I really enjoyed The Richard Boone Show. (I was just a kid at the time, of course). He (or the producers, perhaps) had gathered a group of really excellent actors who appeared in a different drama each week. It was like a repertory company on TV. No ongoing stories or characters. I guess the general audience preferred seeing actors in the same characters every week. It was a great show!
I’m sure he wasn’t pleased by the gutless way they handled canceling the series, but he’d been in the business long enough, to probably not be overly surprised, and I doubt very much that he carried an emotionally crippling resentment over it to the end. But everyone has weak links, and can be prone to suffer from any number of addictions. But it seems to me, that there were plenty of things that could have been said about him, to honor his memory, rather than try to tarnish it, and drag the memory of a man through the mud, who can no longer defend himself. And he did an excellent job, with his acting talents, of portraying an honorable man, of bravery and virtues; And i’d venture to say that he probably influenced an unknown number of young people, of the value of living a life, in knowing the difference between good & evil, and defending people who can’t defend themselves.

Boone is well known among those around in his prime! He was great in big Jake and in Hombre with Paul Newman. However, fame is fleeting... the public will always remember John Wayne, Elvis etc however, The kids have already forgotten Bobby Darrin and Sandra Dee... there are tons of great talents but by the time their grandchildren are grown they’re usually mostly forgotten
Of course, Richard Boone was treated poorly and disrespected. I wish he would have channeled his anger into his work and directed and acted more because 'Have Gun, Will Travel' is one of my favorites of all time. I still watch him daily. His Shakespearean touch in the show was what I loved and the humor on some episodes was the best. I miss seeing him in all the great westerns he was in and wish he would have found happiness. Thank you, Richard, for getting me hooked on Westerns, you were one of the best.
Boone had the same likeliness as many men who at the starting Gate have little trouble with managing a troupe which always seems amassed around him Yes after win after win in either business or sport after the first loss He finds himself paralyzed in Fear usually once you again find balance in fluid motion it disappears
In summary: Richard Allen Boone died in the year 1981 at age 63. Given the fact that Richard Boone had some criticisms of the occupational hazards which around 99% of us human beings experience for around 47 years or so I doubt that he is feeling angry about his show getting cancelled now nor do I believe that he died with a lot of hate in his heart. Unless of course that none of us have heard about anywhere so far that he in some nursing home before his death was often in the habit of trying to beat up nurses who were only trying to help care for him or whatever. Before the day he died like many other people did back then and now too he said that, "Most television was a waste of time". In addition like around 99% of people back then and today too he was prone to be complaining about existing occupational hazards only the elite have to work around. Now long after his death some people are tarnishing his reputaion in this world only because he was a public figure whose voice got more attention than those elitist people had back then and because his persona continues to get more than some elitist people today too. Is that only because they see themselves as being robot like in comparison while projecting about who Richard Boone was based on all of his past doings instead or what?
He died at home in st augustine florida With his wife Claire and a nurse in attendance..he was cared for ..and in a lot of pain..he had throat cancer..and pneumonia. 1981..at age 63. He was in a very weakened physical state. His son Peter mentions this in a bio about him. He was indeed a great talent..he gave so much..and leaves behind a lot of wonderful work on film and TV. As for tv..have gun will will travel is his masterpiece
I will always love Richard boone he was an amazing actor and I certainly do not blame him for how Hollywood did to him he would really be upset by today's Hollywood standards Hollywood will always be a crooked place r.i.p Mr Richard boone you are loved and missed and never forgotten and getting ready to watch one of your movies against a crooked sky soon
I'm not exactly partial to westerns but Have Gun Will Travel was a cut above the run of the mill western. Each episode invited you to look below the surface to find the hidden meaning. Mr. Boone took these principles and applied them to The Richard Boone Show. He approached television as a fine art rather than a mere device for selling products and controversial issues. I wish The Richard Boone Show was available on DVD. I'd love to have a copy of it for my collection. They don't make TV shows like this anymore.
Did they give him a raw deal? Not really, his show was making money and as far as NOT being told, well, that seems to be standard operating procedure in Hollywood, so he shouldn't have taken it personally, although most would.
The network used him and did not care either way about the quality of the show or man. NBC should have been professional about and told him but did not. Richard Boone cared about the artist and people.
The late author Hunter S. Thompson said it best: "The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason. Which is more or less true. For the most part, they are dirty little animals with huge brains and no pulse. There is also a negative side." - Hunter S. Thompson in his book: Generation of Swine - Tales of Shame and Degradation in the ’80s.
