If you’re new to the hobby, you’re probably looking for something super simple and easy to use. If you’re an RC pro, you probably want a charger that is programmable and can maintain your packs. sure would be nice to get the adapter included..had a big weekend planned only to find out i could not charge the batteries
I have to say @spektrumrc did an awesome job making this system very beginner user friendly! I recently got into electric rc and although I know how to charge LiPo Batteries with a normal charger, this charger, and the checker, have made it so simple to use. Not to mention that the whole “Smart Spektrum” series of ESC’s, Batteries, motors, and servos have been excellent! I’ve had no issues using this system.

Fantastic video Greg! I've been running this setup (S2100 and Specktrum batteries) exclusively for around 6 months now...and I absolutely love them!! Glad you made a video, because thorough info is actually kinda tough to find on these (or it was for a while at least). The self storage discharge feature of the batteries themselves is alone, worth the price of entry in my opinion.

Can you get an adapter for a small 7.4v 350mah 2s batteries like in the scx24? And will it charge at a low enough setting for them batteries?
Do they make any shorty 2s race packs?
What about nicads you know they still use that in some rtr if you can believe that?

We have a Twin Hammers Rock Rider buggy which we purchased in 2012 but hasn't been used for six years. It fits a short (10cm) 7.4v lipo battery. Either one, or both our existing Reaction battery and Dynamite balancing charger are not working and we want to get the buggy working for our son. So I am looking at the Spektrum 2100charger as well as 2 x 2S 5000mAh 7.4V 50C Spektrum Smart LiPo stubby batteries to buy. However, I'm nervous about storing the batteries when not in use.....do I need to discharge them via the Smart Charger after EVERY time we use the buggy (as my son might only play with it once a week or less). Our buggy has the EC3 blue connector too. Your advice would be much appreciated

Thanks for a nice review Greg. I have one question. I'm new to this RC game. Just bought a Kraton 6s packed with Spektrum all the way. I'm locked on a S2100 charger - however, I understand that the S2100 is fitted with IC3 connections, and my Spektrum ESC runs IC5. Hence I'm getting IC5 on my batteries - so will they fit easily on to the IC3 connections in the charger? Br Jacob

Great video! Just a word of warning though. These smart battery's come from the factory with the discharge (storage) feature turned off. You have to go into the charger menu for each specific battery & set the automatic storage time period. I have set my battery's to discharge down to a storage voltage after 48 hours. Just in case I don't get a chance to run my vehicles right away.

They must have changed that at some point. I have 14 of the Smart batteries, 5 of which are the Gen 1 versions that are in this video, and every single one of them has been pre-programmed out of the box to auto-discharge to storage voltage at 72 hours.
@@JunkfoodZombieGuns Yeah I picked up my batteries when the Smart system first released over two years ago. Thinking about upgrading to the G2 batteries for my small rigs but I run QS8 connectors for my 1/5 scale & speedrun cars now. Spektrum esc's don't stay in my rigs for long even tho I like the features...
@@Daywalker_Lee The G2s are nice if for nothing else other than not having to deal with the extra wires of the balance lead, but at the disadvantage of not being able to charge the G2 batteries on anything but a Smart charger.
Here is what I dont quite get. I know this platform from Spektrum you get the ideal charging from the smart charger/batteries. Aside from making charging simple, this is supposed to help keep them running in peak performance right? The best performance over the life of the battery, but does this also equate to longer run times with the smart battery compared to a "dumb" battery of the same rating, and mha, and all that? Secondly, if I buy an Arrma car and the new v5 models have all spectrum electronics servo/ESC/Motor/radio, what benefits would I get from using the smart batteries over any other regular battery?

I was about to buy a couple of lipo batts to get back into the hobby after 5 yrs, but found about this smart thing, now I'm a bit confused. I have a charger already that has to be programmed. These smart batteries can be charged with it? Are there any compatibility issues? Like an ESC not working with them or something.
Very interesting. Seriously considering this setup. Prices are currently about the same as everything else on the market.
Only concern is the different adapters to run in my assorted rigs.
Plug types tend to be an issue with a lot of stuff out there. This is a great system if you have Horizon plugs in your stuff and it's good because you can adapt other plugs to it if necessary. Enjoy whatever you choose.

