Thank you so much! We used the M8 bolt head, and it worked. Probably saved us $100.00 if we had called a repairman. One tip: We had to drill through the plastic on our model to get the bolt through.
This was INCREDIBLE! Saved me so much money and time! Like other comments mention, I did have to drill a hole through the remaining bit of the old plastic attachment, but thay was the only even slightly challenging part of this process. THANK YOU!!!!
Nice hack, the M8 bolt head being the key to the fix. A tweak is to use a nylon lock nut. It will hold more reliably better under thermal cycling and corrosion than two jammed-nuts, and might cost less.
Mine broke yesterday...couldn't find a vid like this....bought the typical whole assembly for both sides...Amazon, $20. But I would have preferred to be thrifty and do what you did. Stupid YT algorithm let me down. lol. 2 HOUR LATER UPDATE: Cancelled my Amazon order and came up with a similar fix using a much thinner bolt that essentially replaced the second/broken tab/prong that held the roller-wheel in place. Nice firm fix... Many Thanks!
I spent a week messing around, trying to fix it and "Harry-rig it" (named for my Dad, who was famous for repairing old stuff with paper clips and rubber bands). I think I basically wrecked it, now. YT also failed me in my search until today.
Thank you so much! I just fixed my dishwasher! Great advice! It took a couple of attempts to find the right drill size to get through the plastic easily. After that, it was simple. Thank you so much really save me a lot of hassle.
Just fixed mine. Thanks for the info. For anyone asking, I used a 5/16 drill bit and a center punch to make a hole in the existing plastic where the broken tabs where left. I was going to try to run a 8x1.25 tap through the plastic to help secure it but there isn't much on the sides after you drill the hole to cut with a tap so I just used the double nut method above.
This is great - thanks for posting. I couldn’t find M8 bolts in stainless at Home Depot but a 5/16 1 1/2” stainless bolt works perfectly. I found clipping the remaining plastic post with a wire cutters was easy and allowed for easy drilling of the hole. I also added a stainless washer on the inside of the rack side to distribute a little of the stress on that thin plastic.
Awesome video! So glad I found this. Off to Home Depot I go… but first to UPS to return the overpriced “assembly kit”, which btw didn’t come with instructions. Thank You again!
The M8 bolt head slid right through the hole of the wheel so I had to flip it around and shave the inside of the wheel to accept the nut so it wouldnt protrude too far for the track to work. Even though I didn't do it your way, you gave me the info I needed to at least try and make an alternative fix. Thank you.
awesome, I have been waiting to fix this for over two years and I figured let me see if someone has posted a fix before I attempted to jimmy rig it myself
Thank you! It worked...I used a bolt that needed an Allen wrench, but I'm hoping that holds up. Has the vibration from your dishwasher running loosened the nuts at all?
I opted for the rounded top bolt and nut. The washer was not required. To solve the issue with the nut potentially coming off, I used Thread Seal Tape, wrapped around a few times and the bolt could be hand screwed but there was resistance so it will not come off. Lowes item number 396451 or 396450, bolts were in the same tray so not sure just different length, carriage bolt. Hand tighten but make sure the wheel still can turn, done.
This saved me $45. Could also go with 25mm and a locking nut. Also, rather than drilling out the busted clip you can just put it through the slot behind that.
@@courtneybelisle3274 Yes I did -- Of course my largest drill bit was 1/4" and the M8x30 is slightly larger than that! I started with a small drill bit and then worked my way up -- I didn't want to split or break the plastic holder piece. Finally I used the 1/4" drill bit to widen the whole as required. All in all, it went pretty smoothly. I went to lowes and there were no M8x30 only m8 x 33 (or 35?) so I got the closest english equivalent (which I forgot to write down the size) -- just bring a wheel with you to size the bolt head. I got 4 bolts and 8 nuts, but I only had to do 1 wheel this time. There is another one that is starting to break -- but still working OK. I am ready to fix the others as need arises. Good luck! This video gives you a tip on removing the front clips: th-cam.com/video/aESlb13gQZU/w-d-xo.html
Did you completely drill out the center part where the plastic parts had broken off? Seems like you would since the rollers can still lock in place on the back side.
Thanks for this simple and practical fix. It worked for me; I used 2 small zip ties, horizontally placed in line with the metal slider. Rack is stable and slides fine. Hope it lasts until replacement parts are in ... who knows how long that will take?
Excellent suggestion, especially since only the metric sized bolts work, not the English equivalents. At my Home Depot, no metric hex bolts are to be found. In the end the zip tie solution worked fine as a good temporary solution.
Fixed it in 5 minutes, it took longer to drive to get the bolts than to do the work. One correction in your video; it’s not a design flaw. It’s BY DESIGN that it’s trash, and that we have to replace it, so they have residual income. It’s BY DESIGN that you can’t drill a hole in the plastic without breaking it. It’s BY DESIGN that the plastic parts are extremely weak. I’ll never buy a Whirlpool appliance again.

Perfect! I was getting read to buy an entire upper kit. This is much cheaper and easier fix.
Worked like a champ! Had to drill a couple of holes for the M8 30mm bolts but you were spot on!

Thanks for taking the time to post this. I'm really happy I don't need to buy a new parts set that will eventually break again👍

Thanks, your instructions worked like a charm . I used a self locking nut after drilling out the hole for the bolt .Great idea you had . Thanks again
Spot on!!!! $5.50 in stainless steel bolts and nuts vs unknown appliance repair service call and parts. Took 20 minutes to complete the repair.

No way an actual M8 bolt head would slip though unless the wheel was damaged in some other way.
Thanks for the video! This solution worked like a charm on my whirlpool dish washer!
Thanks for posting this! Easy repair with extra hardware I had lying around.
Thank you. This fixed the problem without having to buy the $60 replacement.
Now I know why the rack kept separating from the rails, thanks for the fix!
Genius. I've been using zip ties for years but they eventually break.

How do you get the end brackets off, and did you have to drill it out? Thanks.
The end brackets you push on the "ribbed" section and the ends then pop off.
Did you have to do any drilling to get the bold to fit thru.
Yes. I should have mentioned that. Fortunately the plastic is soft and easy to drill.
I guess you drilled out the plactic parts that were in the dishwasher rack. I would have to do that first here.
Did you end up drilling out the plastic? Was thinking of trying this today.

Thanks for this mine broke this morning
I was looking into this after the second one went on a different dishwasher. Bloody parts each were 50$
I used a white 5-cent zip-tie to repair mine. The rollers don't need to turn.
Thanks for the tip, did same, no holes to drill and no bolt to track down.

Nice , looks like a get my addaboy... points today because of you cheers :) thanks so much ..
Won’t the bolt rust?
Not if it’s stainless. Mine has been in for a long time and there’s not a speck on it.
No the trick is to use stainless steel nut and bolt. Stainless steel in non ferrous metal and will not rust.
I think it would have been helpful to include the drilling part in this “how to” video.
Holy smokes. Thank you a ton