The character Paladin and Richard's portrayl of him is unlike any other from that era of TV westerns. Palidin had a great combination of intelligence, wisdom, humor, sophistication and toughness.
To me, Richard Boone was a bit bored during his last year on "Have Gun, Will Travel", and looked like he wanted to be in Movies, which did not pan out for him. I suppose when he saw the skyrocketing career of Steve McQueen who went from TV to Movie Fame, I could see why. Definitely, Boone was a better Actor, but McQueen skyrocketed. James Garner called McQueen "A Poseur and not an Actor", which you could not accuse Boone of. In the end, Boone appeared very tired and run down while playing against John Wayne in those Cowboy Movies at the end of both of their Careers. Wayne appeared more Fit, even though he really wasn't, but Boone was down a lot more.
Richard was a special character but unfortunately type cast able actor. Networks & Studios have little room for heart on their accounting ledgers. Goodwill is nonexistent for individuals like Richard. I still love him because he was loved by my Grandfather until his death in 1971.
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
A hell of a nice man. I met him on one of his promo tours while Have Gun Will Travel was still on TV. He actually stopped to be courteous to a small fan of his in the crowd (namely me).
The way I heard the story it was his fight with Jack Webb over Hec Ramsey that left both men bitter and upset. This is why Ramsey was cut short. Richard Boone also had ideas about his show he made called Kona Coast in which he wanted Jack Lord to star about Hawaii cops. Powers that be turned the show into Hawaii Five O but they kept Jack Lord as the star.
What the hell no mention of The Big Sleep remake with Robert Mitchum or John Wayne Flicks Big Jake and John Wayne's last flim the Shootist? Or his two seasons run on NBC in the 70s as Heck Ramsey. Real sort of D grade research on this video WOW!
I find it very interesting that he felt so angry with NBC and still went back to work for them in the 70's in the brief turn of the century series HEC RAMSEY. Wonder what the full story is there?
Canceling a show that has shockingly low ratings makes perfect sense to me. From your report, it sounds as though it could’ve been handled in a better manner.
The Richard Boone Show was poorly scheduled by NBC. It aired on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 p.m. Eastern Time against a more popular CBS sitcom, Petticoat Junction. It also had a built-in disadvantage in that it was an anthology show with no central character and an unevenness in the programming. As an anthology show it lacked a central theme unlike the successful Twilight Zone or the earlier Suspense. Unfortunately the cancellation of the Show by NBC was a turning point in Mr. Boone's personal life and ambitions as a actor.
When writer Leonard Freeman was looking for a lead actor to star in his new series Hawaii Five-O, he turned to his good friend Richard Boone to play the part of McGarrett. Having already done a series for CBS (Kona Coast) Boone decided to turn it down.
Man if he was highly critical of television programming way back then, it isn't hard to guess what he would say about it now. It's a hell of a lot worse than it used to be.
RB was a great actor, and great guy. He said it best about the Hollywood crew, 'they were cynical, and couldn't care less'. Brilliant call. Hence, I don't own a TV, or go to the movies to watch the detritus they now produce.
I doubt it was the cancellation that hurt him as much as the failure to meet with him face to face about it. After a career of 45 years in community theatre, I can see his point easily. Face to face, I can understand, email (now) or in print (then) shows a considerable lack of respect. When I've had to fire people, I always did it face to face.
For TV western heroes, I rate Richard Boone #1 (Have Gun Will Travel), followed by James Arness (Gunsmoke) and Chuck Conners (Rifleman). For Western movie heroes, I rate (of course) Clint Eastwood #1, followed by Charles Bronson and Yul Brynner.
The realization that Boone had should not have been such a great surprise to him because that's always been the nature of Hollywood. Wisdom often comes on the back of a harsh and hard learned lesson. If you play with a snake long enough you will get bit!
Have Gun will Travel and movies were great. The show went two seasons. He was perfect bully, in Paul Newman Hombre. Nobody likes to lose a job, but sometimes new doors open for you. He was always working! Richard Boone died at of head, neck, throat cancer from smoking a great deal. He died at 63 years old. Richard Boone was not married long each marriage.

Richard definitely got a raw deal from NBC...after all, "Have Gun, Will Travel," was a "well rated" spot that caused substantial profits.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
It goes from "Movie Magic" to "Movie Tragic" in Hollywierd! Who woulda thunk?
He was like magic in Have Gun Will Travel and Big Jake, loved to watch him act!
