New 2022 BMW i4 v Porsche Taycan review | The world's best fast EV? | Autocar

  • The Porsche Taycan has become our default choice as an EV sports saloon because, above all else, it still drives like a Porsche.
But might that change with the arrival of the BMW i4, particularly in this fast, four-wheel drive M50 specification, which pits the quickest i4 more or less against the lowliest Taycan.
The BMW i4 M50 makes 536bhp from two electric motors, can go from 0-62mph in 3.9sec and has a 140mph top speed. Its 80.7kWh battery means the range is 259-324 miles and it has a maximum charging speed of 200kW. With a liftback hatch, it's also arguably more practical than the Porsche. The BMW i4 M50 costs £63,905.
This base Porsche Taycan (with Performance Battery Plus) is our favourite variant of our favourite EV. Rear-drive only it has 375bhp (469bhp on overboost) and 484lb ft of torque.
It's slower accelerating than the BMW. The Taycan can go from 0-62mph in 5.4sec but with a two-speed transmission has a higher top speed, 143mph. Its 87.3kWh battery gives it a range of up to 301 miles and it can be charged at up to 270kW. The Taycan costs £76,899 with the Performance Battery Plus.
Which is better? Join Matt Saunders and Matt Prior as they find out.

I understand that as car journalists, you have to really try and extract and explain every single facet of the driving experience of each car, and how one might be better than the other in some esoteric way, but to most people, most of the time, there will be little to tell these kinds of cars apart in terms of their driving. I test drove the Taycan 4S for about 3 hours, as well as the BMW i4 M50 recently, and at the end of the day, they were really very similar in their driving. I did absolutely love the feeling of the Taycan shifting up to second gear with sustained acceleration, and I wish more car manufacturers would add gears to their electric cars. But the sense of acceleration and speed and handling were very similar on the normal road between both cars. I ended up pulling the trigger on the i4 M50, as it has a better boot, way better infotainment, and fully loaded was about £75K. A reasonably speced out Taycan 4S was £110K. Not worth the price difference for me.

I think this is accurate. I still ended up buy in the i4 M50, mainly for the tech differences tbh. The taycan just needed all these extra options for cameras, driving assistance, etc. that put it much further above the price of a loaded m50. The driving feel was better, but not better enough to make the difference for me.

Agree, not sure why the presenters kept going on about full M cars, I thought BMW had been pretty clear this is an M-Performance model. A very one dimensional review really, not much focus on anything other than handling/steering which is a bit odd. I really like the Taycan but it does need a few options (decent wheels, metallic, bigger battery and basics like BOSE to be viable IMO which soon puts it >£80k whereas the i4 is pretty well equipped as standard so almost £20k cheaper, faster and more practical

If I could afford it I would happily have the base Taycan with the longer range battery. We’ve been driving an I-Pace for the past month while our Ioniq EV is in for repairs and we’ve found the performance on offer from the Jag to be substantially quicker than we need in day to day driving. The steering is so informative, making it fun to punt down the country lanes where we live. Based on that experience alone, I believe the base Taycan would be more than enough for us. Keep up the good work guys.

I've test-driven the i4 M50. It bl**dy amazing. Lots of appeals. Fantastic performance. I'd suggest it's 0 to 60 rather 3.2 than 3.9. What I did not like, however. Compared to my 340i the i4 seats ( the ones in my test drive) were hard until you got used to them but even then they were harder than the BMW 340i. Too much of the new v8 infotainment system to talk about here but that is an amazing upgrade from my v6. The Taycan in the real world has much better range. After 20k miles. The Taycan in the summer really can get close to 300 miles with the bigger battery. The Taycan has perfectly weight steering and it inspires confidence. Down the same roads the Taycan allows you to master the road. The BMW just feels like your about to be killed. The Taycan has incredible residuals and the BMW might this year but given time the Porsche will hold its value. Then there’s the charging. I have many time gone from 10% to 85% in 17 minutes! The BMW takes around 40 minutes on the same charger. You get what you pay for here. The Taycan is the better car. The i4 40 is most likely the better i4. This is based on driving experience of the cars not any assumptions. Best value EV is the M3 LR. Best EV is the Taycan!

The Porsche has had exceptionally low depreciation helped over the last 18 months by exceptional long lead times. So it has very low cost to run.

It’s nice to see a comparison of the i4 in M50 guise against a bog standard Taycan for the laugh but let’s be clear-these are not equal competitors on price point. They are similar in gran coupe design but that’s where it ends. A similarly equipped Taycan would be ALOT more money and to be fair would hammer the i4 then. So by comparing apples with apples I think the i4 held up pretty well against a car that in my market is at 150% more expensive in like for like spec. Good to see the review but pointless in another aspect. It’s not a full M car, people say it is and the BMW blurb says something vaguely about it being one but a full M is a heavyweight. This is an M440 competitor. Lots of people comparing it to a model 3 Tesla, close but not the same I 🧐

If Porsche replaced the HVAC screen with manual controls, added manual vents instead of having to move them from the infotainment, and added just a bit more acceleration to get it below 5 seconds... this lowest tier trim would sell like hotcakes... gobbling up some of the demand for the i4 50, Polestar 2 with Performance pakcage, and model 3 Performance. Thing is, it really just isn't a practical all season daily driver, so a lot of people will struggle to justify such a high price. A model 3 Performance, which is a cheaper car than both of these, can run the quarter mile time 1.6 seconds faster than the Porsche. It's also AWD, and has more cargo space. Downside is cheap interior, weak suspension, weak brakes, and not the best cargo space. IMO, while maybe not the best sports car of the bunch, the i4 50 is the best value of the bunch as a daily driver. You'll be happy you have it just as soon as you try to put something big and boxy in the vehicle and utilize the hatch. It's better appointed and has better road compliance than the model 3 but isn't as nimble due to its weight. Less road noise as well. The Porsche doesn't have AWD, isn't as fast, and doesn't have anywhere near the utility.. but it does has a great interior, a great look, and most importantly, it drives the best. As a second household car, sure you could go for the Porsche. In a one car house in a region with snow, it's a tough sell.
Now if I lived in California, or southern Europe, I'd buy that Porsche in a heartbeat.

It's amazing how every liability of conventional ICE vehicles is rationalized as some sort of benefit. Feeling gears shift, is just crude and literally jerky, it's the opposite of the intended function of a luxury car. Tremendous effort has also gone into muffling and modifying the engine noise. A car without a muffler to silence the engine is so bad that it would cause hearing loss for the driver after awhile. Not to mention the absurdity of the ICE car belching poisonous gas out of its tail pipe. Personality indeed. But then the Brits used to try to convince us that the oil leaks in the MG were all a part of the charm as well. Sure, like the charming smell of vomit and sticky floors at the local telephone booth.

I have nothing against EVs and I think they will be great for replacing your everyday runaround diesel hatchbacks, EVs will probably bring a bit more refinement to that class of car and even in luxury limos such as the S Class or the Rolls Royce can benefit from being EVs since their aim is supreme comfort and silence. However and here is the big BUT the same is not true of high performance sport cars such as BMW M cars, Porsches, Lambos, Ferraris, AMGs etc. all of which are cars for the petrolhead, the enthusiast the car nut who want the experience of car which handles great has en engaging gearbox and sounds fantastic all of which add to the driving experience, if you are not a petrol head you won't get it and that's fine.
