Draining Another Swamp

  • This is a job I looked at last year but wasn't quite this bad. These homes are right behind a commercial piece of property that was used as a dump site for road jobs in town. The contractor brought the grade up so much and is now forcing the water onto the neighbors property. The worst part the homeowners are not getting much help from the city, all they have done is install an 18" pipe for the water to drain into a ditch that runs along the property. But nothing was grading to run to the pipe, so I am coming in to cut a ditch to the pipe and hopefully get the water to drain off and things to dry up. With how slow its draining it's saturating the area around the houses and causing more damage. I only had time to get the first yard draining and are planning to come back next week to do the others. Then I will give it some time to dry then come back and regrade and seed the yards. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #drainingaswamp

Lay standerd black fabric under and up sides and enough to flap over top. 6 inch stonevunder perf pipe then stone to top. Or if dont want spend money on top stone. A properly designed herring bone French drain but I would be using fabric covered pipe and grade the back fill from top to bottom start of with a small pea gravel and finish at the top with 3 inch stone then cover the top of the trench with fabric membrane then a layer of coarse sand then cover with soil will drain any amount of water if properly executed

    I’m not sure of the budget for the homeowner, but a bunch of fill along the shed and tree side and create a distinct ditch that is sloped on the sides such that it can still be mowed. Make sure it has about a 3 or 4 ft wide bottom so it doesn’t erode too much when there are heavy rains. The higher level of the dirt will keep the tree and shed on ground that’s a bit less soggy and also there is no place for the water to pond up. The yard can be better used and maintained as a result. The fill would have to go back into the gate and along that side of the fence and then the water only enters the yard at the back for about a 3 or 4 ft swath, even when it is deep, it could only be 5 ft across and constantly flowing instead of seeping??? So long as it doesn’t have a place to pond up, it will dry out really well.
    That is how we would dry out fields and pastures in the foothills so they could be better used, create ditches that control the flow of the water so there is no ponding happening. Could free up as much as 5 - 15 acres with 300 - 500 feet of ditch being built up. It was expensive but the land you gain was worth so much more! The frogs and snakes etc were none too happy mind you.
    This idea may be too expensive for the homeowner though.
    It really is kinda shitty of the city to only do a half assed job. There needs to be a proper ditch along the back of those properties so the water just bypasses them except for flowing out the new culvert and already existing pipe in the homeowner’s yard. I bet there was an actual ditch in that yard at one time but over the years with erosion and a bit of land settling, that marsh area developed. That’s too bad for the homeowners there.

    • @eliteearthworksllc
      @eliteearthworksllc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GT500 that’s a good idea too. Yes I was planning to cut a ditch in the easement with hopes of the water never getting to the houses. I really should have started up at the neighbors but the last two houses wanted to be home to get a better idea of what I was going to do. I think they’re a little hesitant with people after fighting with the city which I understand and didn’t want to start digging and make them mad when they got home. I’m planning on going back next week to work on that. Appreciate the comment too!

    • @shitloveaduck
      @shitloveaduck 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elite Earthworks LLC - it was a shot in the dark. It worked on a much larger scale on the ranch. It saved us from having to bring in dozens upon dozens of loads of fill which would have been cost prohibitive. The ranch was quite far out in the country.
      It worked so well in southern Manitoba, Canada that it almost killed Lake Winnipeg. They cut all kinds of ditches and the water went into the lake directly instead of being filtered as it crossed the land and grass marshes. It destroyed one of the largest grass marshes in the world in a few short decades. It took millennia to create the grass marsh!
      In our case, at the ranch, we always worked with Fish and Wildlife. They would verify we were diverting the water responsibly and not taking away vital habitat. Great bunch of Officers there. Whatever you do, I am sure it will work. Different soils, different regions. You will know best. I look forward to watching!
