    I just tested P790 vs AP3 vs i500. I went with the i500. The near zero offset + distance + fabulous looks was the decider. It was very close though.

    A really great comparison would be with the i500 vs T-MB irons. They are very much the same....ie head of 17-4 stainless steel in cast bodies, hollow front cavities with thin hardened steel faces. The P790 has a 8620 cast head and the front cavity is filled unlike the i500.

  • @Nyasha33
    @Nyasha33 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The ping looks better, less offfset and thinner top and bottom edge. however the higher lofted option retro spec would result in higher spin numbers and would address the distance issue.

    • @simonh2011
      @simonh2011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      k Nyagumbo but it would go much higher due to the angle which is not good. Traditional lofts and hollow head is a disaster waiting to happen especially in the wind, that's why they are all made as distance irons...

    It’s an interesting paradox. Players that are good enough to play small, little offset, thin top line clubs are not looking for super strong lofts or longer shots. They already hit their irons plenty far. For players that need help, these irons will be too small of profile, top line and offset to be forgiving enough to hit consistently. The P790 is great technology but played by very few exceptional golfers. The I500 will end up being a driving iron for better players just like the p790. If you’re and average player, you can get a great set of “helping” irons for half the price of both of these clubs.

    Well done Michael, nice comparison, big difference in those spin models, I also noticed ping did not put any tungsten in the long irons like Taylormade did, maybe that contributed to the better dispersion. Keep up the good work 🏌️

    Great review! I guess the perfect iron is yet to be designed...lol. I’ve hit both and neither iron has great feel. PXG has better feel than both these irons, but the PXG players iron is shorter and the XF and SGI have too much offset and are too big...sigh.

    Thanks for an interesting H2H Mike, I just watched another channel with the same comparison (SAS) and he had the Spin the other way round. There they had the i500 Spinning an extra 1k to the TM, so I`m a little confused? Either way I think that the TM looks good, but the i500 looks STUNNING! That said I saw a set of the new P790`s in Black, WOW they are AWESOME (I had a bump in my pants and at my age that doesn't happen very often)!!!!!!!!!!

    Michael, Did Ping fit you with a particular swing weight or did you get the default head? If it was the default head, could you tell a difference in swing weight between the two? Which was heavier? I need a light head and when I tried the P790 it felt head heavy to me.

    • @SuperYoda7
      @SuperYoda7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Smith a good club fitter can make you the club with whatever Swing Weight you want.

    • @georgesmith4639
      @georgesmith4639 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I require a light graphite shaft and dont want weight added to it or to the handle so the only way I can get lower swing weight is by starting with the lightest head possible. That is why I asked about the weight of the head. Ive been told by Taylormade that the P790 heads dont have removable weights so they cannot be made any lighter than what I tried at a retailer. If the i500 heads start out at the same weight then I'll have to look elsewhere.

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TM use lighter heads when shaft length goes longer i.e. +1/2"
      Pretty sure Ping use same weight head and then at the end of the production line use different weighted badges to get desired swing weight. Not sure how they would do this with the G700 and i500 as no badges on these, maybe they change the screw in the toe to different weights to get desired swing weight.
      Have you watch my PING Factory Tour video, shows the irons going along the production line

    I just feel like these irons are meant for different people. I500 more forgiving looks bigger I feel more forgiveness and distance. When p790 is more players iron where u can shape the ball more and thinner top edge. I feel like the i500 would compare better to M3 maybe just becuase it’s a much bigger head with a bigger top edge and offset

    • @amgolfer3591
      @amgolfer3591 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually the i500 has a thinner top line, sir. You want to shape a ball, learn to hit a true forged blade. You will never look back:) With that said, I can move a P790 right to left and left to right, but it's harder for me. Great club and the feel of the P790 is good, not great IMHO as I prefer something a little different. However, I would throw in the P790 UDI in my bag any day of week though. I haven't hit the i500--I will soon. Nothing beats the feel of a true forged blade IMHO......

    Michael, I've got a shot at a great, low priced set of 718 T-MBs. I haven't pulled the trigger, because I was waiting for the new Pings. I have also hit the P790. I'm a 7HC, 60 years old... decent ball striker. I'm not asking you for anything other than your opinion... I will see a fitter. But all things equal, which set do you prefer and why?

