The majority of physical evidence of the earliest human inhabitants of North and South America is under the ocean, as the coastline of that era was over 200 feet lower than today. We'll never know how many archaeological sites are swamped below the sea, but it's safe to assume that the majority from that era are lost to the sea.

living in Southern California and exploring the history is amazing, I have seen hieroglyphs off the sunrise highway, sat under the oaks on Palomar mountain where the ancients used to dwell and found a huge foot in the Cleveland national forest....there is even a cave off Hwy 395 near Lawrence Welk Resort with the HANDS carved on the rock...

The semitic letter "kaph" is a picture of a cupped hand that formed our English letter "k"! The up and down line is a symbol of the side of Adam, while the folded cup part of the hand is the hand of God taking the rib from Adam to form Eve!

From a poet of the California coast:
    HANDS by Robinson Jeffers
Inside a cave in a narrow canyon near Tassajara The vault of rock is painted with hands,
A multitude of hands in the twilight, a cloud of men's palms, no
    more,
No other picture. There's no one to say
Whether the brown shy quiet people who are dead intended
Religion or magic, or made their tracings
In the idleness of art; but over the division of years these careful
Signs-manual are now like a sealed message
Saying: 'Look: we also were human; we had hands, not paws.
    All hail
You people with the cleverer hands, our supplanters
In the beautiful country; enjoy her a season, her beauty, and
    come down
And be supplanted; for you also are human.

....."a little too abstract, a little too wise. it is time to touch the earth, again." (Robinson Jeffers)..... my aunt lived a block up from Tor House...... i'm called "homeless", but i used to sleep for decades up in Dwight Way canyon, etc. in Berkeley. at NIGHT, i'd hike up the Derby Fire Trail into Tilden Park and out to Inspiration Point. winter hikes at night were great!

I was struck, looking at the "hands" that they were unusual, yet there was something familiar about them. It struck me yesterday what it was. Bear scratch marks, how grizzlies mark territory. Like someone making grizzley-oriented markings, not just handprints. There are grizzley-marked rocks on Grizzley Peak outside Felton, and I've seen similar marks on trees in Yellowstone. Could this have been the meeting place of a group who were a Grizzley Bear totem, or California grizzley cult?

That area should be a legally protected historical site. Unless I missed something. Strangers have desecrated and vandalized it already as seen in the video. The graffiti are not to supposed to be there. Esselen Native American people still have descendants today in 2020. Their ancestors were here over 10,000 years ago. This is their sacred place, and it should never be vandalized again.

BTW, horses and camels managed to cross over to Asia several times during their evolution and apparently did not need such land bridge. I am also rather sure that the Denisovan, Neanderthal, and modern humans that populated Australia about forty thousand years ago did not walk from Africa through Europe to Asia and then to Australia. I strongly suspect they had boats.

Generally do not like "white" people investigating ancient California Native Peoples. To much "cultural" baggage involved, like having drum and southwest flute music to accompany all the videos. California Native Peoples did not use skin head drums and only used flutes for the very personal use of courting. That said, modern Native Peoples cannot KNOW what is sacred or not because they have not lived in the environment that their ancestors lived. This is not a negative statement but only one of authentic perspective. If you live naked with the environment and obtain all of your sustinence from it, then yes please state what it is your truly think and belive and feel, but being an authentic person you would not because it would be to personal to you.

Audio is poor. Took away from the overall presentation. Suggest not using/relying on camera mics.

Very interesting subject matter. Speakers are knowledgeable and professional. Production values are extremely amateur. Please consult a professional cinematographer.

Why do you speak of my people like they are gone? We are alive and well and sorry to inform you but your way off on your interpretation of those symbols. May you find peace within.

Al, unfortunately many people confuse the title of the series to mean that Native Americans are not longer with us. Native American and Esselen people live and many prosper amongst us today and that is why Richard appears in this film. He explains his ancestry. My interpretation of one panel is very speculative and as you say is "way off". I appreciate your input and perhaps you can share with us your knowledge of the Cave Of The Hands.

Alex.....Wasn't my intention to insult cause I like watching your journeys, but being the rugged nature of your walks and journeys the narrations to include the many many" Oh My Goodness's" sort of cancels out the nature of your programs. I can only gather that your a good Christian, and I enjoy watching, but beef it up some, which is to say....leave out the Oh My Goodness. I have you on my favorite. jack
