I started my hot dog cart business just over 2 years ago during Covid and now I wish I'd gotten into a cart 30 years ago.. I'm in the process of building out my food trailer to expand and make even more money, but the cart has made enough for me to pay my bills and expand the business. I highly recommend others to look into it and get into street food either way!

I started 5 hears ago... the business plan has changed at least once a year. Lol... I currently run the largest hot dog cart business in my city. Several employees invluding vendors and managers. In my experience, city regulations are the BIGGEST hindering factor in the growth of my business. Its really a pain.

Jimmy John could not get a Hot Dog Cart Business started with the $$$ his father loaned him to start a business. He quickly found out it is less expensive to have a meat a slicer and a fridge. Get lucky enough to find a store front to rent in a heavy traffic area at affordable cost.

You also have to figure out if your city allows carts as opposed to food trucks/ trailers. This is how it was for me, the direct opposite of what this video talks about. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but some cities will not allow food carts while still allowing food trucks/ trailers. I had my business license denied by St George, UT (yeah, I’m calling you out) because food carts, specifically, are not allowed by city ordnance. That city lost my business due to government regulations and I went to a different city where I kill it now.

In Montreal, you need to purchase a city approved stainless steel cart which starts at approximately 12 - 14 thousand dollars in order to get your permits/licenses !
    GOOD LUCK !

I think I remember in one of your videos you said that you were out of Tennessee and that you used recipal to create your nutrition labels.
The commercial kitchen I just started working out of has asked me how I'm going to get nutrition labels, and I said recipal, and they said to me that the state might not like that.
I don't know of any other way to create a nutrition label because I learned about recipal from watching your channel, and that's how I've been doing it up until the time I started going into the commercial kitchen.
I have written to the state asking these types of questions and they never respond.
Matter of fact you're the only person that ever responds to any of my questions LOL which I appreciate.
I'm thinking online programs are the only way since they're not required spices to be lab tested.
Do you know of any other way?
Is there any other program that you use?
    Or recommend?
    That is State approved?
    Thank you.🥰

    • @MarketingFoodOnline
      @MarketingFoodOnline  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Recipal uses 2 types that are acceptable by the FDA directly they can be lab tested or DATA driven labels they are in compliance with the FDA so not sure where the state or why the state would not allow them DID the state specifically tell you this or did the "commercial " kitchen just say something without any real valid reason ? as long as you enter your recipe correctly or the product recipal data driven labels are legal and legit.

@@MarketingFoodOnline I think the problem with this kitchen is they've never had anybody do spice blends out of their commercial kitchen before, and it's kind of a new territory for them. They're dealing mostly with folks who are making pickles and low acid foods and things that have to be sent to a lab for testing. So I googled FDA approved label making services and recipal is on the list
so I let them know that recipal was on the list along with a few other services.
People keep telling me I can do spice blends as a cottage food and I know that I can
      but if I do that
I cannot sell to restaurant kitchens etc and that is part of what I want to do, so I have to do this out of the commercial kitchen. It has been really hard to find information and answers. But you have been very helpful and I appreciate you very much.

I got the food manufacturers inspection a few days ago and passed, I think I just have to pay an annual permit fee now and get an inspection every 2 years, so finally I got it, nothing was ever mentioned about having to get my spice blends tested, the inspector said spices were the lowest of the low regarding risk

I could not get anything started in Schenectady it was impossible. They wanted so much money it was just a dead end Money Pit and I'm just trying to sell a couple of dogs and maybe a couple of steak sandwiches you know what I'm saying? Right now I'm in Maine with a trailer that's all set up and out of all these places I've lived this seems to be the most promising to get through the whole process.

Having to rent a kitchen is an instant deal breaker. It will cost you so much you will be PAYING people to eat your food unless you’re selling massive quantities of cheap commodity junk. This is the problem with the food business. It incentivizes selling cheap junk foods to the mass market consumers. Makes it very difficult and expensive to innovate and grow a niche higher priced product.

Not necessarily. Part of being a business owner is being resourceful. Yes a commissary kitchen could cost you thousands of dollars a month but that doesn’t mean you HAVE to rent at places like those. You can go to restaurants that may have space available for rent during off hours for you to use at a reduced cost or you could see if commissaries have hourly space rentals. We started out that way ourselves. Worked that way for years and now we have purchased an existing restaurant that we can run our other business out of as well. Just takes more effort that’s for sure but it’s part of the process if you don’t have thousands of dollars of capital to start off with. 👍🏽
