It is my favorite album of all time. I never thought it would be the first time I listened to it. I have to say that its complexity and its unique aspect makes it for me.
Loved ‘old’ Crimson but 80s Crimson was my favourite line up.
Bravo. I was one of the kids listening to the firsat Crimson record, with Greg Lake singing, who went on to ELP.. But Discipline was a whole new world. I saw them in London- Amazing.
awesome video! i'm 14 years old and really into king crimson. crimson had a lot of great superlineups at fripp's initiative, and it shows in discipline for sure. the album has a lot of variety too which i think is so reflective of the group. i loved the concept of Thela Hun Gingeet and the fact that they were actually able to write a song inspired by the NY experience and incorporate some of those audio recordings into it (which was probably a really new and interesting concept in the early 80s). Also loved what you said about Kind of Blue, and focusing on only the coltrane parts. Such a great way to listen to music and general, and especially Discipline. Crazy you had a date with Adrian's daughter too! Wow!
I didn't expect to write such a long comment responding to what you had to say, but i really appreciate your analysis and enthusiasm about the music you enjoy
This is a sublime album for me. I love all three albums from that era, but while "Beat" is the most "accessible" and "Three of a Perfect Pair" is the most dense of the three, "Discipline" is the perfect middle point in that regard.
I saw them at Manchester Poly, support band The Lounge Lizards, when they were still calling themselves Discipline. I think it was their 4th or 5th gig.
Still the best concert I've ever attended.
could you imagine how it feels when you put this one for this the first time
This was the first King Crimson Album I ever listen to. From there I was hooked. To this day one of my favorite albums.
A truly classic album and one of my all-time favorites. I saw KC in NYC in 1984 on the Three Of A Perfect Pair tour and, to this day, it is the best concert I ever saw. I was simply jaw-dropped that they could play the music from the three albums live.
A couple of things you didn't mention that I find interesting... Belew, of course, played in the Fran Zappa band for a couple of years prior to going over to Bowie. In fact, Bowie heard Belew at a Zappa show and, basically, "stole" Belew from Zappa. Frank was not happy with Bowie. Fripp had done work in the mid-late 70s with Peter Gabriel. Fripp produced Gabriel's second solo album and contributed with the song Exposure (also on Fripp's solo album). And, Fripp also had a rendezvous with the Talking Heads which shows up on their Fear Of Music album. It was around the time Belew was involved with the Heads but I don't think thay's where the two met. Lastly, not sure how many people realize that Bruford toured with Genesis - post-Gabriel - on the Trick Of The Tail Tour, between tenures with KC. These guys get around!
Ah yes. I was just starting to dig into 70s progrock (in the early 80s) and finding out more about earlier Genesis, Yes, and ELP, and for some reason, I picked up Discipline. it was my first King Crimson album, and I was really blown away by how different it was. It really pushed me even further into more intricate, mesmerizing music (not exactly mathrock, but before mathrock became a thing). 80s King Crimson is really its own kind of thing that nobody else really seems to do or have done.
Excellent. Truly a ground breaking album.
You forgot that Fripp formed, recorded an album, and toured with League of Gentlemen (Fripp, Sara Lee, Barry Andrews, Jonny Toobad), an new wavy instro band just before Discipline. Good stuff.
I had the luck to discover King Crimson in '79, and swiftly bought all their earlier records. Then, to my surprise, the new King Crimson appeared. Got Discipline the day it came out and saw them on that tour, where they played the entire Discipline album, plus Neurotica, Lark's Tongues pt II, and Red!
I totally was going to mention the League of Gentlemen (and his work with Daryl Hall). I spaced it. I see a Robert Fripp feature in the near future.
as much as i love the early KC albums, the three early 80's albums, discipline, beat and three of a perfect pair, I believe are my favorite.... What record store did you work at? I was employed by Record Bar in the 80's... nice shirt, luv me some gang of four
I worked at Turtles in Atlanta (4 locations 1981 - 1987).
If you do a review, please make sure you have the personel right. "This album was King Crimson's first following a seven-year hiatus. Only band co-founder and guitarist Robert Fripp and drummer Bill Bruford remained from the previous incarnation."
I hope you include the Sex Pistols. They broke it all open for the next 20 years.
I have a feeling that Never Mind the Bollocks will make the 100!