He was an actual descendant of Daniel Boone
You mean the pioneer?
@@magicalgold010 Who else?
Fess Parker was my relative. Lol. For real though.
According to his obit he was "a seventh-generation nephew of the pioneer Daniel Boone."
@@magicalgold010 descendant of squire boone daniels brother
"Died with a strong hate" According horror movies he will return as a vengeful spirit to those who have wronged him
If only that were true. I would love to come back after I die. And haunt as many horrible people, who wronged me during my life time as I could. In other words, come back as another evil 😈 politician!.........
No, no he didn't die with astrong hate! He despised the unjust, cowardly no tallent's unjust / unfair treatments. The yellow cowards were and still are fullfilled with revenge, hate, an mony hunger / greed oh and monipulative feelings agains others. That, tha, that's what he hated. Richard loved life, gave his tallent, according to those days. What did them critiques give to the public = - 0 + Z E R O + VIOLANCE. OH AND THEY WERE WASHING ALWAYS THEIR HANDS. = Tha's what Richard hated / dissapproved of, yes, and the TVwill be the past's he was / is right.
Yes I do believe that nbc done Mr Boone a raw deal by not even letting him know that his show was being axed they are the blame for the way he felt Shame on you nbc news Richard we love and miss you I still watch have gun will travel on me tv r.i.p beautiful angel
Yes didn't even tell him he read in a paper
Oh yes, I remember the Richard Boone show and I liked it; I liked a lot. Many of the shows that NBC ran canceled them because, somebody higher up didn't like the show. With me it got to be the adage; the better the show the quicker the cancellation.
Us too! We're very happy to know that you're a fan. What other types of video would you like to see?
A thespian with convictions who stood up for what he believed in.He certainly was right about TV.It's too bad he let It consume him.Thank God for Richard Boone and PBS.
If he new what tv is like now days he would roll over in his grave.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
Yes Vicky N. - Now these days, there are no NEWS, no films. no historical movies, no classics, and no religious films. Hey, what is in the TV? Violance, I kill you. you kill me. . . distorted News, sitcomes? Really, why can't Hollywood femake those amazing films of various different kinds. They are lazy, no tallented acters / actresses even less certified dirrectors / producers and writers. Yes Richard Boon seen this coming, way, way ahed already. I definetally am on his side and I would of have hade, the identical feelings and emotions as he did. Oh, and another thing, to be learified. He didn't have hate in him, W R O N G! The HOLLYWOOD and the than NBC graetly misstreated him unjustly. In other words, Richard was ve - ery greatly dissappointed in the cruel treatments he received instead of recognition of his tallents.
I fell in love with Richard Boone when I was a young girl. I have always loved him.
We're a big fan of Richard too! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Boone is well known among those around in his prime! He was great in big Jake and in Hombre with Paul Newman. However, fame is fleeting... the public will always remember John Wayne, Elvis etc however, The kids have already forgotten Bobby Darrin and Sandra Dee... there are tons of great talents but by the time their grandchildren are grown they’re usually mostly forgotten
The hell with Hollywood
Yes they did, Boone was a great actor especially as a tough guy! NBC should have shown him only the best their biggest stars received.
I watch Have gun will travel, Every morning, Monday- Friday.Even though the Episodes are reruns..I only started watching him 3 years ago. 💙💙💙
One of my favorite authors Elmore Leonard RIP called him the best actor for Hombre RIP Palidan.
Very interesting, thank you so much for sharing this info about Richard. What other types of video would you like to see?
Hombre; was in my opinion, the finest movie ever made !
Boone had the same likeliness as many men who at the starting Gate have little trouble with managing a troupe which always seems amassed around him Yes after win after win in either business or sport after the first loss He finds himself paralyzed in Fear usually once you again find balance in fluid motion it disappears
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
When I was a kid I had a belt w/ holsters with Paladin cap guns. Lol
Yes Richard Boone is one of my favorite actors matter-of-fact as I'm giving you this comment I'm watching Have Gun Will Travel at this very moment
He died at home in st augustine florida
With his wife Claire and a nurse in attendance..he was cared for ..and in a lot of pain..he had throat cancer..and pneumonia. 1981..at age 63. He was in a very weakened physical state. His son Peter mentions this in a bio about him. He was indeed a great talent..he gave so much..and leaves behind a lot of wonderful work on film and TV. As for tv..have gun will will travel is his masterpiece
He'd turn over in his grave if he knew what was on TV these days.