I like the charger. I even charge all my xt90. Never ever charge without balancing plug. Why else would have they made it. Problems with batteries start with wrong charging, harm them or over use them. Over use not by only using them to often. Not every batterie can handle every esc. It needs to be compatible

Great video!! Question: What is the difference between 2200 mah 30c pack and a 2200 mah 60c battery pack? How long does 30c last over the 60c??? I’m super new to this battery system or any battery for that matter. I’m switching from gas powered RC planes. I received my very first smart battery powered plane last week and it came with smart battery. I need all the information i can get. Thank you.
For those who read this thread and dont know. "C" is the discharge capacity. "30C" means the max delivery is 30 time the battery capacity. The capacity is the quantity of energy stocked in the battery (5000Mah for example). For a 5000mah battery you will have 30C x 5000mah = 150 000mah = 150A (Amperes). Its the intensity.
Then, compare this value to the consumption of your motor. If your battery has enough capacity to deliver such power its good.. If not, take a bigger capacity (Mah) or bigger "C" or you will destroy your lipo.
In general its better to reduce intensity by increasing tension (volts). Reason why bigger cars use 6S or 8S batteries with low kv motors, but that s another topic.
Higher C = higher price.
Note that you have 2 values : continuous and peak. If the first is quite reliable, the second one is often surestimated by the maker.
Something I noticed...it set the battery to charge at 7.5 amps but the battery is a 5000mAh...I always thought that the safe charge rate is 1c...so 5 amps...

Having no luck with this system. I bought the charger and as soon as you plug the battery in the charger goes straight into charging. Never got a chance to press start. Bought 2 spectrum s2 5000 batteries and 1 already has an overheat code after 2 charges. 1 battery charges at around 80 degrees the other was up to 107 degrees. Not sure if it's something I do wrong or what's going on.

I wonder why Spektrum doesent make higher than 5000 mah smart batts? Lots of people wanna run 6000 and up esp in a performance upgrade. Had i know this charger could do different batteries I might not have bought the UP 240 charger. But i guess this Spektrum only recognizes its own lineup right away anyways. Thanks.

I am new to RC. I bought this Spektrum charger. I am still a bit confused. I have the charging part of if down, but unsure about discharge and storing. So if i charge my smart battery and run it in my truck until depleted when am i suppose to be discharging the batteries? I mean say i only run my truck a few times a week, can i just run the battery down and in a few days charge again and run battery down and a few days charge again or should i be discharging the battery if i dont use in a few days? Will the batteries discharge on their own if i do nothing with them? And lastly, if i dont plan on using battery for a few weeks or months is this when i put on charger and select storage mode to store the batteries?
A LiPo battery will 'discharge' as you use it. I always 'storage' charge my LiPos after every use to keep them safe(as I generally dont use them every day). A Full charge is 4.2v per cell, storage is 3.8v per cell. And you never really want to run them lower than 3.4v per cell. If your using them often, say every day, then you can just run them down and then full charge again but after say two days you'll want to storage charge if not. Hope this helps

I just bought a boat and it has ec5 connectors and the batteries I bought are the 3s/3cell 11.1v 5200mah 50c lipo with ec5 plug is there a smart battery that is equivalent or that will work and a charger to go along with it? Yes, Spektrum has 5000mah 3S packs with the IC5 plug. It is compatible with your EC3 plugs. The Spektrum charger is capable of charging your existing packs and the Smart packs.

@@DronemanJoeRc the "c" rating is continous discharge power of the pack so essentially how much current it can send to the speed controller. The higher the c the higher the continuous amps. For your Sonic, the up to 6s means it has the capability to run a 6s system...be it two 3 cells or one 6 cell with the other battery connector isolated.

You could make one
