Looking at the deformation of the latices under impact made me think that this could be the next big thing in vehicle safety features. Plastic/aluminum latices that deform to slow the transfer of collision impulses that also reduce total weight. Amazing!
I think self driving cars could also be a huge improvement to vehicle safety!

University of Nebraska-Lincoln already uses quite a few of these matrices and lattices in designing guard rails which the NTSB evaluates. (Also makes the foam barriers at race tracks)
Destin, how I wish something like this was available when I was an undergraduate student. I'm 59 now, & a very successful regional marketing manager for a process control valve company. Your show feeds the brain every episode. Keep it up. Good luck with your PhD efforts.

I'm personally most interested in the ion thrusters because my PhD was in computational fluid dynamics of rarefied gases. In other words, that cool looking "glowing exhaust cloud" coming out of the ion thrusters in a vacuum chamber at 5:14 can be simulated with software that I wrote (CQMOM). Also, space exploration!

I dropped engineering school and told a professor I befriended I'd be back when the time was right. 7 years went by and during those years I became an avionics technician with an FAA Airframe+Powerplant mechanics certification working for one of the largest aircraft manufactures in the world.
I've been going back and fourth on returning to school to finish my degree ever since, watching this has solidified my feelings that going back to school at the age of 27 is the right thing to do.
I've always enjoyed your channel, but I'll remember this video.

Kerbal space program (KSP) is a game where you can run your own space program and learn some orbital physics and rocket science such as Delta v and thrust to waight ratio. Ion thrusters are highly Efficient but have low thrust (power) I recommend Kerbal Space Program. It’s on play station and xbox and computor. I got it from steam. I hope that helped.

I've had two of the research professors on this video for classes at UAH. Dr. Xu is one of my favorite teachers I've had at UAH. The research that goes on here is crazy!
This is what I really admire about you. You're all about learning and teaching and pushing your horizons. I'd love to go back and get my doctorate but it's just not something I can do right now and honestly I envy you that you do have that freedom to do so.
We need more people like you. Not just those that want to learn but are excited about it.

I believe that it's not a lot of material being expelled. so the force or danger isnt noticable. Like low voltage (not enough to get through skin) and not hot because the there isnt enough stuff to transfer heat to his fingers.

That is cold atmospheric plasma created under high pressure low temperature (law of thermodynamics) to sustain the plasma beam
The resultant beam is around 300 k temperature and can be modified as per requirements

That lattice structure deformed oblongly would be interesting to know the strength added by a thin perimeter shell.
I was thinking about that too, however, scaling up... an entire axis would be filled with more material anyways. With that said, something tells me the two planar axis areas that are left won't just be exposed material either. The results would be interesting nonetheless. The addition of other objects and materials such as shells, could create interesting macro structures. I'll have to create and run my own computational models now, I'm curious.

Destin, I just wanted to say thank you for posting this video (I've been following your channel for years). As a Mechanical Engineering undergrad, who is almost done in a few semesters, I've been looking at different topics that I would like to pursue a MS/PhD in. These are AMAZING areas of research that I would love to be a part of. It sounds like UA-H is a place I will consider applying for.
Congrats Destin! Obviously you will make a great PhD candidate. My favorite professors could take a complicated idea and dumb it down so everyone could understand, you do that all day long! Tomorrow I graduate from my undergraduate career and I am heading straight into industry, yet for the past two months I have wanted to work on a masters and eventually a doctorate more than ever. The idea that someone like you, who's managing a career, a TH-cam channel, and a family with kids can find the time and drive to pursue a masters gives me comfort knowing that it never really is too late. Very cool opportunities Destin is giving out. I have a few words of caution for the prospective undergraduate: make sure you are getting some form of recognition for your work. This could take the form of being included in the author lists for any published research, or (more likely for undergrad ) giving poster presentations at conferences. These are the building blocks that future employers or graduate schools are going to be looking for -- they want proof you can work *and* then present your findings! Ask these questions before you commit your time to someone else's research:
"What research journals do you publish in? How often?"
"Do you ever include undergraduates in the list of authors?"
"If I work for three years but you publish in five, will I still be an author?"
"Can I take the research results I did here and present them at a poster session?"
"What conferences have poster sessions I can attend? Are they yearly conferences?"
"Will you help me create a poster or am I on my own? Will the grant money that is paying me also pay for my expenses when presenting?"

