  • To see Europe at its wildest, join the party that kicks off the Easter season: Carnival.
    In Slovenia, a country with deep pagan roots, villagers scare off winter by dressing as a big shaggy creature called Kurent - a fun-loving Slavic god of hedonism.
    We drop in on the fun in this extended clip from "Rick Steves' European Easter." The full, hour-long special is streaming now at www.ricksteves..... Enjoy!

    Kurentovanje is the coolest and most beautiful carnival celebration I've ever seen. One of many great things of the small but beautiful country of Slovenia.

    Absolutely fascinating! Our class was going through the roman plays of Shakespeare and our professor was explaining to us some of the traditional rituals/festivals of early Gaulic peoples and how frightening/ confusing it was to the Romans who blended together their city and Hellinestic deities. But seeing this your imagination can bridge the gap. Very cool.

    Can someone please explain me why there is a almost exactly SAME tradition, thousands of kilometers away, in Northern Portugal, on thr far west side of Europe??? Even the name of the devlish characters are VERY similar! They are called "Caretos" (= Kurent). It is told that this portuguese tradition has Celtic roots but after seeing the same traditions in Slovenia and Bulgaria, I'm really confused now....something is not adding up....

    • @Smilinginmygrave
      @Smilinginmygrave ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can't speak for Bulgaria, but the Celts had a big presence in Slovenia and, by some theories, mixed with the Slavic settlers when they arrived. Even the first Slavic state in the area- Carantania is suggested to come from either Celtic " Karra" meaning rock (as the state was positioned among the Alps) or" Karantos" meaning friend or ally. So it is possible that this tradition is a mix of celtic and "eastern" pagan cultures- like the Slavs, Goths, Vandals, the former, if I remember correctly did also settle in Iberia.

      Traditionally only males could be kurent's (volley beast from the video), most main traditional masks were also male (usually young unmarried men). But nowadays that's not a problem, but the thing is this costumes are very heavy (skins, wooden or leather masks, bells, chains...), there is a lot of jumping, running, heavy drinking... There is a lot of different costumes depending on the region, kurent's are just the most known ones. Kurent was actually a demigod from Slavic mythology, a god of wine and partying.
