Thanks man I don’t know that my dad loves this song and it’s f--kin awesome. It’s like my dad saw himself as Eddie and a mentor through Neil. Now I look upon my father as he did Neil. A great artistic man.
Neil is so fuckin gnarly I don’t think we appreciate how much he inspired and helped create all the music we grew up loving from Pearl Jam to nirvana to oasis and all that good music from the 90s
I was raised by my grandad, who is the biggest rock/metal head of all time. He's 76 now and still kicking it hard as hell. He brought me up on tonnes of Dylan, Young, Thin Lizzy, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Maiden, Priest etc. You name it, he was into it. I'd always known and loved the Neil Young version of this track as I'd heard my grandad blasting it hard since I was a baby. But, one random day when I was bumming around on The Pirate Bay in the mid 00's, I found this live show. My grandad was never really into grunge, but that was 100% my jam. Terrible pun intended. Listening to this song in particular just absolutely blew my mind. I remember picking up my guitar, playing along to this and headbanging like a motherf$%cker soooo many times in a row. I showed it to my grandad expecting him to be kinda "that's cool, but meh" about it. Instead, he was like "man, this is incredible, who's the dude on vocals?? You can play this song, right!? Go and get your guitar!" We turned this up to 11 and went absolutely ham together listening to a few different tunes back-to-back in the living room of his house. Incredible experience. All of my worlds collided into one in that moment and I'll never forget it.
This performance was the first time I heard pearl jam, the next day I went out and bought ten I’ve never had another album to this day where I loved and listened to every song one after the other seen them 3 times still love em.
I remember watching this live and knew back then that this was going to be a legendary performance. One of my top 10 of the best-ever rock performances.
What is amazing about this is: PJ wasn't sure Neil was going to show. PJ rehearsed "Old Man" not knowing what Neil wanted to play since Neil never showed for the rehearsal. Offstage, Neil told the roadie "just dime everything" on the Marshall stack he plugged in to. You can hear the vacuum tubes getting overloaded before he started.... When Neil started grinding the riff, Eddie panicked slightly, the bassist missed first note or two, but the drummer pounced. It was awsome! I'm deployed in Middle East right now and I miss this stuff....
Neil Young was "Grunge" decades before this style of music became popular in the 90s. His style paved the way for many of the Seattle bands at the time. Only more fitting to him on MTV at the time.
I remember watching this video back at early 90s. Every sunday, after church,me and my family used to go to my grandparents' house for lunch. This very sunday,my grandmom was cooking, and the Italian Championship match was late,so my grandpa went to his room,so i turned on MTV. I was an early adolescent, but i still remember,by now,how powerful watching it was.
I was 9 years old, I remember being stuck in front of tv and absolutely captivated. I had no idea live music could be this great outside of Guns N’ Roses. I’ve been a diehard fan since 😎😎😎
This performance brings back a certain memory for me. Me and a friend were at this girl's house we had all dropped acid we were rocking out to this while it was being broadcasted for the first time and her dad came home in the middle of it we had all the lights off with glow sticks in our hands dancing only the TV was on. Lol She turns the volume down and her dad just calmly says "Can I talk to you in the other room please" 😅😅😅
DNC 2024 brought me here Can't believe... I never heard this song before, but it feels as if I have always heard it before... but even if I heared it, I might be 10yrs old or less.. Great Song!!!🙏
One of the greatest live performances ever. Actual rock ' n roll and what an anthem now that the free world is being threatened by the next US government
Wow. The number of commenters here with the same story as me is crazy. A young teenager who had never heard of either, becoming a lifelong fan of both all in the exact same moment. Epic.
this is probably one of my top 3 favorite performances from the VMA's, the other two being the acoustic set with Jon Bon Jovi/Ritchie Sambora from 1989 and the 1986 performance of the Monkees doing Daydream Believer/I"m a Believer. Back when the VMA's were actually fun to watch
Looking at this awesomeness, I'm trying to remember the exact year I watched Neil in concert with Pearl Jam as his backing band (without the singer). 1994 or perhaps 95?
This, ladies and gentlemen, is rock n' roll in its purest, rawest form. It literally does not get any better than this. Keep on rockin' in the free world, everybody 🤟🎸
The story behind this performance is amazing...the didn't practice the day before or day of...they just showed up and killed it!
That's authenticity and heart my friend.
Yes indeed! Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Crosby Stiles, Nash, and Young, and of course Crosby, Stiles and Nash. Best music ever!
😂❤🎉
Thanks man I don’t know that my dad loves this song and it’s f--kin awesome. It’s like my dad saw himself as Eddie and a mentor through Neil. Now I look upon my father as he did Neil. A great artistic man.
It’s very easy to play, but yeah I know what you mean.
Neil is so fuckin gnarly I don’t think we appreciate how much he inspired and helped create all the music we grew up loving from Pearl Jam to nirvana to oasis and all that good music from the 90s
Fuck oasis
A VMA’s with a 10 minute jam session. Those were the days