A question more out of genuine curiosity and not meant to be offensive, but why are so many researchers working in labs foreign-born (i.e. not born in the U.S.)?
@John Doe wtf, of course there is such a thing as a racist question. Also what are you talking about with "foreigners taking technologies that cost the us taxpayer"? Foreign students contribute money in unsubsidized school fees (they don't get loans because they pay up front) and earning a degree isn't "taking technology", that doesn't even make any sense. Another thing you have wrong is the idea that foreign students have priority for places over US citizens. If there are any reserved spots based on ethnicity they would be for US students.
You just sound like a bigot trying to find any reason to be anti-foreigner, regardless of whether what you're saying has any basis in reality.
To answer the original post: it's because a higher percentage of foreigners in the US are students than the average US person because otherwise they wouldn't have been able to get visas in the first place.
John Doe There are no incentives given by US government. Infact the fee per semester of most Universities is thrice the amount an in-state person pays.

This is so dope! I just finished my first year of undergrad research in a biomechanics lab at Virginia Tech and i absolutely love it! This lab seems a bit more funded lol but its really cool to be involved with the same vein of work as these guys.

I worked as a researcher after I graduated. It's a good feeling to know you have changed the World, even in such tiny ways as a paper.
I visited UAH when I was at Redstone for Army EOD school. I went to SIU for physics when I got out and I'm glad I did because they have great undergrad research opportunities.
Good for you for promoting these research programs; it's a little lame that some people have to wait until grad school to participate in research.

It's funny how the majority of doctors that work on American universities (at least the ones that are more qualified in very specific fields) are foreigners. Every time I see a video of engineering, physics, mathematics, robotics, etc that's filmed in an American university 80% of the time the teacher/expert/doctor and also the top students who usually work with them in projects are from other countries (a lot of asians and indians). It's weird for me because here it's the other way around, we have a lot of foreigners trying to learn from local scientists. Can someone explain why this happens in the USA? Just being curious since I've never been in the USA. PS.: Sorry for my English BTW.
once you get your degree from a University you have a choice. Stay for a masters and maybe PhD for who knows how long, or go to industry and make more than 80,000 a year (Depends on your major). The reason a lot of foreigners are in higher education is because it is difficult for them to get hired by american companies.

I've always felt that PhD is a waste of time and resources, *unless you want to do solely academical research...* For the time and effort put into a doctorate, the bonuses to life don't seem that great. I've heard about times when people were denied a job position for being overqualified. Though I'm European so the context may be different in the US.
EDIT: I wanna stress out that PhD is great if you really love science and want to work in the academical sphere - that is do exactly as the doctors in the video do. I was addressing an attitude I came across about hoarding degrees as much as it's possible, which is silly to say the least. PhD requires an immense investment of time and effort, so it's better to think it through thoroughly.
Tomáš Karlík PhD isn't meant to be done to get a better job. Whatever one had to learn in an institute environment is done in bachelor's and Master's itself. PhD is meant for those who truly love doing research. For jobs, PhD might actually decrease chances of getting one, as you'd be overqualified for most jobs
Yeah, you sort of just rephrased what I've already said, albeit in a milder tone... but sure, from what I've heard, it is precisely for one thing only - academical research.
Depends on what you are looking for in life I guess. It seems you genuinely dislike learning, thinking and doing research, and see it as only a chore to earn money or get higher up in a corporate ladder. In that case, yes please stay away from academia.
Doing a PhD is supposed to be intrinsically worthwhile, i.e. it should be exciting and satisfying as an activity in your life. It shouldn't be about getting a better job later (being a PhD is already a job, at least in many European countries), and it should only be about career opportunities insofar as those careers are also intrinsically enjoyable to do.
If your only aim in life is to earn money doing jobs you don't enjoy doing, I'd say **that** is the greatest waste of your time.
I don't like how the school system works here, that's true, even though I love my little corner of science. The reason I brought this up wasn't as much about me just bitching (even though I phrased myself rather poorly) as it was about a certain attitude that I came across - that the higher the degree, the better - which is obviously against the logic of PhD. I really didn't mean that it's impractical _at all_ (if I ignore that academic salaries are barely livable here and other social implications), so please don't take it as an attack or something. Maybe I should edit the original comment to reflect that a bit better.
I _am_ one of those people who don't like school and study really just because of social/family/job market reasons. As for my aims, I really don't know. Using those ion thrusters in KSP is almost as exciting as watching paint dry.
