34er

    I've installed buttons straight into a cigar box before without a block, but I know that an actual ukulele will usually be much thinner than that.
    On another note, ever thought of making a banjolele? I think I've mentioned it before, but I found some small cheap tambourines without the bells on Aliexpress for less than $10. I'm planning a build with the smallest one now.

    • @CircuitsAndStrings
      @CircuitsAndStrings  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How thick were the cigar boxes? It seems like 1/4 inch would be the minimum thickness to properly anchor the screw.
      I’ve planned to make banjolele for a long time, but haven’t taken the leap. Are those tambourines that you found tunable? I want to make a 5 string uke with a tunable head.

    • @GrumpyTy34er
      @GrumpyTy34er 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The boxes were maybe just shy of 1/4 inch. I usually add a bit of wood on the inside but I did without this time.
      The tambourine is definitely not tunable, but it will be good practice. The drum is also definitely a synthetic material.

    I have a 1/4 nylon string guitar, I don't have access to a drill currently. Could I just screw the strap button screw slowly?

    • @CircuitsAndStrings
      @CircuitsAndStrings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bet that plan could work. You could also put a little bar soap on the screw to help it turn smoother. Some screws are prone to snap, so have extra one hand.

      @@CircuitsAndStrings Thank ypu for the tip, it went quite well, it took a while but was smooth all the way due to the soap, the wood beign soft also helped. I used a shoe lace around the headstock with the lace into a ball at the end to fix it to the strap.

      @@CircuitsAndStrings Thanks! If it's possible for you I would recommend getting a 1/4, they're fun as hell and now with the strap being able to play standing has made me start playing it more than my other guitars! Even if they don't sound so great in E Standard, they more than make up for by being a great couch guitar and just playing it anywhere. I get two 15 minute breaks at work and I play it 10 minutes, then back to work. Since they let me, I now have another reason to go to work other than money haha. Best regards.

    • @CircuitsAndStrings
      @CircuitsAndStrings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to move the strap button, you need to make sure that there is enough wood for the screw to grab onto. You should confirm that there is a thick enough piece of wood at the location with something like a mirror or a small camera. If there is not enough wood, you could glue a piece inside the body.

      Unfortunately a drill really is only tool for this type of job. If it wasn’t a delicate instrument you could make the hole with a nail. But not a good idea for a uke.
      I bet a neighbor, friend, or coworker could help you drill a hole.
      Good luck!

    • @steventhehistorian
      @steventhehistorian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good cordless drill is something absolutely every functioning adult should have in their household. If you are an adult and you still don't own a drill, you should go buy one whether or not you plan on installing a strap on your ukulele. An adult without a drill is just a slave to the fasteners that hold their home and furniture together. And those fasteners are all gradually loosening.