    Im currently using the Nike vapor fly irons and Im wondering if I should change them to a newer set of irons. With a handicap of 24, what kind of irons should I consider? I love the looks of p790 and the Ping i500. What do you reckon?

    • @kepler240
      @kepler240 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a 24 handicap, PING Rapture V2's would be something to look into. They're fairly cheap now and I've hit mine since they were new and nothing and I mean NOTHING is easier to hit and are more forgiving. S.S. body, titanium face with a giant hunk of tungsten on the toe/sole...sweeter than YOOHOO. They might look unusual, but just hit one. But don't get the SW or any club lower. They suck for chipping...full swing only.

  • @granty1954
    @granty1954 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review as always. I'm confused with this 'forged' name. I use a forged club as it's made from one block of metal and the bubbles are less giving a softer and more reliable distance/strike. So, how can these hollow clubs be truly forged??? Is it yet another con from manufacturers? Keep up the great work.

    • @banditbaker1675
      @banditbaker1675 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only the face in forged and it is then plasma welded to a cast body. But you need to be careful because forging in itself does not produce a softer feel. The softness comes from the particular grade of carbon steel used, in the i500 Ping are using a much harder steel (which is able to produce a "spring" effect). Also to be strictly accurate, what we interpret as "Soft feel" is actually the acoustics, a soft carbon steel (which has been forged and tempered) will resonate at a much lower frequency than a harder cast steel. It is this sound that we "feel".

    • @granty1954
      @granty1954 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bandit Baker interesting. But any 'spring' effect can only be within the allowance, so does it truly exist?

    • @banditbaker1675
      @banditbaker1675 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed the coefficient of restitution has to conform to the USGA & R&A design criteria. But to answer your question, yes the trampoline effect does exist. When combined with the hollow head designs (filled or unfilled) it produces a higher launch and reduces spin, which combine to produce a "hotter face". In effect they are turning Irons into mini-drivers.

  • @keithn1
    @keithn1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not being funny Micheal but when you showed the face of the i500 it was full of mud, did you clean the face before hitting cos that could bring the spin down and distance up a fair bit, or are the pings just lower spinning, cheers Keith

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keith. It wasn’t mud, just cleaned the face and it was slightly damp in the grooves which made the metal darken slightly. Must admit, it does look like mud.

    • @keithn1

    Michael, what are your feelings about both of these clubs while playing in higher wind scenarios? I am looking seriously at both of these clubs, but they both concern me with controlling distance when hitting knockdown shots into the wind. Example, my course’s 12th hole is a par3 that normally plays to my 6 or 7 iron purely by distance. However, into a 15-25 mph wind, I will typically club up by 2 and hit a 3/4 swing shot which is usually right on the money distance-wise and still has enough spin to hop and sit without running off the back of the green. Are these clubs capable of playing these types of shots???

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What irons you playing currently Todd?

      Michael Newton Golf Mizzy MP53’s with DGs300’s swingweight MOI’d (4i has 1” lead tape, 5i has 2”, etc). Hdcp 6-7. Former HS and college player, but 60+ hr/wk job plus wife and kiddo. Looking for players irons with as much forgiveness and least offset as possible. Oklahoma winds are crazy & routinely 15-25.

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DG's are pretty heavy and low launching, maybe try in something slightly lighter in weight which might help get the spin up a bit if your concerned about it being too low.

    • @PanchoPringles
      @PanchoPringles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Newton Golf I’m actually worried about ball flight being too high for full shots into the wind and spin being too low for shots flighted down into the wind, if that makes sense. I’m playing with nearly 10 yr old irons and woods so the new tech and how it performs in varying wind conditions is somewhat a bit puzzling for me. As a teaching pro, where do you draw the line in terms of teaching full shots into the wind vs the more traditional knockdowns?

      To a large degree I couldn't agree more and it's hard to argue your logic regarding forged blades---it's the best IMHO. However, for a middle-high handicapper or someone who is no more than a weekend golfer, every now and then of course, P790's or i500's will suit them just fine. For me, it would be a teaser club starting out, and then I would be itching to make a swift switch into a set of forged blades......:)