Damn right ! Not only has TV and movies have gone down the drain, but music in general has suffered as well. Rest In Power Mr. Boone !
I guess that's just what the profession, is all about. I loved Him 😍, in "Have Gun Will Travel" I would love to have seen Him in more movies !!!!
We're glad to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
My step mother believed Paladin's first name was Wire.
Boone was a combat veteran of WW II , Pacific ,aircraft carriers, naval aircraft gunner...
Thank you so much for sharing this info about Richard. Much appreciated ❤
Here's my favorite channel with a new video thanks guys!!
You're very much welcome! We're glad to know that you love our video. If we may ask, what other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
One of my favorite westerns is Hec Ramsey. It was an early version of CSI type program.
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
When I was a kid I thought his name was Wire Palladin when I read his business card LOL
We're a big fan of Robert too! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
When I was a kid, I really liked "Have Gun - Will Travel".
Us too! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
@@FactsVerse I was just a young boy at the time, I remember the "Show" as a whole, but don't remember individual episodes.
NBC they were unbelievable in the 70s
I delike like how they canceled Star Trek!
Wow! What talent he had. But Hollywood is cut throat.
Richard was a special character but unfortunately type cast able actor. Networks & Studios have little room for heart on their accounting ledgers. Goodwill is nonexistent for individuals like Richard. I still love him because he was loved by my Grandfather until his death in 1971.
We agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
Hec Ramsey was my favorite show and Mystery movie. He was so talented. NBC chews and spits talent.
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I love Richard Boone,As Paladin. I watch him every morning, Monday - Friday..
A hell of a nice man. I met him on one of his promo tours while Have Gun Will Travel was still on TV. He actually stopped to be courteous to a small fan of his in the crowd (namely me).
Raw deal all around. He deserved better.
Not an industry known for kindness or consideration..why would he be surprised ??
The way I heard the story it was his fight with Jack Webb over Hec Ramsey that left both men bitter and upset. This is why Ramsey was cut short. Richard Boone also had ideas about his show he made called Kona Coast in which he wanted Jack Lord to star about Hawaii cops. Powers that be turned the show into Hawaii Five O but they kept Jack Lord as the star.
Gratuitous to mention marital problem... Alcohol and others painfully obvious...but his faithful wife could do without this being dredged up...
Most people won't notice, or so they hope.
My little brother rode around the room on an imaginery stick horse while the Paladin credits and music would play! We are in our mid 70s now!
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
He was one of my top western actors, loved his Have Gun Will Travel series.😊
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
I ❤ ❤ ❤ Richard Boone as Paladin, with a passion that will never wane, fade or burn out. Too bad Hollywood was so unfaithful & ungrateful to him.
As Paladin, he demonstrated serious talent. It's a shame that no one came forward with a suitable replacement.
Yes. I love his acting abilities. I watched Have Fun with Travel every day. Or on Cable
I find it very interesting that he felt so angry with NBC and still went back to work for them in the 70's in the brief turn of the century series HEC RAMSEY. Wonder what the full story is there?
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
He was great in Hombre. No one wouldve performed the villain better.
Canceling a show that has shockingly low ratings makes perfect sense to me. From your report, it sounds as though it could’ve been handled in a better manner.
Ty for serving our country you as an actor were good and got the short end of the stick ...
Richard looked so much like our stepfather I was afraid of him for years.
Some of his best work was when he played HEC RAMSEY. That was some of the best acting I have ever seen.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
When writer Leonard Freeman was looking for a lead actor to star in his new series Hawaii Five-O, he turned to his good friend Richard Boone to play the part of McGarrett. Having already done a series for CBS (Kona Coast) Boone decided to turn it down.
Interesting, thanks for sharing this info! What other types of video would you like to see?
Man if he was highly critical of television programming way back then, it isn't hard to guess what he would say about it now. It's a hell of a lot worse than it used to be.
The raw deal was him having to find out like he did that's like being the last to know
Bloody Hell the booze aged a lot of actors , William Holden , Richard Boone and so many I could keep writing for 10 minutes .
He was good in everything; but my favorite was Have Gun Will Travel; and the Alamo...awesome underrated actor.
RB was a great actor, and great guy.
He said it best about the Hollywood crew, 'they were cynical, and couldn't care less'. Brilliant call.
Hence, I don't own a TV, or go to the movies to watch the detritus they now produce.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
From what I've read over the years, the vast majority of actors learned their show had been canceled from the trade papers.
