    Good video. I am a die hard hotswap keyboard user my self because replacing 1 switch is soo much better than having to buy an entire new keyboard if you don't want to pull the keyboard apart and muck around with soldering.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True! It's way easier to change everything and make a new keyboard with only some new pieces, not to comment on the price too.

    This was useful information, now I know what I'll likely need to replace when my cheap mechanical keyboard starts malfunctioning. Looks like if I don't have patience for replacement switch sockets, I can just botch it a bit and solder the switches directly to the board

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      De-soldering and soldering new switches is also an option! It just takes a lot of patience 😜

  • @Saida___

    I would recommend the royal kludge if you are just starting/getting a budget keyboard. Hard swappable, really cheap, easy to dismantle and assemble, easy to tape mode/pe foam.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's good to start testing swithces and keycaps and make the first modifications to the keyboard. As a level entry it's good.
      But in time you'll need something else, like a split keyboard, more custmization options, better ergonomics.... You know, like a Raise 😋

      @DygmaLab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you manage to remove al the solder material, and straighten out the pins, you can 😊
      Just be careful to not bend the pins while inserting them! You can develop a "feel" of when the pins are in the correct holes on the socket, with experience. Go slowly at first, and wiggle them a little before inserting them all the way, to make sure the pins are in the holes. With time, you will be very quick 😉

      Hi Vuk,
      Those are called "Switch testers" they are sold on Amazon, Aliexpress, Bangood, KBD fans... almost any huge online retailers sells them. You just have to pickup one that contains the switches you want to test.
      One final piece of advice, if you want to test the sounds of the swiches, remember one detail: since the testing box is not a real keyboard, the sound might be different than the actual one. The circumstances, like the keycaps, stabilizers and materials of the keyboard might change the resulting sound.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the K68 is hot swappable. In that case, you have to dissasemble, desolder the switches, and solder new ones.
      This will take quite a while and requires tools like the solderer and the solder remover.

      Not really. Switches are only part of the equation. You've got build quality, the PCB can have white LEDs, RGB LEDs, per-key RGB (like our board) or no light at all. Then there's the keycaps, the form factor, the layout... there's so many things that can change in a keyboard besides the switches 😅

    hi , I want to ask, is my pcb is dead ? I have corsair k63 tkl keyboard one day I want to play game with my big 55inch TV so I plug my pc to the tv and then I turn the pc on, after I see the windows 10 login screen I plug the keyboard and mouse but I can't type (the led on with animation), then I tested the keyboard with a laptop , it didn't work and I also install the corsair CUE app , the software did not detect the keybord. So... my keyboard pcb is dead ? is that possible connect pc to big tv can damage my keyboard (something like electrical short) ?

    I came here after a single switch broke on my soldered keyboard. Replacing that single switch was an absolute nightmare.

      @@DygmaLab I bought a replacement keyboard today, immediately after seeing this video.
      Previous keyboard fell off the desk and broke the switch + within the cap. Had to replace the switch and botched that, therefore the ESC key no longer worked. Keyboard is now useless.

    It's my first time buying mechanical keyboard that has unfamiliar brand (or I'm the only one who doesn't know them) and since I was excited to have my own mechanical keyboard and the price is also fit in my budget I didn't give it a thought and just bought it right away and the worst part is the seller doesn't even have any knowledge about the mechanical keyboard which is one of the red flags that I should have considered and now I'm confuse if my mechanical keyboard is hot swappable or not and also the keyboard that I bought destroyed my motherboard I don't know if its caused by the mechanical keyboard or its just a coincidence but I'm buying a new one now (which is supposed to be my budget for my upcoming birthday this week that I saved for two months) but what I'm really afraid of is that if I plug the mechanical keyboard again will it destroy my new motherboard? As a first time user of mechanical keyboard this is really a horrible experience 😟

      @@DygmaLab The brand that I bought is Fenrir Vikings (I can't find the model number I'm sorry) I'm not familiar with this brand and I never heard about this brand before, I wish that I make some research about mechanical keyboards and recommended brands. I also tried to consult my motherboard to the experts and they said that there was nothing wrong with my motherboard and the main source of the problem is the power supply unit which supprises me because before we go to that shop me and brother tried to use 2 power supplies to see if my cpu will work (the mechanical keyboard is still plug in at the cpu) but it didn't work and we also tried to ground the PSU and it works that is why we come to the conclusion that maybe the main problem is the motherboard. so back to the experts they said that maybe the mechanical keyboard is grounded and we should ask for help to the the shop who we bought the mechanical keyboard if they can do something about the keyboard or find the main source of what is causing the problem.
      PS. I'm really sorry for asking too many questions, I just really don't know what to do. Thank you in advance

    • @Atanskie24
      @Atanskie24 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though I'm not Dygma, I would just like to throw out a helping hand[lol]. So long as your the type of switches you're about to use are the same with the keyboard's, it should be good to go. I mean, if your keyboard has optical switches, then, you're pretty much stuck to changing switches which are only optical. But then again, if you have a hot-swap mechanical keyboard, you'll have more variety of switches to choose from.

    All USB (and even AT) keyboards are hot-swappable. Sounds like the creator here is confused between "hot-swappable" and socketed. Nearly all CPUs are installed in sockets and can be removed and replaced without soldering, but are definitely not hot-swappable.

    This is a bit pedantic, but I'm gonna say it anyway: pretty much all keyboards are hot-swappable, since you can unplug them (or unpair them) from a computer and plug them back in (or wirelessly pair them) to a different computer or device without needing to turn those devices off or replace the device entirely. Not all keyboards, however, have hot-swappable switches (which is the topic of this video). To summarize: calling a keyboard "hot-swappable" is not the same as calling a keyboard "with hot-swappable switches".

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're right. Hot-swappable switches or hot-swappable sockets is the precise way to refer to it. It's just that most people use that expression.
