- There are more than 2,000 firefly species, found on every continent except for Antarctica - an astonishing diversity of movement and light. Firefly scientist Wan Faridah Akmal Jusoh explores the mysteries of these little beetles that light up the night and details her quest to discover and protect new species as their habitats are at risk of disappearing.

I'm so proud that a fellow Malaysian had give such a great Ted talk. Hope to be the start of many others.
alang-alang menyeluk pekasam, biar sampai ke pangkal lengan ❤ congratulations, such a wonderful storytelling and remarkable speech from Wan Faridah!
Amazing TED talk delivery. Got me crying because I dream to be like her when I was young. Best of luck
Such an engaging speaker! Fascinating. Thank you!
Bukan sahaja, baju melayu, tudung melayu, malah dimulakan juga dengan perkenalkan istilah bahasa melayu, kelip-kelip! Tahniah, Dr Wan Faridah Akmal Jusoh memang hebat!
Her way of telling the story is nice and the English is profound.
What a happy happenstance. My mother and I have just been talking last night about fireflies. I lamented that I haven't seen one yet in my 40 yrs of existence when she told me that she used to see them a lot in our place back in the day. Thank you for this fascinating talk/share.
Wow she is from my district. I am happy for her ❤
Malaysia’s treasure, both kelip2 and her ❤️
When I was a child, my father used to take my siblings and I to see fireflies (there was a lot!!) at night in a solitaire road near his hometown, a little town in the Araucania region in Chile. I keep that memory as a treasure in my heart
Faridah is wonderful. How could you not love the magic of fireflies.
I really love this important information you've provided! 💜 Thank you!
Proud of you sister! Love from KL, Malaysia
Used to catch "kelip-kelip" in my hometown. Ahhhh missing my childhood memories
Kalau di Indonesia namanya kunang-kunang
@@KhairunnisaIslamiyahDi malaysia juga kadang disebut kunang kunang di dalam bahasa Melayu klasik...
Such a nice, fitting dress!
Yes, I noticed I don't see as many fire flies as when I was growing up.
What an amazing person! So happy I watched this inspiring talk ❤️ I only saw fireflies one time, but that was incredibly beautiful. I wish we could find ways to saveguard their habitats and you know turn off all the lights that aren't so necessary.
What an amazing share. Thanks Wan Faridah for the amazing knowledge that you have shared with the world!!!
Luciola Singapura..what a name
I saw a swarm of Firefly in my childhood, only once, and it was one of the most magical moments of my life, ever.
Turn off outdoor lights. Never use herbicides, pesticides…and plant plants that are native to your area. And very important too…leave your fallen leaves, stop leaf blowing.
I agree but leaving dead leaves provides a habitat for mosquitoes which is a real problem in Malaysia or at least from when I was growing up 8-10 years ago.
So cute the kelip-kelip ❤
I saw lots of fireflies in Central Park of NYC, not in massive EDM light beat effect shown here.
Love the speech and stories 😍❤️
Thank you. I am always fascinated with firefly
Proud of you. Very inspiring.
17 years? 😲
👏👏👏👏👏
Amazing speech!
We call them Lightning Bugs here
Excellent TED Talks. Congratulations. Yes… its harder now to find fireflies in KL
Subhanallah. I wish i could experience to see firefiles in real ❤

Why is it relevant?
Oppression shouldn't be normalised
@@gao1812I think you're the one who are oppressed right now.

Excellent content, engaging delivery. well done!
A very good sharing! 🎉 tahniah!
Wish my neighbors with their obnoxious backyard lights ay night would see this. 😢
Free use of pesticides are killing off insects we value or that are beneficial.

Love to be Malaysian. Empower woman 🤍🇲🇾
Very inspiring! ❤
That’s funny she mentioned in the beginning how superstitions her community is and I immediately remember my home town, when most people, including my family, were both very religious and superstitious. For quite a while I couldn’t understand that phenomenon, since I was a non-believer. I thought, if you believe a holy book (whichever it is in your case) and it clearly says how to behave to be under god’s care, why would you believe in different other nonsense, like, a black cat crossing your way, etc? Only when I got much older I realized that it just perfectly matches together. People just believe! In whatever. They don’t care, they just want to believe, so they do in several things, often simultaneously and not caring if those beliefs are compatible or not…
Sorry, a bit off topic.
Interesting u caught the part where she mentioned about superstition. I live with one strong superstitious being. I find it ridiculous that I can’t bring out pillows from the house night time. It’s so ridiculous that I start to respect her beliefs cos she’s my mom. But what does it mean tho? I still don’t get it until now. Like another one, don’t lift ur legs up when ur lying on ur tummy. They say, u wish for ur mother to die, but in reality, it’s to prevent the ladies who wears night gown/ sarong from being exposed by doing so. Some superstition doesn’t make any sense. But others have their double meaning to it.
As salam. Tqvm for giving us something so beautiful.
Not sure if it's still remaining at The Southermost Tip of Mainland Asia, Tanjung Piai, Malaysia. Used to be alots last 15 years