Thanks for sharing this great story.
Great story! 👏👏
Eres un hombre afortunado.
Thin lizzy !!!!!
@@ayrtonvennkeane9315Yeah ! Thin Lizzy...but when he included Bon Jovi...it kinda threw me off...😂
The GODFATHER of grunge, showing them how it's done ! He is the legend !
And his disciples were showing where Grunge came from!
...of music

Listen this song but in pinkpok 1993 it crazy
So did I
If you like this performance consider getting the album Neil Young and Pearl Jam made together, “Mirror Ball”
Hopefully you went out and bought ragged glory and freedom and live rust and every other neil album.
I remember watching this live and knew back then that this was going to be a legendary performance. One of my top 10 of the best-ever rock performances.
I was 14 or 15 back then, and this just made my jaw drop to the floor.
I have this on VHS. That's how stoked I was to see this.
I was 10 years old at the time and never heard of Neil Young (yet). Even my young mind knew at the time I was watching something very special here.
Same. But I was 11 lol. 80’s babies 👊🏻
I was 31
I was 6...and yet STILL knew that I was watching something that MTV would more than likely never witness again...🤔
Neil's first solo here is one of the most raw things I've ever heard. What an absolute legend.
Its anger. Its not upset, sad, disappointment. Its anger. Saw him live in 2012 in Seattle, left stunned.
Some sheet ya just cant fix... 😮

@pcatful Absolutely..... at that point Uncle Neil took the boys on a little trip to big time Rock n Roll from the soul.
What is amazing about this is:
PJ wasn't sure Neil was going to show.

Thanks for sharing that, i didnt know....i loved this performance
Thank you for the back story and stay safe ❤️🙏🏾🤘🏾
That's some great observations, I'm going to re-watch/listen for it now, thank you.
One of the best live performances of all time. Still blasting this on 05-25-2024.
No over the top lights. No choreography. No autotune. No lip syncing. This is what music should be.
yes exactly the real show and music
Can you imagine hearing Neil Young auto tuned? 😂
No! @@sgtpepper1138
Music can be a lot of different things. Why can't you appreciate something without qualifying it against your grievances with other music?
@@mfmorag1nope. He is right. 100%. It’s art.

after so manny years... still one of the Greatest live performance given by human being
My senior year in High School watching this live was something special, still miss this music. Such a good time to be a young kid.
I saw this live when it happened. I was 15 years old. I knew that night how amazing it was. 45 now
I remember watching this live and it blew my mind! I’ve never seen Uncle Neil play any angrier or gnarly then at that moment. 🔥🔥

