      @@Down_is_now_up Not a step down as the BBC SO is a very fine orchestra. And anyhoo, when Phil plays he raises the bar for the other section members, very much like the late and very great Maurice Murphy.

    As Salvationists we must be so proud of him and all he has achieved. Hope he will always acknowledge his origins, as he does now. Well done phil on your brilliant and musical playing at the Olympics. A pity you weren't named or given the the visual time that went with the singer. In the cliosing of the Olympics I am sure you moved people to tears with the Dances with Wolves melody - so fitting and so emotional. Hope you are playing in the Paralympics closing ceremony as well and get seen!

    I have been very upset by all the bitching and sniping on my youtube page. Philip was only a teenager when this live video was made he had only just started his studies at the Guildhall School of Music. The performance is not perfect but then again perfect performances are not always musical. Like Saraaa91 I know the family and can confirm that Philip is indeed a humble young man. In his local Salavation Army Band he will often sit on the bottom cornet parts.

    • @EngPheniks

    There is always some dumb "want to be" trumpet player out there who likes to criticize everyone else to boost their own self importance. I have been around the best of the pros and I have found them most often helpful and encouraging, not critical and demeaning. Only the fool opens his mouth and removes all doubt.

    Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But, I and many, many, MANY others are going to strongly disagree with you. The great Jamie Sommerville once said "I have students who on their best day, can just on the same level as I can. The difference is that the difference between their best days and worst days is a lot bigger than it is for me." That's what separates an amateur from a pro. When people can't tell you're having an off day, that's the cut above.

    And believe me Stan and Buddy LOVED my loud blatty screaming high range which CRUSHED Cobb's tiny G. . . and then I learned how to PLAY the trumpet like a man not a boy. At the end of Kentons The Daily Dance I played 15 Double G's in a row and then finished on a Triple D !

    And all I ever said was that he had a ways to go. I put people's names here who had actually done it somplace besides the Salvation Army Band which is a great Organization. But so many young players do not want to acknowledge that A. There ARE young players right now who are better.B. Won't acknowledge that this performance is flawed. C That he has a long way to go LSO or no LSO. LSO is in the top 10 orchestras in the world.Not the top 5. Go listen to Helseth and The Williams Solo Tribute here.

    • @aurahalo9
      @aurahalo9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @TheBerm7
    @TheBerm7 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Okay you want to get nasty ? It was MY choice not to carry my playing to the higher levels. read who I played with and that is not a lie. Now listen to young Cobb - his first SPLAT is 4 seconds in ...and at 23 second he has a total of 3.Cobb has a long way to go He plays with a fine youthful exhuberance. Why do you think he is humble? His very body language screams "digme" - so as a person who was born in 1991 Saraaaa listen and learn.A young playerer I can learn from is Helseth or Tim Morrison.

      "Sir, we're detecting something."
      "Pull up the stats."
      "On it Sir."
      "Dear god."
      "What is it Sir? That - that thing?"
      "It's simply huge!"
      "It's massive!"
      "Wait, I see something!"
      "What Sir?"
      "Holy crap, it looks like writing!"
      "Is that an E?"
      "I think so!"
      "And a G and an-"
      "Sir, I - I think it says EGO."
      Well that's how my brain thought of it anyway. Though seriously dude, you have some problems. What do you mean by "It was MY choice not to carry my playing to the higher levels" like ok do you think that playing an instrument is a competition with the rest of the world, cause it's not. It's about the joy you get from playing, and seeing improvement at the end of the day, and the satisfaction of looking at how far you've come as a person. If you are so insecure about playing that you nitpick the performance of an extremely talented TEENAGER, who just friggin jumped on a stage and double-tounged to high heaven, than you should get professional help.
      Try to be a nice human being for once.

  • @TheBerm7
    @TheBerm7 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay - he's great - i did some homework - never too old to learn I guess - but this performance was sloppy . Allison Balsom doesn't sell as many CD's as PDiddy? Allison Balsom's smallest turd has more talent than all the people in rap music put together and the fact that she is a hot cute blonde may help her classical sales. But the amount of sales doesn't reflect talent.I prefer Tine Helseth in both looks and ablilty.Cobb will improve with age.Even now Hardeberger is fishing out his trumpets

    I'm not impressed. He's a wonderful trumpet player but he's not a cut above any serious college musician or beyond.

    • @theyoungersalvationistrsf7450
      @theyoungersalvationistrsf7450 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BigSwingFace I believe he is at this point a ‘serious college musician’. In the Salvation Army, certainly the corps I’ve been in, we are taught by older musicians in the band. I got lucky in my first year of brass as I had a wonderful brass player, but I, like all of my band, was taught by someone without formal qualifications in Brass. Most of the Regents Hall band will have been brought up within that same tradition and taught in the same way. If it sounds like a college band, well to me (who 2 years ago had never played a brass instrument at all but was head of a renowned Concert Band) that is a compliment and on behalf of those regents hall musicians who have come through the exact same tradition, thank you.

I also had the honor of knowing William Vacchiano, Maurice Andre and l played with Kenton, Rich, and Hampton Clark Terry, Joe Alessi and Bill Watrous as well among MANY other great brass players. Yeah , I am. Good but sloppy. When he gets better than Phil let me know. Yeeesh. You need to listen to a wider range of people. Al Vizzuti worries about Phillp Cobb. Expand your database.
