Study: Infant Reshaping Helmets May Not Be Worth It

  • When it's bedtime for baby, pediatricians say laying them on their back is best. Because more babies are sleeping on their backs, the rate of SIDS has dropped by 50 percent, but a common side effect from sleeping that way is the flattening of the head. A new study suggests, however, that spending the money on a reshaping helmet may not be worth it. CBS 2's Vanessa Murdock reports.

I remember growing up and seeing this kid with a pointy back head as though he was always laying on his side of head as baby and was never turned

    Utter nonsense.
Babies heads develop over time and naturally take on a normal shape.
These places just want you to spend thousands of dollars... they're running a business.
People did not buy helmets for their kids 20 years ago, people in poor countries do not buy helmets for their babies, and yet everyone has a normal shaped head.

20 years ago, everyone was putting their babies to sleep on their belly, that's why they didn't have plagiocephaly. But there was more SIDS.

In a New Zealand book of case studies on SIDS it is interesting to note that a high proportion of cot deaths happened at six weeks, three months and six months. Do you see the same pattern that I do? The other interesting thing is that SIDS is almost unheard of in those under six weeks. It used to be unheard of in those under two months, before they changed the immunisation schedule.
I continued researching. Here’s a quote from the book, Vaccination: The Hidden Facts by Ian Sinclair. "…We began recording breathing patterns of babies after vaccination. The results of these recordings were presented to the 2nd immunisation Conference, held in Canberra, 27-29 May 1991. We demonstrated that microprocessor records of babies’ breathing after DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) injections reveal a pattern of flare-ups of Stress-Induced Breathing closely following the dynamics of adreno-cortical activity in an individual under stress and as observed and recorded by Selye.
We also demonstrated that flare-ups of Stress-Induced Breathing in babies after administration of the DPT vaccine occur characteristically on certain days even though the amplitude of the flare-ups varies from child to child. For 70 babies who succumbed to cot death, although babies could die on any day after DPT injection, there were significantly more deaths on the days that closely correlated with flare-ups of Stress-Induced Breathing after DPT injections… Yet, babies may and do die for up to 25 or more days after vaccination, and still as a direct consequence of the toxic effects of the vaccines… Our conclusion is that if vaccination were to be suspended, the cot death rate would be at least halved."
Sara is now six years and occasionally she still ‘forgets’ to breathe in her sleep. She still needs to be monitored every night. Sometimes she stops breathing long enough that she cannot walk properly the next morning.

It's mainly for aesthetics. It doesn't affect neurologically but can affect how they look, which can be detrimental to their self-esteem as teenagers or adults.
I have brachiocephaly, and I'm in my 40s. I'm conscious about it whenever I tie my hair up in a ponytail because it's so flat from behind. My son had plagiocephaly because he favoured his left side more. I caught it on time and bought one of those baby-shaping memory foam pillows with a hole at the back. Within a few days, a lump was forming where the flat part was. Within a month, his head was round again. No helmet needed.

100% worth it. These things are priceless and anything saying otherwise is bad reporting. Ask the parents who use them. With insurance, they aren’t even expensive. Mine was free and my babies head went from not being a head (it was hard to look at) to being a normal head.

Not with my daughter she has erbs pasly and torticollis that she got during birth because she got stuck and she favored her right side because she has erbs pasly and torticollis on her left side! So before you assumes lazy parents or car seats it could be medical reasons!

It's not actually carseats causing it and if I were you I would really discuss it with a pediatrician to better educate yourself. Babies skulls are still soft and it has to do with placement of sleep and where mom is. They will turn their heads naturally towards mom. That's who comforts them, who they see most, who they wake up to. Also, it does not mean you are a bad parent.

What a cruel, ignorant comment. My baby was literally never placed in a car seat. I wore him in a sling, did tummy time religiously since he was 3 weeks old, started physiotherapy at 4 months (my own initiative since he didn't seem interested in rolling over - the doctor wasn't concerned). He still developed a very severe deformity. There is nothing wrong with him otherwise - he is just a large, calm baby who started rolling over late. It happens.