Fantastic…it’s raw, loud, authentic…just like rock n roll should be!!
Neil takes it to another level with that solo..no one can match him ever
I love the energy Neil Young brings to this performance. What a great song!
The most intense performance of anything I’ve ever seen.
Yeah remember watching this and coming away out of breath and out of voice...unforgettable.
christ , those solos , absolutely mind blowing
for whatever reason, the harmony on the lyric ‘hit’ at the 2:21 mark has stuck with me since I watched this live!
I was 14 when I saw this and was my introduction to Neil. Blew me away.
Some say the best live rock performance of all time
This song, "my my, hey hey" and "heart Of gold" I like so much; Neil Young have so talent.
Neil at 3:06...w/ one of the sickest guitar solos ever.
I remember this every time I hear Neil Young. Pearl Jam and Neil Young jamming on VH1. Best jam session.
I can’t believe how good the mix is on this!
This makes me cry of joy.. 🙏🏆👏
I saw Neil young weld tour in salt lake and Pearl Jam 2 nights in a row in Seattle both great shows
Still get chills from this, PJ w rock royalty!
I was 9 years old, I remember being stuck in front of tv and absolutely captivated. I had no idea live music could be this great outside of Guns N’ Roses. I’ve been a diehard fan since 😎😎😎
Profetetic Song. Neil is clearly having a great time. Thanks for this. Pearl Jam and Neil Young. Epic!
This clip is fantastic, neil leathering the guitar likes hes digging a hole in the ground, fantastic rock n roll noise, incredible

It's amazing how a lot of people criticized their use of this song without realizing it's message.
Same!!!!!
I remember watching this live with my old man who loved Neil Young.
I see what you did there. Well played my friend.
A legend. Knows how to entertain an audience with great motivation and spirit.
Writes great music .
A true icon , legend and hall of fame
The 90's was everything!!!! MTV fuckin sucks now especially the music Awards! No fuckin awesome moments like these anymore. 😢
Excellent version of this song
Neil Young man - it's his song.
One of the greatest live performances ever. Actual rock ' n roll and what an anthem now that the free world is being threatened by the next US government
Epic Young message. Historical message.
Grande Neil per pearl jam e un onore suonare questa canzone fantastica ☮️🍀💖
When compared to his regular concert Neil Young is being the big rockstar that he is , what he usually doesn't do. BUT man is this AWESOME!!!!!!!
THIS SONG WAS MEANT🎉 TO BE! 🙏 GOD BLESS YOU NEIL YOUNG AND FAMILY! OH YEAH AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS❤
Oh yeah and all thumbs up!!
There's lots of great music today but fuck do I miss drums and guitar rock n roll.
They're just having so much fun!! :)

Thank you for giving me two ref. I will check them out and put them under the black light, to see if they make the cut, Kade.
@@kadehebert201 My pleasure. when it comes to the VMA's, I can remember when it wasn't just pop and r&b artists that dominated the line up
When Eddie says "You know this guy" as Neil walks out, that's a reference to the Last Waltz I think. Robbie Robertson says it when Neil come out
Still as visceral as the first time I saw it live on TV. Neil is a beast.
i'm watched this show ouhh mind blow and vedder style so cool ,,,
DA steering the ship perfectly. Beast!
Looking at this awesomeness, I'm trying to remember the exact year I watched Neil in concert with Pearl Jam as his backing band (without the singer). 1994 or perhaps 95?
It would have been in support of the Mirrorball album, so 95 or later.
@@calebfuller4713 Yeah, 95 at the latest, since I moved back to my hometown from Stockholm (where I watched the gig) in -96.
Neil young killed that solo! 🤘
Lembro ate hoje dessa apresentação no dia. Tava vendo na TV e fiquei paralisado. Foda!!!
Great song
Here we are...again
I remember watching this live! Such an awesome job!
mind-blowing!
The Kung Of Grunge meets the King of Seattle Grunge. Oh! And forever homage to Kurt. ❤️

Ha!!!! It brought me back here too!!! Hell yeah!!! Fuck DJT!!!!!!! FOREVER!
I love Stone's duck walk while playing.😁
Look at DA going full on psycho on those drums! The dude is a beast!
The best Pearl Jam ever sounded...!
So much anger, such a high pitch
You know THIS guy !
0:17… HELLO LADIES AND GENTLEMAN HERE IS YOUR MONSTER GUITAR SOUND!!!

I think Vedder is like in a stunned state to be beside such a pure rock paragon.
Neil young playing the guitar like it owes him money.
Nah, that's his woman, man. ..They get along together.
Walz kicks MAJOR ASS and so does Neil!!
