As someone who’s top two favorite characters are Hinata and Oikawa, every one of the aoba johsai vs. karasuno matches are so amazing yet heartbreaking to watch when only one team can win. We want to root for karasuno but you can’t deny that seijoh put in the effort & deserved to win as well. So after reading the manga (no spoilers lol), I realized Hinata and Oikawa are pretty similar. They’ve both been down about things out of their control (Hinata’s height & Oikawa’s lack of talent), yet they both push forward. Hinata learns to make up for his height on the court and Oikawa combats talent with discipline and hard work. They’ve arguably put in the most work out of everyone to get to where they are (especially in the manga) and it’s sad to see one of them lose.
I’ve always thought hinata and oikawa shared so many similarities! especially with what they both pursue after graduation lol they really had the same idea
Coach Ukai is so underrated just because he isn't the one making plays on the court. There's nothing in it for him if he coaches these kids, yet he shares his time, money, & wisdom with them. I love his relationship with Hinata as the show progresses, he's like his tiny (chaotic) volleyball son lmao
More specifically, I think officially the position of "Staff Advisor" or "Coach" of a school team can only be held by a teacher from the school (so has to have an employed staff member overseeing a school activity). Takeda brings Ukai in to help because although Takeda is technically the "Coach" of Karasuno, he obviously knows nothing about volleyball. In official matches in later seasons, Takeda is addressed as the "Coach", and Ukai as the "Assistant Coach".
I think that what I like the most about Takeda's words (and Haikyuu in general) is that they apply to everything that we do. It's ok to fail, what matters is, are we gonna stay there or are we going to learn and move foward? I just loved the moment Hinata and Kageyama stood up, because it meant that they decided to learn from it. And then there's Ukai, reminding us that to be able to grow we need to rest, recover and take care of ourselves. God, I love Haikyuu lol
25:11 due to cultural differences, a lot of reactors tend to think Ukai works at a dead end 7/11. Its actually his family business (the store is his mother's surname) that he inherited: he owns the store, the house, and the farm land (he wakes up at 4am to attend to the fields). If you live in the provinces, that lifestyle pays pretty good (also jp health insurance is a little better so he doesnt have to worry about his grandpa). It pays pretty good that theoretically you can actually coach for free. His friends in turn run the grocery, and the other runs the electroncs store.
God I just felt so hurt for Kageyama. Ultimately the team did loose because Oikawa read him. But still has a lot to learn. And his slow 1 step at a time learning process is one of the highlights of the show throughout the season. And notice how Oikawa does not gloat even though they won and Oikawa pretty much outsmarted him. It shows that deep down there is respect not just for the age but also for Kageyama his junior. Kageyama and Oikawa are just two of my favorites in the show. First because the position of setter is just interesting to me and their opposing play styles just put a new appreciation to how much thought goes in game. But another reason is both their mental struggles with a really negative attitude. Oikawa with his defeatist attitude and his jealousy and Kageyama with his selfishness and ignorance of the people around him.
I love that it's not overworking themselves that lets them defeat each other. It's important to work hard but what upgrades them everytime is their connection with people. As a setter that's so important. The trust, the understanding, I love that about Haikyuu that so key in volleyball.
I remember when I first watched that final point and I felt heartbroken by the loss. I've been there in my own games, and it sucks. But I absolutely love what Takeda tells Kageyama and Hinata afterwards; strength lies in the getting up and going forward. In the food scene, the impact of those words hit me hard because while it seems regular to eat after a big match, it's also one way to get up and go forward by healing the body, preparing it in a way for that future growth. I see it as Ukai's way of saying the same thing in the way he knows how. This is why I love the Takeda and Ukai tandem; they both focus on growth but use different approaches. However, despite these differences, both are servant leaders, and we need more of them in this world.
I think we can all relate to those moments when we feel like we did everything we could but still lose/fail. and trying again after the failure is really hard,, this ep was so intense and emotional. Can't wait for season 2! ♥♥
Great reaction, guys. I still remember the absolute gut-punch the first time I watched this, when Hinata's spike fades to the white screen, which then fades to the blockers and you realise Oikawa is about to finish his "...not today" speech.
Time for me to cry again:) Edit: After drying my tears, everything y'all said was just what I thought when I first watched this episode. I kind of knew they were gonna lose, since it's never that easy in anime for the protagonists, but my heart still broke lol. Thank you for this, can't wait for the last episode of Season 1 and the start of Season 2. I guarantee that there'll be even more moments where you'll fall in love with Haikyuu all over again. ❤❤❤❤
It's heartbreaking (and low key wickedly funny) watching you at the beginning of the episode, so sure Karasuno is going to win, knowing what's coming. I remember the first time I watched this episode (I was so mad I almost dropped it) so I'm not sure I want to watch what's surely coming 😅

this made me tear up a bit, i love this anime so much. oikawa is my top fav characters of all time! everything you said was just perfect.

Hinata is Oikawa and Kageyama is Iwai-chan haha. Even their relationship feels the same 😂.

Absolutely wonderful dude.
He is definitely being paid. What are you on about?
Takeda is both a teacher and the adviser for the club :)
Ukai supervise the team skill and physical health, while Takeda supervise the team's mental health.

oikawa... no matter if one likes his personality or not, he's an amazing volleyball player

@@seekittycat I swear!! it is poetic how each lost in their second and final set.

Corner shops like Ukai's family shop are beloved in Japan and are far better than our 7/11's. Show some respect.
