Ah! You really got into that a-ha album because of "Slender frame"! When it came out I was a bit surprised that they sounded more like a rock band than a synth band but the style is mature without sounding like generic rock and this and the following "Memorial Beach" are really good. Almost every song is good. From the 2000s, I only found one a two good songs on the following albums and haven't even cared about a-ha the since then. I'm too old to idolize people nowadays and know that the reason I like their music is because of memories from my youth. This song is quite sweet and romantic with the orchestral arragement which makes it sound unique!
yeah, i always appreciate when a-ha uses real drums, real guitar and real bass guitar. they always mix it up with the synth. but when they strip down to the bare organic instruments, it's always a treat. this is a great album with real instruments. i like "memorial beach too". "analogue" is great too, they revisited the real instruments again. i think "analogue is a very underrated a-ha album.
As you know I like the 80s drum machines and synths but the synths on "Minor Earth Major Sky" were to toyish for me (only "Summer moved on" is good on that album). "Analogue" has some good songs but tend to be a bit heavy and dark even for a "serious" guy like me. The "East of the sun" album also uses a lot of drum machines. I dare you to make a cover of "Sycamore Leaves" with the double bass drum😂 Those are all samples and sounds like a drum machine. By that time samples had reached the "uncanny valley" stage where they sounded realistic and clear enough to reveal something was a bit unnatural.
Only "Slender Frame", "I call you name" and "Waiting for her" uses real drums. But unless one is into drums/drum machine the other tracks sound like real drums, mostly.

@@chrismossy9774 yeah, i thought "early morning" was real drums at first but closer listen, it sounded more like a drum machine, especially the toms.
