Like you, after high school, I moved to New England states. I left the Philippines during the Marcos regime.
I never lost my identity as a Filipino ever. I still love my country in spite of the killings, insurrection, political corruption as well as poverty.
I always think of the poor that I left who has no opportunities but I never turned my back against my people.
To give back, I sponsor a few charities in poor places in the Philippines. Every year (without skip) I give without naming myself and asking for a return.
I don't have a story to tell like you but I AM A FILIPINO WITHOUT HESITATION. I NEVER LOST MY IDENTITY.

The one thing I would love to hear the most is the story about how are we connected to Israel, from the time of King Solomon to being part of the lost tribe - that only God knows who and from what specific tribe and lineage.

The problem with first generation immigrant Filipinos is that they stop talking to their children in Tagalog at home once they're in the US. Why Tagalog? Because Tagalog connects one to ALL Filipinos. The effect of not speaking to one's children in Tagalog his is multiple. To mention just two, one is depriving the kids of the advantages of being bilingual, which in turn predisposes them to learn another language more easily. In the US, English can be learned in school, through their peers, and of course mass and entertainment media. For another, the ability to speak Tagalog in the US allows you to connect with your roots. You're able to follow the news in the mother country or even the telenovelas. I haven't even mentioned being able to connect with cousins in the mother country more spontaneously. Filipinos must realize that in the US, or any other country, they're looked at as different no matter how good they are at English. They're always asked where they come from, even if they were born in the US. Filipino-Americans of the second and later generation, just like the author of the video above, tend to be confused because of their lack of ability to connect to their roots (exacerbated by their parents lack of knowledge of Philippine history and colonial mentality). If this second and later generation Filipino-Americans can speak Tagalog they can much more easily rid themselves of this confusion.
